No. 23 Women’s Volleyball opens Big Ten play Friday against Northwestern and hosts Michigan State Sunday – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio– The 23rd-ranked OhioState (6-3) women’s volleyball team begins Big Ten Conference action this Friday when the Buckeyes host Northwestern (9-2) at 7 p.m. Conference play continues Sunday at 2 p.m. when OhioState hosts MichiganState (9-3). Last week the Buckeyes opened the week with a 3-0 (32-30, 30-22, 30-12) win at Illinois State but lost home matches against fourth-ranked Southern California, 3-2 (27-30, 30-20, 28-30, 30-26, 16-14) and Oregon, 3-0 (30-17, 30-18, 30-27) in the Sports Imports Classic.
A LOOK AT OHIOSTATE
Head coach Jim Stone is in his 26th season with the 23rd-ranked Buckeyes. OhioState is 6-3 on the season after winning at IllinoisState, 3-0 (32-30, 30-22, 30-12) on Tuesday and falling to fourth-ranked Southern California, 3-2 (27-30, 30-20, 28-30, 30-26, 16-14) and Oregon, 3-0 (30-17, 30-18, 30-27) in the Sports Imports Classic last weekend.
Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) leads the Buckeyes in points per game with a 5.24 average. Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) ranks second at 4.55 with Katie Dull (Fr., Solo, Ohio) third at 3.41. Meyer leads the team in kills per game at 4.21 with McCarthy second at 3.48 and Dull third at 2.93. Kristen Dozier (So., SandySpring, Md.) is the top percentage hitter on the squad with a .390 average. McCarthy ranks second at .309 and Meyer third at .294. At setter Betsy Hone (Fr., Celina, Ohio) has a 10.81 assists per game average with Ashley Hughes (So., Carroll, Ohio) averaging 10.21. McCarthy has produced a team-high 15 ace serves with a .52 per game average. Kaila Calhoun (Fr., Elkhart, Ind.) (.24) and Dull (.26) are tied for second with seven aces. Defensively, Ami Stevens (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio) has a team-high 2.97 digs per game average for the Buckeyes. Calhoun ranks second at 2.62 with Meyer third at 2.34. At the net, Meyer leads the team in blocking with a 1.52 per game average with four solos and 40 assists. Dozier ranks third at .93 with three solos and 24 assists. McCarthy is third at .86 with seven solos and 18 assists. Meyer has a .969 reception percentage to lead the squad with 130 reception attempts with four errors. Stevens ranks second at .967 with 242 attempts with eight errors. As a team, OhioState is averaging 19.93 points, 15.24 kills per game and is hitting .237. The Buckeyes average 2.83 aces, 14.83 digs and 2.88 blocks per game. Buckeye opponents average 16.24 points, 13.17 kills and are hitting .162. A LOOK AT NORTHWESTERN
Head coach Keylor Chan is in his eighth season for the Wildcats. Northwestern is 9-2 overall and have won seven consecutive matches. In home matches last week, Northwestern defeated Drake, 3-0 (30-19, 30-22, 30-17), Western Michigan, 3-0 (30-15, 30-22, 30-23) and Saint Louis, 3-1 (30-26, 30-15, 28-30, 30-20).
Lindsay Anderson leads the team in points per game at 5.00. Courtnie Paulus ranks second at 4.24 with Chelsy Hyser third at 3.54. Anderson has a team-high 4.25 kills per game average with Paulus second at 3.44 and Brittani Gray third at 3.16. Hyser is the top percentage hitter on the squad at .388 with Sabel Moffett second at .283. At setter, Elyse Glab has a team-high 13.91 assist per game average with Stephanie Jurivich second at 11.13. Anderson and Paulus share team-high honors with 16 ace serves each at .44 per game. Hyser ranks third with 10 (.28). Defensively, Kate Nobilio leads the team with a 6.33 digs per game average. Paulus ranks second at 2.83 with Anderson third at 2.81. At the net, Moffett has a team-high 1.36 blocks per game average with 10 solos and 24 assists. Hyser ranks second at 1.11 with nine solos and 31 assists. As a team, Northwestern is averaging 21.79 points and 16.81 kills per game while hitting .284. The Wildcats average 15.06 assists, 2.03 aces, 18.08 digs and 2.96 blocks per game. Opponents average 13.58 points and 11.19 kills per game while hitting .105. OHIO STATE – NORTHWESTERN SERIES
OhioState leads the series with Northwestern, 41-16. The Buckeyes have a 20-5 mark in Columbus. OSU has won five of the last six matches played, falling 3-2 (30-28, 24-30, 26-30, 30-27, 15-11) last season in Evanston while winning 3-0 (30-13, 30-28, 30-23), in Columbus.
A LOOK AT MICHIGANSTATE
Head coach Cathy George is in her third season for the Spartans. MichiganState has a 9-3 overall record and has won their last nine matches. Last week the Spartans won at Eastern Michigan, 3-0 (30-19, 30-20, 30-17) and defeated Central Michigan, 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-25) at home.
Katie Johnson leads the Spartans in points per game at 5.54. Ashley Schatzle ranks second at 4.83 with Jenilee Rathje third at 2.89. Johnson is averaging a team-high 4.53 kills per game with Schatzel second at 4.32 and Vanessa King third at 2.10. Jessica Hohl is the top percentage hitter on the squad at .339 with Schatzle second at .295. At setter, Lauren O’Reilly is averaging 12.80 assists per game for the Spartans. Johnson leads the team with 22 aces (.55 per game) with O’Reilly with 20 (.49). Defensively, Schatzel has a team-high 3.27 digs per game average with Miken Trogdon second at 3.15. At the net, Rathje has a team-high 1.48 blocks per game with four solos and 55 assists. King ranks second at .72 with a solo and 27 assist blocks and Hohl ranks third at .68 on five solos and 23 assists. As a team, MichiganState is averaging 20.91 points and 16.05 kills while hitting .260. The Spartans average 14.68 assists, 2.00 aces, 14.68 digs and 2.87 blocks per game. MichiganState opponents average 15.33 points and 11.78 kills per game while hitting .145. Spartan opponents average 11.10 assists, 1.12 aces, 13.61 digs and 2.43 blocks per game.

OhioState leads the series with MichiganState, 37-24. The Buckeyes have a 19-7 mark in Columbus. OSU has won the last six matches including a 3-0 (30-28, 30-22, 30-22) win in Columbus and a 3-0 (30-26, 30-25, 30-13) victory in East Lansing last season.
Head Coach Jim Stone announces he will retire after the 2007 season
Jim Stone, OhioState women’s volleyball head coach, announced Monday he will retire effective July 31, 2008.
“I have been coaching every fall for 29 years,” Stone said. “I’ve found every season challenging and fun. I’d like to thank both OhioState and University of Wyoming for the opportunity to pursue a passion.”
Gene Smith, director of athletics at The Ohio State University praised the career of Stone.
“Jim has been an ambassador for The Ohio State University and our volleyball program for more than a quarter century,” Smith said. “His record and list of accomplishments overshadow the positive effect he has had on hundreds of young people over the years. He will be missed.”
“I know I will miss coaching good players and I’ve been fortunate to be able to do that,” Stone said. “Watching players improve and achieve great things is a thrill for which I have no words to describe.”
With regards to his future plans, Stone is keeping his options open.
“I am not going to rule out coaching again, but right now I would like to step away to work on some volleyball-related projects that I’m excited about.”
MEYER MOVES TO FOURTH IN OHIOSTATE CAREER KILLS
Danielle Meyer collected 43 kills in the three matches last week and now has 1,456 career kills for the Buckeyes. She now ranks fourth in career kills after starting the week at No. 7. Meyer moved past Leisa Wissler (1988-91) with 1,428, Gabriele Jobst (1991-94) with 1,434 and Lisa Bettio (1982-85) with 1,442. She needs eight kills to move past No. 3 Jenny Jackson (1992-95) with 1,463.
MEYER NOW STANDS FIFTH IN OHIO STATE CAREER POINTS
Danielle Meyer recorded 49.5 points in the three matches last week and now has 1,757.5 career points and has moved to fifth on the OhioState career points list. She began the week ranked eighth. Meyer passed Suzie Stiling (1999-02) with 1,719.0 points, Gabriele Jobst (1991-94) with 1,738.0, and Lisa Bettio (1982-85) with 1,741.0. Meyer needs 40 points to move past No. 4 Leisa Wissler (1988-91) with 1,797.
DULL EQUALS HER CAREER HIGH AGAINST THE TROJANS
Katie Dull equaled her career-high of 14 kills in the match against Southern California. She previously recorded 14 kills against YoungstownState. Dull added 11 digs in the match. She has started all nine matches this season and is averaging 3.41 points, 2.93 kills and 2.04 digs per game.
HUGHES COLLECTS BIG NUMBERS AGAINST SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
Ashley Hughes had numerous career-highs in the match against Southern California. She produced 52 assists against the Trojans and added five kills, five assist blocks and 14 digs in the match. Hughes has played in five matches with season and has started the last two. For the season, she is averaging 10.21 assists, 1.50 digs and .86 blocks per game.
MCCARTHY HAS DOUBLE-FIGURE DIGS, TWICE
Briana McCarthy collected 10 digs at Southern Illinois and added a season-high 11 against Southern California last week. Both matches produced double-doubles with 15 kills against the Redbirds and 12 against the Trojans. McCarthy has started all nine matches this season and is averaging 4.55 points, 3.48 kills, 1.48 digs and .86 blocks per game.
MCCARTHY TIES FOR 11TH IN OHIOSTATE CAREER SOLO BLOCKS
Briana McCarthy recorded a solo block against Southern California and Oregon to five her 45 in her career and move her into a tie for 11th on the OhioState career solos blocks list. She is tied with Holly O’Leary (1987-90). McCarthy is one block behind teammate Danielle Meyer who is 10th with 46.
CALHOUN POSTS CAREER-HIGHS AGAINST USC
Kaila Calhoun switched from libero to outside hitter after the first game against Southern California and produced several career highs. She collected career-highs of 9.5 points, eight kills and 16 digs against the Trojans. Calhoun has played in all nine matches with four starts at outside hitter and three at libero. She is averaging 2.62 digs per game on the season and has a .941 reception percentage with 169 attempts and 10 errors.
MEYER POSTS SEASON-HIGHS AGAINST SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
Danielle Meyer produced season-highs of 22 points, 19 kills and five assists against Southern California. Her previous best in points was 20.5 and in kills, 17 against SoutheastMissouriState. Meyer has started all nine matches this season and leads the team with averages of 5.24 points and 4.21 kills per game.
STEVENS TAKES A TURN AT OUTSIDE HITTER
Ami Stevens started at outside hitter at IllinoisState Tuesday and produced a season-high 12 kills in the match. She hit a season-high .579 (12-1-19) against the Redbirds. Stevens has started the last three matches at outside hitter but switched back to libero against Southern California and Oregon.
DOZIER POSTS A SEASON-HIGH EIGHT BLOCKS AGAINST USC
Kristen Dozier recorded a season-high eight assist blocks against Southern California last week. Her previous best this season was five against YoungstownState. Dozier added seven kills in the match to record a season-high 11 points against the Trojans. She has played in all nine matches with seven starts this season. Dozier is hitting a team-high .390 while averaging 1.79 kills, 93 blocks and 2.31 points per game.
OHIO STATE RANKED 23RD IN THE CSTV/AVCA COACHES POLL
OhioState is ranked 23rd in the CSTV (College Sports Television/AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) 2007 Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll. The Buckeyes are one of five Big Ten squads ranked in the CSTV/AVCA Poll. Others include PennState third, Wisconsin ninth, Michigan 10th and Minnesota 12th. Purdue is listed as receiving votes.
MEYER A UNANIMOUS CHOICE FOR THE 2007 PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN TEAM
Middle blocker Danielle Meyer was one of three unanimous selections to the 2007 Preseason All-Big Ten team. Meyer is a two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association third-team All-American and a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection. This is the second time she has earned preseason honors. PennState and Wisconsin each placed three players on the team while Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, OhioState and Purdue had one player each on the team.
Meyer, a 2006 ESPN The Magazine Second-Team Academic All-American, averaged 4.26 kills 1.96 digs and .85 blocks per game last season while hitting .301. She started all 32 matches in 2006, the first 22 at outside hitter and the last 10 at middle blocker.
OHIOSTATE PICKED TO FINISH FOURTH IN THE BIG TEN PRESEASON POLL
The Buckeyes, by a vote of the Big Ten Conference coaches, OhioState were tabbed to finish fourth in the league. Four-time defending Big Ten champion PennState was picked to finish first with Wisconsin second and Minnesota third. Following OhioState, Purdue was ranked fifth, Michigan sixth, Michigan State seventh, Illinois eighth, Northwestern ninth, Iowa 10th and Indiana 11th.
HEAD COACH JIM STONE
Jim Stone enters his 26th season at OhioState. He has a 524-281 record with the Buckeyes and is 290-162 in Big Ten play. His squads have won Big Ten Championships in 1989, 1991 and 1994 and finished tied for second in 2004 being named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. He was the 1991 Volleyball Monthly National Coach of the Year and the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1989, 1991, 1994 and 2004. Under Stone, OhioState has participated in the NCAA championship in 15 of the last 18 years, advancing to the national semifinals in 1991 and 1994. Stone’s coaching career record includes three years at Wyoming (1979-1981). His 29-year career record is 574-323.
OHIOSTATE WINS THE ACTIVE ANKLE CHALLENGE
The Buckeyes won three matches last weekend at the Active Ankle Challenge in Muncie, Ind. OSU opened play with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-22, 30-19) win over Southeast Missouri State Friday. BallState, with a 3-2 (26-30, 30-23, 30-24, 25-30, 15-13) victory over Maine completed the first round. The Buckeyes started Saturday’s second round with a 3-0 (30-12, 30-19, 30-19) win over Maine. SouthwestMissouriState defeated BallState, 3-2 (30-22, 30-23, 23-30, 27-30, 15-13) to complete the second round. SouthwestMissouriState started round three with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-20) win over Maine. The Buckeyes won the Challenge with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-28, 30-23) victory over BallState. OhioState’s Danielle Meyer was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament with teammates Ami Stevens and Briana McCarthy selected to the All-Tournament Team. Also named to the team were Brenna Schlader and Molly Davis from SoutheastMissouriState, Lindsay Allman from Maine and Alyssa Rio from BallState.
MEYER AND DOZIER EARN ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS AT THE SPORTS IMPORTS CLASSIC
Danielle Meyer was named the Best Attacker and Kristen Dozier, the Best Blocker at the 2007 Sports Imports Classic. Other all-tournament members included USC’s Asia Kaczor as the Most Valuable Player and Taylor Carico as the Best Setter. Oregon’s Heather Meyers was named the Best Server and Katie Swoboda, the Best Libero. Southern California (2-0) won the Classic with a 3-2 win OhioState (0-2) and a 3-0 victory over Purdue (1-1). Oregon (1-1) lost to Purdue, 3-1 and defeated OhioState, 3-0.
