COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 19th-ranked Ohio State (9-7 overall, 1-3 American Lacrosse Conference, fourth place) women’s lacrosse team closed out the 2007 season with a 9-7 loss to No. 18 Penn State in the opening game of the American Lacrosse Conference Tournament held at Johns Hopkins.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The head coach for the 19th-ranked Buckeyes is Sue Stimmel. Ohio State finishes 9-7 on the season and was 1-3 in the American Lacrosse Conference finishing fourth. Last week the Buckeyes lost 9-7 to No. 18 Penn State in the ALC Tournament at Johns Hopkins. Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) leads the team with 72 points on the season with 28 goals and a team-high 45 assists. Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) is second with 42 points with a team-high 38 goals and four assists. Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) is third with 32 points with 29 goals and three assists. Amanda Shimp (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.), with 26 points (25 goals, 1 assist) ranks fourth. Bethany Carey (Jr., Eldersburg, Md.) leads the team in ground balls with 43. Danielle Gibson (Sr., Springfield, Pa.) ranks second with 33 and Shimp is third with 25. Libby Graf (So., Delaware, Ohio) and Laura Burke (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) are tied for fourth with 23 each. In draw controls, Haggerty has a team-high 30 with Shimp second with 27. Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) is third with 17 while Kendall Gysin (So., Noblesville, Ind.) and Patane are tied for fourth with 12. Gibson leads the squad in caused turnovers with 28. Carey is second with 26 with Burke and Shimp tied for fourth with 13. In goal, Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) has started all 16 games this season and has an 8-6 record. She has a 10.75 goals against average and a .502 save percentage. Joy DeMarco (Sr., Hudson, Ohio) has played in nine games and has a 1-1 record. She has an 8.11 goals against average and a .533 save percentage. FIVE BUCKEYES NAMED ALC ALL-CONFERENCE
The American Lacrosse Conference has announced the 2007 ALC All-Conference teams as voted by the coaches. Ohio State placed Jessica Patane on the first team and had Danielle Gibson, Kristen Gilwee, Amanda Shimp, Kristen Slahor named to the second team.
Ohio State placed five players on the two, 12-player teams as did Vanderbilt. Northwestern had seven players named to the team with Johns Hopkins having four and Penn State three.
Conference regular season champion Northwestern received three of the four top honors with Player of the Year, Kristen Kjellman, Goalie of the Year, Morgan Lathrop and Coach of the Year, Kelly Amonte Hiller. Sam Schrum of Johns Hopkins was named the Rookie of the Year.
SLAHOR ADDS AN ASSIST AGAINST PENN STATE
Kristen Slahor recorded an assist against Penn State to give her a team-high 45 on the season. With her 28 goals, she has a team-high 73 points on the season. In 16 games this season, she collected seven ground balls and four draw controls. She scored on four of 14 eight-meter attempts and had two game-winning goals. Slahor was named to the second team of the American Lacrosse Conference All-Conference Team.
SLAHOR SETS TWO OSU SEASON RECORDS AND TIES ONE GAME MARK
Kristen Slahor broke two Ohio State season records this year. Her 45 assists broke the record held by Tracey Bounds of 25 in 2002 and her 73 points (28 goals, 45 assists) broke the points record previously held by Bounds of 61 (36-25) set in 2002. Slahor tied the Ohio State game record of eight assists against UC Davis. She tied Mara Simpson who set the mark in 1996 against Earlham.
SLAHOR HOLDS THE OHIO STATE CAREER ASSIST RECORD
Kristen Slahor finished her junior season with 78 career assists to hold the Ohio State career record previously held by Tracey Bounds (2000-03) with 62. Slahor finished the season ranked seventh in Ohio State career points with 128 with 50 goals and 78 assists. Her 50 goals have her tied for 13th on the OSU career list with teammate Natale Miller (2004-07).
PATANE LEADS BUCKEYES WITH 38 GOALS
Jessica Patane scored a goal against Penn State to give her a team-high 38 on the season. With her four assists, she has 42 points this season and ranks second on the team. A starter in all 16 games, Patane collected 10 ground balls, 12 draw controls and six caused turnovers. She made one of four eight-meter attempts this season and had two winning goals. Patane scored at least one goal in OSU’s last 13 games. She was named to the first team of the American Lacrosse Conference All-Conference Team.
PATANE’S 38 GOALS TIES FOR FIFTH IN OSU SEASON RECORDS
Jessica Patane, with 38 goals this season, has tied for fifth in Ohio State season goals. She has tied Kelly Kremer who had 38 in 2005.
PATANE RANKS 14TH IN CAREER POINTS, 12TH IN CAREER GOALS
Jessica Patane has collected 72 points in her career and ranks 14th on the Ohio State career list. She has 62 goals and 10 assists. Her 62 goals have her ranked 12th in OSU career goals.
HAGGERTY POSTS A GOAL AGAINST PENN STATE
Kelly Haggerty scored a goal and added two draw controls against Penn State last week. She finished her freshmen season with 29 goals to rank second on the team. With her three assists, Haggerty has 32 points for the year and ranks third on the team. She contributed 11 ground balls, a team-high 30 draw controls and seven caused turnovers for the season. Her 30 draw controls this season ranks her seventh on the Ohio State season list. Haggerty scored on five of nine eight-meter attempts and had one game winning goal in 2007. She had eight games with two or more goals, posting a career-high four goals in three games.
SHIMP NETS THREE GOALS AGAINST PENN STATE
Amanda Shimp scored a team-high three goals against Penn State last week. She added two ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers in the contest. Shimp has 25 goals this season with one assist for 26 points, ranking fourth on the team. She is third on the team in ground balls with 25, second in draw controls with 27 and is tied for third in caused turnovers with 13. Shimp was named to the second team American Lacrosse Conference All-Conference Team. Her 27 draw controls has tied for ninth on the Ohio State season list with Regina Oliver (2005) and Megan Mirick (2002). Shimp has 41 career draw controls and is 11th on the Ohio State career list. She has scored on a team-high six of 12 eight-meter attempts this year.
YOURICK HAS A GOAL AND AN ASSIST AGAINST PENN STATE
Keri Yourick (So., Castle Rock, Colo.) scored a goal and added an assist against Penn State last week. She recorded one draw control in the contest. Yourick has started all 16 games this season and has 15 goals and six assists for 21 points on the year. She has contributed three ground balls, 10 draw controls and two caused turnovers and had two winning goals this season.
GRAF TIES FOR FOURTH ON THE SQUAD IN GROUND BALLS WITH 23
Libby Graf collected 23 ground balls on the season and ranks in a tie for fourth on the season. She added three draw controls and nine caused turnovers. Graf scored her first collegiate goal at Bucknell this season. She played in 14 games this season and had nine starts. She had a career-high five ground balls against Penn State in the American Lacrosse Conference Tournament game.
GIBSON LEADS THE TEAM IN CAUSED TURNOVERS WITH 28
Danielle Gibson had three ground balls and two caused turnovers against Penn State to end the season with 33 ground balls and 28 caused turnovers. She is the team leader in caused turnovers and ranks second on the team in ground balls. Gibson collected four draw controls on the year in starting all 16 games. She had career-highs of five ground balls and five caused turnovers against Virginia Tech and a career-high three draw controls against UC Davis. Gibson was named second team All-Conference in the American Lacrosse Conference. For her career, she has 29 caused turnovers and ranks 15th on the Ohio State career list.
GILWEE RANKS FIFTH FOR MOST WINS IN A SEASON
Kristen Gilwee finished the 2007 season with an 8-6 record while starting in all 16 games. Her eight wins in a season ranks fifth in OSU season records. Gilwee finished the season with a .502 saves percentage with 138 saves. Her 138 saves ranks seventh in Ohio State season records. She had a 10.75 goals against average giving up 137 goals. Gilwee was a second team ALC selection this season and is currently ranked 16th nationally in saves percentage and 32nd in goals against average.
GILWEE RANKS THIRD IN OHIO STATE CAREER WINS
Kristen Gilwee has a 12-13 career record and stands third in career win for Ohio State. She is fourth in career saves with 249 and sixth in saves percentage at .512. Gilwee ranks seventh in goals against average with a mark of 10.83.
DeMARCO PLAYS IN NINE GAMES THIS SEASON
Joy DeMarco saw action in goal in nine games this season. She posted a 1-1 record while playing 207 minutes this season. DeMarco had a .533 saves percentage and an 8.11 goals against average this year.
DeMARCO RANKS THIRD IN OHIO STATE CAREER SAVES PERCENTAGE
Joy DeMarco finishes her career with a .517 saves percentage, ranking third on the Ohio State career list. Her 61 saves ranks eighth on the Ohio State career list and she is seventh in goals against average at 10.83. DeMarco played in 20 games during her career and had a 1-2 record.
CAREY IS TEAM LEADER IN GROUND BALLS
Bethany Carey collected two ground balls against Penn State to give her a team-high 43 on the season. She has 10 draw controls and is second on the squad in caused turnovers with 26. Carey has four goals and an assist this season and has played in all 16 games with 12 starts. She scored a goal in two eight-meter attempts this season. Carey had a career-high six ground balls at Robert Morris and recorded five at Davidson and against Virginia Tech. She had a career-high four caused turnovers at Notre Dame and against St. Bonaventure.
MILLER RECORDS A GOAL AGAINST PENN STATE
Natale Miller scored a goal and added a draw control against Penn State last week. She has 21 points on the season in her 16 starts with 14 goals and seven assists. She has recorded 18 ground balls, 17 draw controls to rank third on the team and has seven caused turnovers. She scored on two of seven eight-meter attempts and had one winning goal.
MILLER RANKS FIFTH IN CAREER DRAW CONTROLS AND IS TIED FOR 13TH IN CAREER GOALS
Natale Miller closed out the 2007 season with 58 career draw controls to rank fifth on the Ohio State career list. Her 50 career goals have her tied for 13th on the OSU career list with teammate Kristen Slahor (1005-07).
ZERHUSEN SEES ACTION IN 11 GAMES
Brittney Zerhusen (Fr., Sykesville, Md.) played in 11 games this season. She had four goals and three assists for seven points and added a ground ball. Zerhusen posted a career-high two goals against UC Davis and had a career-high two assists at Davidson.
LEVINS PLAYS IN FIVE GAMES
Megan Levins (Fr., Hatfield, Pa.) played in five of the first six games this season and had four starts. She scored six goals in the five games adding eight ground balls and draw controls and four caused turnovers. She scored on three of four eight meter attempts and had one winning goal. Levins posted a career-high three goals at St. Bonaventure and had career-highs of four ground balls and four draw controls at Notre Dame.
GYSIN HAS STARTED EVERY CAREER MATCH
Kendall Gysin started all 16 matches this season and has 32 consecutive career starts. This season, she recorded 17 ground balls, 12 draw controls and nine caused turnovers and had three goals and an assist. Her 12 draw controls tied for fourth best on the squad.
CORNICELLO SEES ACTION IN EIGHT GAMES
Rachael Cornicello (Fr., Lynbrook, N.Y.) saw action in eight of the last nine matches this season. She produced three goals and an assist and had a ground ball and a draw control on the year. She posted a career-high two goals at Northwestern and had a score in the 9-8 overtime win against California.
STERNER PLAYS IN ALL 16 GAMES
Lauren Sterner (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.) saw action in all 16 games this season and had starts at Penn State and at Northwestern. She recorded 12 ground balls, 10 draw controls and three caused turnovers on the season. Sterner scored two goals and had an assist on the year. She had a career-high three ground balls at Robert Morris and posted a career-high two draw controls against Virginia Tech and North Carolina.
HAWES CONTRIBUTES IN 13 GAMES
Rachel Hawes (So., Eldersburg, Md.) saw action in 13 games this season. She scored goals at Bucknell and at Notre Dame and had an assist against California. She had a ground ball, two draw controls and two caused turnovers on the season.
COOK PRODUCES TWO GOALS IN THREE GAMES
Jacqueline Cook (So., Pocopson, Pa.) saw action in three games this season, scoring goals in two of the games. She posted goals against UC Davis and at Bucknell. Cook recorded one draw control against UC Davis.
BURKE TIES FOR THIRD IN CAUSED TURNOVERS ON THE SEASON
Laura Burke recorded 13 caused turnovers this season, tying for third on the team. Her 23 ground balls have her tied for fourth on the squad. She had six draw controls and scored a goal against UC Davis. Burke played and started in 14 matches this season.
MAYHEW SEES ACTION IN THREE GAMES
Mallory Mayhew (So./Fr., Liverpool, N.Y.) played in three games this season. She scored a goal at Bucknell and added a ground ball in that contest.
PRUNTE SEES ACTION IN THREE GAMES
Margaret Prunte (So., Columbus, Ohio) saw action in three games this season. She recorded an assist in the UC Davis game and had a draw control at Bucknell.
BURKHART APPEARS IN TWO GAMES THIS SEASON
Lindsay Burkhart (Fr., Woodlyn, Pa.) played in two games during the 2007 season. She played against UC Davis and recorded a ground ball and a caused turnover at Bucknell.
TRAFICANT MAKES THREE APPEARANCES IN 2007
Lauren Traficant (Sr./Jr., Dublin, Ohio) saw action in three games in 2007. She played at Robert Morris and had a career-high two caused turnovers against UC Davis. She collected a ground ball at Bucknell.
MacMEEKIN SAW ACTION AT ROBERT MORRIS
Ally MacMeekin (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) played in the opening game at Robert Morris and was unable to play the rest of the season. The senior played in 23 games in her career with four starts. She had 12 ground balls, 11 draw controls and nine caused turnovers in her career.
CALDWELL HAS SEVEN STARTS ON THE SEASON
Kacie Caldwell (Jr./So., Lutherville, Md.) has started in seven of the 14 matches she has played this season. She has collected 16 ground balls this season and has four draw controls and six caused turnovers. She had a season-high four ground balls against California and equaled her career-high of two caused turnovers in that game.
OHIO STATE RANKED 19TH IN THE IWLCA POLL
Ohio State was ranked 19th in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association weekly poll released April 30. The Buckeyes were tied for 19th in the poll the previous week in making their first appearance in the poll since mid-April of 2005 when they were ranked 19th.
OHIO STATE IN THE NATIONAL STATISTICS
Ohio State has several players nationally ranked after last week’s games. Kristen Slahor ranks eighth in points per game at 4.56 per game and is third in assists at 2.81. Bethany Carey ranks 20th in caused turnovers per game at 1.75 with Danielle Gibson 24th at 1.63. Carey is tied for 23rd in ground balls with a 2.69 per game average. Kristen Gilwee is 16th in save percentage at .502 and is 32nd in goals against average at 10.75. In team statistics, the Buckeyes are 26th in caused turnovers at 8.75 per game and ranks 28th in scoring defense at 10.31.
Jessica Patane NAMED ALC CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – April 23
The American Lacrosse Conference has announced that Jessica Patane and Northwestern’s Kristen Kjellman and have both been named the ALC Co-Player of the Week following action April 16-23, 2007. Both players led their teams to 2-0 records, including a conference win on the week. Ohio State’s Patane scored the winning goal with one second left in regulation at eighth-ranked Penn State to give Ohio State a 9-8 victory in conference play. She scored a game-high four goals in the game, all coming in the second half. After trailing by three in the first half, Patane gave OSU the lead at 27:29 (6-5) and pushed the lead to two at 24:49 (7-5). After a Penn State goal cut the lead to 7-6, Patane scored at 10:48 to put the lead at two, 8-6. The Nittany Lions rallied to tie the game at eight with 4:24 left. Patane collected a missed Buckeye shot and scored the winning goal with one second left in the game. She also scored three goals in OSU’s 17-4 win at Bucknell for her eighth multi-goal game of the season.
BUCKEYES 5-1 IN OVERTIME GAMES
Ohio State, with the California win, is now 5-1 in overtime games. The Buckeyes defeated Davidson, 10-9, in 1999. In 2003, OSU won, 11-10, at Cornell and lost, in two overtimes, to Vanderbilt, 12-11. Ohio State won at Stanford, 10-9, in 2004. The Buckeyes won, 15-14, against St. Bonaventure (neutral site) and defeated California, 9-8, at home this season.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her 12th season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to OSU. Stimmel is 92-90 at Ohio State (12 years) and is 168-108 in her 18-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
GILWEE SELECTED TO ALC PRESEASON TEAM
Ohio State women’s lacrosse Kristen Gilwee has been selected to the 2007 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team by a vote of the league’s five head coaches. Gilwee played in 13 games as a freshman, starting 11. She had a 4-7 record averaging a 10.94 goals against average and a .526 saves percentage. She was named to the 2006 second team ALC All-Conference Team. Ohio State was picked to finished fifth in the Conference by a vote of the coaches. Two-time defending NCAA champion Northwestern was picked to win their third ALC title in a row.
REVIEWING OHIO STATE’S LAST GAME
Penn State 9, Ohio State 7
The 19th-ranked Ohio State (9-7, 1-3 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team fell, 9-7, to 18th-ranked Penn State (9-7, 0-4) Thursday afternoon in the opening game of the ALC Conference Tournament at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University. The Nittany Lions scored the final three goals to overcome a 7-6 Buckeye lead. Penn State’s Karen Long scored three goals and Kim Kontson had two for the Nittany Lions while Amanda Shimp posted three goals for the Buckeyes.
Penn State opened the score in the game with a goal by Lindsay Dutch at 28:58. The Buckeyes tied the game at one with a Natale Miller goal at 28:49. The Nittany Lions took a 2-1 lead when the Buckeyes could not control the ball and it resulted in an own goal at 22:50 to give Penn State a 2-1 lead. Kerri Yourick’s goal at 14:03 on a Kristen Slahor assist tied the game at 14:03 at two each. Penn State regained the lead at 12:49 with a Karen Long goal, assisted by Dutch. OSU responded with a Kelly Haggerty goal at 12:02 to tie the game at three. The Buckeyes took a 4-3 lead with a Shimp goal at 8:59. At 5:54, Penn State tied the game at four with a Kim Kontson goal. Ohio State regained the lead at 5-4 with a Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) goal, assisted by Yourick, at 1:40 to end the scoring for the half.
The second half opened with Penn State tying the game at five with a Karen Long goal at 29:24, assisted by Kontson. The Nittany Lions took a 6-5 lead at 17:51 with a Kerry Shea goal. Shimp’s second goal at 16:24 tied the game at 6-6. Her third goal at 15:02 gave Ohio State a 7-6 lead. Penn State’s Laura Lincicome tied the game at seven at 11:18 of a Lindsay Dutch assist. The Nittany Lions took an 8-7 lead at 10:32 with a Karen Long goal, assisted by Kontson. The Nittany Lions added to the lead, 9-7, with a Kontson goal, assisted by Theresa Bucci at 3:08 to end the scoring for the half giving Penn State the victory.
In goal OSU’s Kristen Gilwee took the loss while making eight saves and giving up nine goals. Penn State’s Cammie Jurkowsky had six saves in the victory while giving up seven goals.
