COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (6-4) women’s lacrosse team dropped a 12-6 decision to second-ranked North Carolina (11-2) in the second day of play at the American Lacrosse Conference/Atlantic Coast Conference Challenge played indoor in Hobula Hall on the campus of Penn State University. OSU’s Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) recorded a team-high three goals for the Buckeyes. North Carolina’s Megan Bosica recorded a game-high four goals for the Tar Heels.
North Carolina opened the scoring in the first half on a goal by Megan Bosica, assisted by Juras Christina at 23:07. The Buckeyes responded at 22:17 with a Patane goal assisted by Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.). The Tar Heels took a 2-1 lead at 21:33 with a Melissa McCarthy goal. North Carolina made it 3-1 with a Kristen Taylor goal at 19:13, assisted by McCarthy. A Keri Yourick goal at 16:03 cut the lead to one at 3-2. An eight-meter goal by Patane at 16:03 tied the game at three. McCarthy, at 11:48, put North Carolina back in the lead at 4-3. A Juras goal, assisted by McCarthy, at 4:28 ended the scoring for the half, giving North Carolina a 5-3 lead.
Bosica scored her second goal of the game at 28:07 to open the second half and lead 6-3. Ohio State rallied with two goals to trail by one at 6-5. Patane’s goal at 22:04 and Amanda Shimp’s (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) score, assisted by Yourick, at 20:27 cut the lead to one. The Tar Heels then scored six straight goals to open a 12-5 lead. The run began with a Jess Allen goal, assisted by Juras, at 14:20. Kristen Carr made it 8-5 at 14:10. Bosica scored at 13:27 with an assist from Chrissy Rude. Rude then scored at 11:46 to take the lead to 10-5. Allen, at 10:30, and Bosica, at 9:41, completed the scoring run to give North Carolina a 12-5 lead. OSU’s Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.), with an assist from Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) scored at 6:19 to make the final margin, 12-6, in the contest. Kristen Hordy took the win in goal for the Tar Heels, playing 39:35, making two saves and giving up five goals. Logan Ripley played the final 20:25 for North Carolina making two saves and giving up one goal. Ohio State’s Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) took the loss in goal while playing 50:19. She had 15 saves and gave up 12 goals. Joy DeMarco (Sr., Hudson, Ohio) closed out the game’s final 9:41 without giving up a goal while making one save.
The Buckeyes return home next week to play UC-Davis Friday at 7 p.m. and host Vanderbilt Sunday at noon.
