No. 3 Rowing Wins Twice Against No. 12 Tennessee and No. 16 Michigan – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State rowing team fought tough weather conditions and won two races against Tennessee and Michigan Saturday at Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River in Columbus, Ohio. The third-ranked Buckeye first varsity eight posted its third and fourth wins against nationally-ranked opponents this season, edging No. 12 Tennessee and No. 16 Michigan in the final race of the regatta.
In the first varsity eight race, the Ohio State crew of Claudia Wurzel (Fr., Como, Italy), Justine Mahler (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio), Zuzanna Trzcinska (So., Ilawa, Poland), Patricia Goodeman (Sr., Waterville, Ohio), Gabiele Albertaviciute (Jr., Vilnius, Lithuania), Jessica Shepherd (Sr., Richmond, Ohio), Annabelle Fago (Sr., Geissen, Germany), Briony Clare (Sr., Sydney, Australia) and coxswain Susanne Wilson (Sr., Fredericktown, Ohio) finished with a time of 6:41.19 to edge the Wolverines at 6:43.54 and the Lady Vols at 6:47.48.
The Buckeye second varsity eight of Andrea Dymalski (Jr., Bremen, Germany), Simone Haubner (Jr., Leipzig, Germany), Jackie Ruetenik (Jr., Vermillion, Ohio), Peta-Leigh Dakyns (So., Johannesburg, South Africa), Mary Sheehan (Sr., Johnstown, Pa.), Nora Franzen (Fr., Bad Honnef, Germany), Susanne Herbrand (So., Magdeburg, Germany), Mackenzie Hiltbrand (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio) and coxswain Kate Hanseman (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) placed second with a time of 6:45.44. Tennessee won the race at 6:41.26 while Michigan was third at 6:49.48.
Both the OSU first and second varsity four boats placed third in their respective races. In the first varsity four, the crew of Emily Dougher (So., Cleveland, Ohio), Johanna Burns, Alli Cutlip (So. Waverly, Ohio), Giulia Benedetti (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) and coxswain Chelsea Smith (So., Dublin, Ohio) clocked in at 8:05.60. Michigan took first at 7:50.88 and the Lady Vols were second at 7:55.51.
The second varsity eight of Ashley Korfel (Jr., Westerville, Ohio), Elizabeth LaMantia (Jr., Lima, Ohio), Lauren Lederer (Jr., Bay Village, Ohio), Katie Seighman (Sr., Mason, Ohio) and coxswain Maria Hunter (So., Columbus, Ohio) finished at 7:42.79. Tennessee clocked in at 7:28.07 to win the race and Michigan was second at 7:40.77.
In the novice races, the Buckeyes won the first novice eight race by more than seven seconds at 7:11.25. The Wolverines were second at 7:18.82 and the Lady Vols took third at 7:57.17. Ohio State was defeated by Michigan in the second novice eight race, finishing at 7:37.87 to UM’s 7:11.70.
Ohio State will next travel to East Lansing, Mich., to race conference foes Michigan and Michigan State April 14. It is the final regular-season regatta before the Buckeyes compete to defend their Big Ten championship April 28 in Madison, Wis.
