COLUMBUS, Ohio –
The 19th-ranked Ohio State (9-6 overall, 1-3 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad opens play in the ALC Tournament by playing 18th-ranked Penn State Thursday at Johns Hopkins’ Homewood Field. The winner will face top-ranked Northwestern (15-1) Friday in one semifinal with 10th-ranked Vanderbilt (11-4) playing at eighth-ranked (tie) Johns Hopkins (10-6) in the other semifinal. The semifinal winners play Sunday for the Tournament championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Last week the Buckeyes closed out the regular season with a 21-5 loss at top-ranked Northwestern.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The head coach for the 19th-ranked Buckeyes is Sue Stimmel. Ohio State is 9-6 on the season and 1-3 in the American Lacrosse Conference. Last week the Buckeyes lost 21-5 at top-ranked Northwestern. Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) has a team-high 72 points on the season with 28 goals and a team-high 44 assists. Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) ranks second with 41 points with a team-high 37 goals and four assists. Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) ranks third with 31 points with 28 goals and three assists. Bethany Carey (Jr., Eldersburg, Md.) leads the team in ground balls with 41. Danielle Gibson (Sr., Springfield, Pa.) ranks second with 30 and Laura Burke (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) Amanda Shimp (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) tied for third with 23 each. In draw controls, Haggerty has a team-high 28 with Shimp second with 24. Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) is third with 16 with Kendall Gysin (So., Noblesville, Ind.) and Patane tied for fourth with 12. Carey and Gibson are tied for the team lead in caused turnovers with 26. Burke ranks third with 13 with Shimp fourth with 11. In goal, Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) has 15 starts on the season and an 8-5 record. She has a 10.89 goals against average and a .504 save percentage. Joy DeMarco (Sr., Hudson, Ohio) has played in nine games and has a 1-1 record. She has an 8.11 goals against average and a .533 save percentage. A LOOK AT PENN STATE
The head coach for the 18th-ranked Nittany Lions is Suzanne Isidor. Penn State is 8-7 on the season and is 0-4 in the ALC. Last week the Nittany Lions lost, 17-10, at Johns Hopkins. Jessi Lieb leads the team in points with 39. She has a team-high 26 goals and 13 assists. Lindsay Dutch ranks second in points with 38, collecting 22 goals and a team-high 16 assists. Kerry Shea, with 33 points, ranks third and has 25 goals and eight assists. Goalie Cammie Jurkowsky has a team-high 34 ground balls on the season with Lieb second with 32 and Kerry Shea third with 26. In draw controls, Dutch has a team-high 35 with Kerry Shea second with 22 and Renee Cipro third with 21. Lieb leads the team in caused turnovers with 19. Kerry Shea and Cipro are tied for second with 11. In goal, Jurkowsky has started all 15 games and has an 8-7 record. She has a 9.59 goals against average and a .472 saves percentage.
OHIO STATE – PENN STATE SERIES
Penn State leads the series with Ohio State, 8-3. This season, Ohio State won, 9-8, at Penn State.
A LOOK AT NORTHWESTERN
The head coach for the top-ranked Wildcats is Kelly Amonte Hiller. Northwestern is 15-1 on the season and is 4-0 in the ALC. Last week the Wildcats defeated Ohio State, 21-5 and Hofstra, 16-4, at home. Northwestern has won 15 straight matches. Hannah Nielsen leads the Wildcats in scoring with 90 points. She has 38 goals and a team-high 52 assists. Hilary Bowen ranks second in points with 72 with 42 goals and 30 assists. Kristen Kjellman, with 69 points is third and has a team-high 50 goals and 19 assists. Christy Finch has a team-high 39 ground balls on the season with Meredith second with 27. Kjellman leads the team in draw controls with 50. Frank is second with 33. In caused turnovers, Finch has a team-leading 44. Frank ranks second with 20. In goal, Lathrop has started every match and has a 15-1 record this season. She has a 5.49 goals against average and a .606 saves percentage.
OHIO STATE – NORTHWESTERN SERIES
Northwestern has a 4-2 lead in the series with Ohio State. Last week in Evanston, Northwestern won, 21-5.
A LOOK AT VANDERBILT
The head coach for the 10th-ranked Commodores is Cathy Swezey. Vanderbilt has an 11-4 overall record and is 3-1 in the American Lacrosse Conference. Kendall Thrift leads the team with 58 points with 29 goals and a team-high 29 assists. Margie Curran ranks second with 56 points. She has a team-high 42 goals and 14 assists. Jennifer Tapscott is third in points with 30 with 19 goals and 11 assists. In ground balls, Sasha Cielak has a team-high 34 with goalie Brooke Shinaberry second at 31. Curran is the team leader in draw controls with 52. Cara Giordano ranks second with 30. Leading the team in caused turnovers is Cielak with 37. Giordano ranks second with 12. In goal, Shinaberry has started all 15 games and has an 11-4 record. She has a 10.22 goals against average and a .437 save percentage.
OHIO STATE – VANDERBILT SERIES
Vanderbilt has a 11-1 lead in the series with Ohio State. This year, the Commodores won, 10-9, in Columbus. Seven of the last nine games have been won by one goal and two of those were overtime games.
A LOOK AT JOHNS HOPKINS
The head coach for the eighth-ranked (tie) Blue Jays is Janine Tucker. Johns Hopkins is 10-6 overall and is 2-2 in the ALC. Last week Johns Hopkins defeated Penn State, 17-10, at home and won, 15-9, at Towson on Monday. Mary Key had a team-high 105 points with team-highs of 58 goals and 47 assists. Sarah Walsh is second on the team in points with 36 with 22 goals and 14 assists. Lauren Schwarzmann ranks third with 35 points with 27 goals and eight assists. Cherie Michaud leads the team in ground balls with 39. Sarah Gallion is second with 35. Key and Kadie Stamper share team-high honors in draw controls with 39 each. Stamper has a team-high 19 caused turnovers with Gallion second with 19. In goal, Amelia Harris has played in 12 games with nine starts. She has a 6-3 record. Harris has a 10.69 goals against average and a .437 saves percentage. Lizzie O’Ferrall has played in 10 games with seven starts. She has a 4-3 record. O’Ferrall has a 10.28 goals against average and a .417 saves percentage.
OHIO STATE – JOHNS HOPKINS SERIES
Johns Hopkins leads the series with Ohio State, 4-2. Earlier this season the Blue Jays won, 15-14, in Columbus.
SLAHOR HOLDS SEVERAL OSU RECORDS
Kristen Slahor, with two goals and two assists at Northwestern, has improved her record numbers for the Buckeyes. She holds the Ohio State season records for points with 72 and assists with 44. In career statistics, Slahor is Ohio State’s all-time leader in assists with 77, ranks seventh in points with 127 and has moved to 13th in career goals with 50. She passed teammate Natale Miller who has 49.
PATANE ADDS A GOAL AND TWO ASSISTS AT NORTHWESTERN
Jessica Patane recorded a goal and two assists last week at Northwestern. She ranks second on the team in points with 41 with a team-high 37 goals and four assists. Her 37 goals on the season ranks sixth on the Ohio State season records list. Patane has 61 career goals, ranking 12th for the Buckeyes. She ranks 14th in career points with 71 (61 goals, 10 assists).
CORNICELLO SCORES TWICE AT NORTHWESTERN
Rachael Cornicello scored two first half goals at Northwestern on the bench. She now has three goals and an assist for the season. Cornicello has played in seven matches this season.
GIBSON SHARES TEAM LEAD IN CAUSED TURNOVERS
Danielle Gibson had two caused turnovers at Northwestern to give her 26 for the season. She shares team-high honors with Bethany Carey. Gibson added two ground balls against the Wildcats and has 30 for the season, ranking second on the squad.
GRAF POSTS A CAREER-HIGH FOUR GROUND BALLS AT NORTHWESTERN
Libby Graf collected a career-high four ground balls at Northwestern to give her 18 on the season. She added a caused turnover against the Wildcats. Graf has played in 13 matches with eight starts.
CAREY LEADS TEAM IN GROUND BALLS
Bethany Carey recorded three ground balls at Northwestern to give her 41 on the season to lead the Buckeyes. She added a draw control and a caused turnover against the Wildcats. Carey is tied with Danielle Gibson for the team lead in caused turnovers with 26.
OHIO STATE IS RANKED 19TH IN THE IWLCA POLL
Ohio State is ranked in a 19th in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association weekly poll. The Buckeyes were tied for 19th in the poll last week in making their first appearance in the poll since mid-April of 2005 when they were ranked 19th.
OHIO STATE IN THE NATIONAL STATISTICS
Ohio State has several players nationally ranked after last week’s games. Kristen Slahor ranks seventh in points per game at 4.80 per game and is fourth in assists at 2.93. Bethany Carey and Danielle Gibson are tied for 21st in caused turnovers at 1.73 per game. Carey is tied for 28th in ground balls with a 2.73 per game average. Kristen Gilwee is 19th in save percentage at .504 and is 37th in goals against average at 10.89. In team statistics, the Buckeyes are 28th in caused turnovers at 8.93 per game. Ohio State ranks 31st in scoring defense at 10.40 and is 34th in scoring offense at 11.40.
Jessica Patane NAMED ALC CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – April 23
The American Lacrosse Conference has announced that Jessica Patane and Northwestern’s Kristen Kjellman and have both been named the ALC Co-Player of the Week following action April 16-23, 2007. Both players led their teams to 2-0 records, including a conference win on the week. Ohio State’s Patane scored the winning goal with one second left in regulation at eighth-ranked Penn State to give Ohio State a 9-8 victory in conference play. She scored a game-high four goals in the game, all coming in the second half. After trailing by three in the first half, Patane gave OSU the lead at 27:29 (6-5) and pushed the lead to two at 24:49 (7-5). After a Penn State goal cut the lead to 7-6, Patane scored at 10:48 to put the lead at two, 8-6. The Nittany Lions rallied to tie the game at eight with 4:24 left. Patane collected a missed Buckeye shot and scored the winning goal with one second left in the game. She also scored three goals in OSU’s 17-4 win at Bucknell for her eighth multi-goal game of the season.
BUCKEYES NOW 5-1 IN OVERTIME GAMES
Ohio State, with the California win, is now 5-1 in overtime games. The Buckeyes defeated Davidson, 10-9, in 1999. In 2003, OSU won, 11-10, at Cornell and lost, in two overtimes, to Vanderbilt, 12-11. Ohio State won at Stanford, 10-9, in 2004. The Buckeyes won, 15-14, against St. Bonaventure (neutral site) and defeated California, 9-8, at home this season.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her 12th season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to OSU. Stimmel is 92-89 at Ohio State (12 years) and is 168-107 in her 18-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
GILWEE SELECTED TO ALC PRESEASON TEAM
Ohio State women’s lacrosse Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) has been selected to the 2007 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team by a vote of the league’s five head coaches. Gilwee played in 13 games as a freshman, starting 11. She had a 4-7 record averaging a 10.94 goals against average and a .526 saves percentage. She was named to the 2006 second team ALC All-Conference Team. Ohio State was picked to finished fifth in the Conference by a vote of the coaches. Two-time defending NCAA champion Northwestern was picked to win their third ALC title in a row.
REVIEWING OHIO STATE’S ALC GAMES
Northwestern 21, Ohio State 5
The 17th-ranked Ohio State (9-6, 1-3 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team dropped a 21-5 decision at top-ranked Northwestern (14-1, 4-0) Friday afternoon at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex. Ohio State’s Kristen Slahor and Rachael Cornicello scored two goal each with Jessica Patane adding one for the Buckeyes. Northwestern’s Kristen Kjellman, Aly Josephs and Casey Donohoe scored four goals each for the Wildcats.
Northwestern opened the scoring with a Donohoe goal at 28:36. Patane tied the game at one at 27:10. The Wildcats then scored 10 consecutive goals to take a 11-1 lead. The run began with goals by Hilary Bowen (27:00), Donohoe (24:42) and Josephs (18:57) to make it 4-1. Goals by Kjellman (17:42), Josephs (16:15) and Donohoe (14:14) expanded the lead to 7-1. An eight-meter goal by Josephs (13:20), a goal by Meredith Frank (13:01) and two Kjellman goals took the lead to 11-1. A Cornicello goal at 5:23 stopped the scoring run to make it 11-2. Goals by Donohoe (4:29) and Bowen (1:52) took the lead to 13-2. A second Cornicello goal at 1:32 closed out the half at 13-3, Northwestern.
The Wildcats opened the second half with seven straight goals to take a 20-3 lead. The run began with goals by Josephs (24:06) and Bowen (22:53). A Hannah Nielsen goal made it 16-3 at 18:01. Goals by Frank (16:39), Kjellman (14:32), Lindsay North (12:08) and Danielle Spencer (8:34) completed the run. OSU’s Slahor scored back-to-back goals at 5:24 and 1:11 to make it 20-5. Northwestern closed out the scoring in the game at 0:08 with a Maggie Bremer goal to make the final score, 21-5.
In goal, Ohio State’s Kristen Gilwee took the loss playing the first half making five saves and giving up 13 goals. Joy DeMarco played the second half making three saves and giving up eight goals. Northwestern’s Morgan Lathrop played 37:15 for the win while making two saves and giving up three goals. Wildcat Abby Bangser played the final 22:45 of the game and had three saves and gave up two goals.
Ohio State 9, Penn State 8
The Ohio State (8-5, 1-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team needed a last second goal by Jessica Patane to upset eighth-ranked Penn State (8-6, 0-3) Friday night at Jeffrey Field. Patane scored four goals in the game for the Buckeyes with Amanda Shimp and Natale Miller adding two each. Penn State’s Kerry Shea, Lindsay Dutch and Linsey Shea scored two goals each for the Nittany Lions.
Penn State opened the scoring with a Kerry Shea goal at 27:07. The Nittany Lions took a 2-0 lead with a Marisa Lozano goal at 24:52, assisted by Mary LeNoir. Shimp put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard with an eight-meter goal at 23:43. Linsey Shea made it 3-1 for Penn State at 19:31 on an assist from Kerry Shea. A Maria Valdersa eight-meter goal at 14:26 gave the Nittany Lions a 4-1 lead. The Buckeyes scored the next three goals to tie the game at four. A Kristen Slahor goal at 10:10 started the run. Miller posted back-to-back goals at 8:18 and 1:40 to tie the game at four. Penn State regained the lead at 5-4 with a Linsey Shea goal, assisted by Lindsay Dutch, at 1:01 to end the scoring for the half.
A Shimp goal at 29:08 tied the game at five. A Patane goal at 27:29, with a Slahor assist, gave Ohio State their first lead of the game at 6-5. Patane scored again at 24:49 to give Ohio State a 7-5 lead. Penn State cut the lead to 7-6 with a Kerry Shea goal at 21:24. Patane’s third goal of the game, assist by Slahor, at 10:48 made it 8-6. At 6:07, Lindsay Dutch scored to cut the lead to one at 8-7. A second Dutch goal, assisted by Mariel Bryan, at 4:24 tied the game at eight. The Nittany Lions controlled the draw and had two shots before a Laura Burke ground ball gave Ohio State possession. A Shimp shot with three seconds left was saved by Penn State goal Cammie Jurkowsky but Patane recovered the ball and scored the winning goal with one second left in the game for a 9-8 Buckeye victory.
Ohio State goalie Kristen Gilwee took the win in the contest making eight saves while giving up eight goals. Penn State’s Jurkowsky had six saves in the loss, giving up nine goals.
Vanderbilt 10, Ohio State 9
The Ohio State (7-5, 0-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team had a late rally fall short in a 10-9 loss to 15th-ranked Vanderbilt (9-4, 3-1) Sunday afternoon in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes trailed 10-7 before scoring two goals in the final three minutes, the last with 47 seconds left, but would get no closer. Ohio State’s Amanda Ship scored a team-high three goals for the Buckeyes while Margie Curran and Cara Giordano each recorded three goals for Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt opened the first half with a goal by Giordano at 25:47. OSU’s Natale Miller tied the game at one on an eight-meter goal at 22:31. The Buckeyes took a 2-1 lead at 21:34 by Shimp on an eight-meter attempt. The Commodores responded with the next three goals starting at 18:39 by Sara Downing to tie the game at two. Giordano gave Vanderbilt a 3-2 lead at 12:08 and Kendall Thrift made it 4-2 with a goal at 9:49. Ohio State’s Keri Yourick cut the lead to one at 4-3 with a goal at 8:42 to end the scoring for the half.
The Commodores opened the second half with four straight goals to take the lead to 8-3. The run began with a Margie Curran goal at 28:36, assisted by Thrift. Giordano scored her third goal of the game at 28:17 to make the lead, 6-3. Curren, at 27:02, scored with a Thrift assist. Thrift then scored at 24:55 on a Sara Downing assist to complete the run. Shimp’s goal at 24:03 started a three-goal run by the Buckeyes. Jessica Patane made it 8-5 with a goal, assisted by Miller, at 21:29. Ohio State cut the lead to two at 8-6 with Yourick’s second goal at 21:08 with an assist from Kristen Slahor. Vanderbilt took the lead to three at 9-6 with Curran’s third goal at 18:56 on an eight meter attempt. A Lauren Sterner goal for the Buckeyes at 12:03, on an eight-meter attempt, cut the margin to 9-7. Vanderbilt took the lead to three at 10-7 with an Ashley Paschall goal at 11:10 on a Jennifer Tapscott assist. The Buckeyes cut the lead to two at 10-8 on a Bethany Carey goal at 2:26. The Commodores controlled the draw but a Vanderbilt turnover at 1:25 gave Ohio State the ball leading to a Shimp goal, her third, with 47 seconds left in the game. The draw was controlled by Vanderbilt but each squad had a turnover to allow the Commodores to run out the final 25 seconds of the game to win, 10-9.
Ohio State’s Kristen Gilwee took the loss in goal for the Buckeyes making 17 saves and giving up 10 goals. Vanderbilt’s Brooke Shinaberry had five saves in the victory while giving up nine goals.
Johns Hopkins 15, Ohio State 14
The Ohio State (2-1, 0-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team lost in the final seconds, 15-14, to 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins (4-1, 1-0) at the North Turf Field Sunday afternoon. The Buckeyes overcame a four-goal (12-8) Blue Jay lead in the second half to tie the game at 14 with :49 seconds left but Johns Hopkins scored the winning goal with 12 seconds left on an eight meter shot by Kirby Houck to secure the win. Ohio State’s Kristen Slahor scored a game-high seven points with three goals and four assists with Kelly Haggerty adding four goals. Sam Schrum and Mary Key scored a team-high five points each in the game with Schrum recording four goals and an assist and Key, two goals and three assists.
Ohio State opened the scoring with a Keri Yourick goal at 20:24. Johns Hopkins scored the next four goals for a 4-1 lead. Schrum tied the game at one at 16:38 with a Key assist. The Blue Jays took a 2-1 lead with a Steph Janice goal at 16:26. Kirby Houck, assisted by Sarah Walsh, at 16:06 and a Walsh goal at 15:30, assisted by Lauren Schwarzmann, made it 4-1. Amanda Shimp scored to cut the lead to two (4-2) at 13:26. Schrum scored on an eight meter attempt at 12:03 and Walsh at 10:39 to make it 6-3. Slahor, assisted by Yourick at 9:27 made it 6-3. Schrum, with an eight meter goal at 8:31 made it 7-3. OSU’s Natale Miller scored at 8:03 on an eight meter attempt to cut the lead to three. The Buckeyes made it a two-goal (7-5) game at 7:00 with a Haggerty goal, assisted by Slahor. A Janice goal at 3:59 made it, 8-5, but OSU’s Megan Levins responded with an eight meter goal at 2:39 to make it 8-6. The Blue Jays, with a Key goal at 1:22, assisted by Alex Nolan, and a Janice goal at 0:47, assisted by Schrum, made it 10-6. The Buckeyes closed out the half with a Kendall Gysin goal at 38 seconds to trail by three, 10-7 at half.
The Buckeyes opened the second half with Joy DeMarco in goal. Haggerty opened the scoring at 27:44, assisted by Slahor to make it 10-8. The Blue Jays responded with a Key goal at 24:13, assisted by Houck, and a Walsh goal at 23:50 to take a four-goal lead at 12-8. A Slahor goal at 16:51 cut the lead to 12-9 and Haggerty, with an eight meter goal at 13:37 made it, 12-10. Johns Hopkins made it 13-10 with a Janice goal at 13:20, assisted by Key. Slahor’s eight meter goal at 10:53 cut the lead to two at 13-11. The Blue Jays responded with a Schrum goal, assisted by Key, at 7:56 to put the lead at three, 14-11. Johns Hopkins controlled the draw and had five shots with DeMarco making four saves before OSU controlled the ball leading to a Haggerty goal at 4:06, assisted by Slahor, to trail, 14-12. The Blue Jays controlled the draw but a turnover gave the Buckeyes the ball leading to a Yourick goal at 1:33, assisted by Slahor cutting the lead to one at 14-13. Johns Hopkins again controlled the draw but a turnover caused by Bethany Carey allowed her to score with 49 seconds left to tie the game at 14. The Blue Jays controlled the draw with both teams having turnovers in the action but Johns Hopkins scored with 12 seconds left on an eight meter goal by Houck to take a 15-14 lead. Ohio State controlled the draw and was awarded an eight meter attempt with .9 seconds left. Shimp’s shot was saved by Blue Jays goalie Amelia Harris to end the game, giving Johns Hopkins a 15-14 win.
In goal, Harris had the win while making 10 saves and giving up 14 goals. Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) started the game and played 30 minutes. She had five saves and gave up 10 goals. DeMarco played 30 minutes and had eight saves while giving up five goals.
