Four Buckeye Rowers Named CRCA All-Central Region – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four members of the Ohio State rowing team have been selected to the CRCA All-Central Region teams, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced Tuesday. Three student-athletes were named to the first team and one was a second team honoree, with all four rowing in the nationally-ranked first varsity eight boat. For their achievements in the classroom, a team-record six Buckeyes also were named CRCA National Scholar Athletes.
Junior Gabriele Albertaviciute of Vilnius, Lithuania, followed her 2007 First Team All-Big Ten selection with a First Team All-Central Region honor. It is her first regional award. Senior Annabelle Fago, a three-time CRCA All-American from Giessen, Germany, garnered her fourth first team honor of her career. Fellow senior and team co-captain Jessica Shepherd, a Richmond, Ohio native, also added a first team nod to her 2006 Second Team All-Central Region award.
Senior Briony Clare from Sydney, Australia, was the lone Buckeye named Second Team All-Central Region. It is the first season award of her career.
Six Buckeyes were named CRCA National Scholar Athletes. To receive the award, student-athletes must be in at least her second year of college and have a 3.5 cumulative grade point average for her career, along with competing in 75 percent of the spring races or racing in a regional conference event.
Shepherd, a biology major, was recognized for the second year in a row, while seniors Giulia Benedetti, a psychology major from Columbus, Ohio, and co-captain Justine Mahler, an engineering major from Cincinnati, Ohio, received the award for the first time. Also earning their first National Scholar Athlete honors were juniors Andrea Dymalski (health sciences major; Bremen, Germany) and Simone Haubner (international business major; Leipzig, Germany) as well as sophomore Chelsea Smith (social and behavioral sciences; Dublin, Ohio).
