Women’s Volleyball: Ohio State Falls, 3-0, at No. 20 Wisconsin – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (10-6 overall, 1-3 Big Ten) lost, 3-0 (28-26, 25-16, 25-17), at No. 20 Wisconsin (12-4, 2-2) Sunday afternoon in the Wisconsin Field House. Buckeye Anna Szerszen posted a team-high 11.5 points in the match with 11 kills and an assist block. Wisconsin’s Morgan Salow collected a match-high 13.5 points with 13 kills and an assist block for the Badgers.
Wisconsin opened set one with two ace serves by Nikki Klingsporn for a 2-0 lead. Ohio State responded with six consecutive points starting with a Szerszen kill. A Kelli Barhorst-Szerszen block and a Susan Halverson ace serve gave the Buckeyes a 3-2 lead. Kills by Kaila Calhoun and Barhorst and a Badger error made it 6-2. Trailing, 8-6, a Brittney Dolgner kill and an OSU error tied the set at eight. At 14-all, a Szerszen kill and a Betsy Hone-Kristen Dozier block gave Ohio State a 15-14 lead. A Buckeye error and a Dolgner-Elle Ohlander block tied the set at 16. Tied at 23, a Buckeye error made it set point at 24-23. The Buckeyes, with a Szerszen kill tied the set at 24. Ohio State made it 25-24 with a Szerszen kill to serve set point. An OSU error tied the set at 25. OSU earned a second set point at 26-25 with a Dozier kill. Wisconsin tied the set at 26 with a Salow kill. The Badgers, with a Salow kill, earned their second set point at 27-26. Wisconsin won the set, 28-26, with a Janelle Gabrielsen kill to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State out hit Wisconsin, .278 to .250, in the set.
With Wisconsin leading, 1-0, in set two, the Buckeyes responded with kills from Szerszen and Barhorst and with two Badger errors held a 4-1 lead. The Badgers, trailing, 6-4, used a Gabrielsen ace serve and an OSU error to tie the set at six. OSU kills from Dozier and Katie Dull and a Badger error gave Ohio State a 9-6 lead. A Salow kill, an Allison Wack block and an OSU error tied the set at nine. Tied at 11, Wisconsin scored the next seven points to take an 18-11 lead. The run began included a Wack-Audra Jeffers block, four Salow kills, and two OSU errors for an 18-11 Badger lead. Wisconsin held the lead and at 23-16, two Ohlander kills ended the set at 25-16 to give Wisconsin a 2-0 lead in the match. The Badgers hit .407 for the set to .107 for the Buckeyes.
Tied at two in set three, a Jeffers kill, a Wack ace serve and an OSU error gave Wisconsin a 3-0 lead. The Badgers but the lead to 12 at 20-8. The Badgers reached match point at 24-14 off an OSU error. Buckeye kills from Dull and Barhorst, an Wisconsin error and a Chelsea Noble kill stopped four match points to cut the lead to seven at 24-17. After a Wisconsin time out, A Salow kill ended the set at 25-17, Badgers, for a 3-0 Wisconsin win. The Badgers hit .417 for the set to .071 for Ohio State.
In the match, Wisconsin hit .345 to Ohio State’s .163. The Badgers had a 42-33 advantage in kills and a seven-to-five margin in ace serves. Wack recorded a match-high three aces in the match. The Badgers gave up seven service errors to five for Ohio State. Defensively, Wisconsin had a 50 to 29 advantage in digs with Ohio State’s Halverson and Noble sharing match-high honors with eight each. The Buckeyes edged the Badgers in team blocks with a seven to six margin. Badger produced a match-high four blocks (1-3) for Wisconsin. At setter, Hone collected a match-high 23 assists for Ohio State while Klingsport collected 16 and Gabrielsen, 15 for the Badgers.
Ohio State returns home next week to host No. 19 Illinois (11-4, 2-2) at 7 p.m. Friday and No. 18 Purdue (13-3, 2-2) at 2 p.m. Sunday in St. John Arena.
