Buckeyes claim first team and individual tournament win since 2004 after third round of event rained out
COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State men’s golf team claimed its first tournament victory since 2004 by winning the Memphis Intercollegiate after the third round was rained out Tuesday in Memphis, Tenn. Senior Vaughn Snyder became the first Buckeye medalist since 2004 as well, winning the event with a total of 6-under 138.
The Buckeyes topped the Memphis Intercollegiate leaderboard after 36 holes Monday with rounds of 299 and 289 on the par 72, 7,259-yard Colonial Country Club. Ohio State’s total of 12-over 588 led the 16-team field by three strokes. Tournament host Memphis placed second at 591, followed by Mississippi State at 594.
“I am so happy for the team,” Jim Brown, Ohio State head coach, said. “They played well and competed hard. Vaughn’s play was excellent throughout the event. It’s a big boost of confidence for the guys. I am really excited for the win and looking forward to our next event.”
The tournament victory is the 158th for Brown in his 36th season at the helm of the Buckeyes. It is the first time he has won the Memphis Intercollegiate.
Snyder had two sub-par rounds during play Monday with scores of 68 and 70. The Massillon, Ohio, native totaled seven birdies and two eagles on the day. Snyder’s opening round was bogey-free and tied his lowest-career round as a Buckeye. He was an impressive 8-under par on par 5’s. Snyder won by six strokes with three players tied for second at even par.
For the second-consecutive tournament, sophomore Bo Hoag finished in the Top 10. Hoag, who placed fourth at the Tucker Invitational, tied for eighth with a total of 2-over 146. The native of Upper Arlington, Ohio, was steady Monday as he carded 24 pars to go along with five birdies in rounds of 74 and 72.
Co-captain Brad Wright tied for 11th at 147 for his second Top 15 finish of the season. The redshirt-junior from Cambridge, Ohio, battled back after a first round 77 to shoot a 2-under 70 Monday afternoon. Wright’s second round included an eagle and two birdies.
Tanner Murphy shot 80-77 for a total of 157 to tie for 63rd. It is the first team competition for the sophomore from Upper Arlington after playing twice as an individual last season.
Rounding out the Buckeyes was senior Dan Rush, who tied for 77th after rounds of 80 and 81.
The last time Ohio State clinched both team and individual titles was at the 2004 Big Ten Championship with Kevin Hall as the medalist.
The second-round score of 289 by the Buckeyes was their lowest round since day two of the Marshall Invitational, posted last season on April 5.
Up next, the Buckeyes return to action Oct. 24-26 when they compete in the Bank of Tennessee at the Ridges in Johnson City, Tenn.
