20th Ranked Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Youngstown State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 13th-ranked Ohio State (5-1) women’s volleyball team, behind a match/career-high 19 points from Katie Dull (Fr., Solon, Ohio) defeated Youngstown State (5-3), 3-0 (30-19, 30-21, 30-25) in OSU’s home opener in St. John Arena. Dull posted a career-high 14 kills (.423), three ace serves, four assist blocks and a career/match-high 14 digs in the victory. OSU’s Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) added 14.5 points with 11 kills (.407), an ace serve, a solo block and three assists. Youngstown State’s Ebony Barbosa and Jessica Fraley contributed 10.5 points each in the contest. Barbosa had nine kills, an ace serve and an assist block while Fraley had 10 kills and an assist block.
With game one tied at one, a Kaila Calhoun (Fr., Elkhart, Ind.) kill and a Penguin error gave Ohio State a 3-1 lead. Youngstown State cut the lead to one at 7-6 and 8-7 before a seven-one Buckeye run took the lead to 15-8. A Dull kill and a Susan Halverson (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn.) ace serve made it 10-7. After a Kaitlin O’Hara kill cut the margin to 10-8, kills from Calhoun and Meyer, a Dull ace serve and two Penguin errors completed the run. The Buckeyes held the lead and at 27-19 scored the final three points with two Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) kills and a Penguin error for a 30-19 score. Ohio State hit .429 for the game to .143 for Youngstown State.
Tied at three in game two, two Youngstown State errors and a Meyer-Betsy Hone (Fr., Celina, Ohio) block gave Ohio State a 6-3 lead. At 11-8, Ohio State, a Barbosa kill and an OSU error cut the margin to one at 11-10. A Dull kill, a Penguin error and a Meyer-Ashley Hughes (So., Carroll, Ohio) block put Ohio State ahead, 14-10. Leading, 22-18, the Buckeyes used a Dull kill and a Youngstown State error to take a 24-18 lead. At 25-20, a Kristen Dozier (So., Sandy Spring, Md.) kill, a Dozier-Dull block and a Penguin error made it 28-20. A Barbosa kill cut the margin to 28-21. A McCarthy kill set game point at 29-21 and Dull closed out the game with a kill for a 30-21 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .382 for the game to .000 for Youngstown State.
Game three saw five lead changes and six ties. Youngstown State held several early leads but at 6-5, a Meyer kill tied the game at six. A Hone-Dozier block, a solo block by McCarthy and a YSU error gave the Buckeyes a 9-6 lead. Leading, 14-11, OSU kills from Calhoun and Meyer and three Youngstown State errors put Ohio State ahead, 19-11. Trailing 22-13, the Penguins used a Barbosa kill and two OSU errors to cut the lead to 22-17. After a Dull kill (23-17), three Buckeye errors cut the lead to three at 23-20. OSU expanded a 24-21 lead with a Hone-Dull block, a Meyer kill and a Dull ace serve to take a 27-21 lead. Two Penguin points cut the lead to 27-23. A Meyer kill made it 28-23. With a Farley kill and an OSU error, Youngstown State cut the margin to three at 28-25. A Meyer kill set match point at 29-25. A Penguin error ended the game at 30-25 to give Ohio State a 3-0 win in the match. The Buckeyes hit .156 for the game to .022 for Youngstown State.
Ohio State hit .299 for the match to .043 for Youngstown State. The Buckeyes had a 44-34 margin in kills and an eight to one advantage in aces. OSU’s Dull had a career/match-high three ace serves. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 45-44 edge in digs with Dull producing a career/match-high 14. At the net, the Buckeyes enjoyed a 13 to three margin in team blocks. OSU’s Dozier collected a match-high five assist blocks in the match. OSU setter Hughes had a team-high 24 assists with Hone adding 17. Youngstown State’s Karla Everhart recorded a match-high 27 assists with Dani Soubliere adding seven.
Ohio State returns to action next Tuesday when they face Illinois State (6-2) in Normal, Ill. at 7 p.m.
