COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (6-3) women’s lacrosse team dropped a 19-12 decision to third-ranked Maryland (11-1) Friday evening in Holuba Hall on the campus of Penn State University in the American Lacrosse Conference/Atlantic Coast Conference Challenge. Ohio State’s Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Amanda Shimp (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) scored four goals each to lead the Buckeyes. Krista Pellizzi scored a game-high five goals for the Terrapins. In the second game of the Challenge, 10th-ranked Penn State defeated second-ranked North Carolina, 8-7, in overtime.
Maryland opened the game by scoring the first four goals. Kelly Kasper (29:18) and Pelizzi (28:43) opened the scoring. Katie Princiotto (21:53) and Lauren Cohen (20:28) made the lead, 4-0. Ohio State’s Shimp put the Buckeyes on the board at 16:00. Kendall Gysin (So., Noblesville, Ind.) added a goal at 14:20 to cut the lead to 4-2. The Terrapins responded with the next four goals starting with Katie Doolittle (13:26) and Pelizzi (8:06) to make it 6-2. A third goal by Pellizzi (7:10) and one from Kelly Kasper (5:26) made it 8-2. Patane posted goals at 4:47 and 1:22 to make it 8-4. Maryland closed out the half with goals by Caitlyn McFadden at 14 seconds and Amanda Spinnenweber at three seconds to end the half at 10-4.
Princiotto scored at 29:33 to open the second half for Maryland. Shimp at 26:43 and Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) (24:28) scored to cut the lead to five at 11-6. Maryland began a four-goal run at 21:25 with a score from Dana Dobbie. Pelizzi added goals at 19:49 and 19:36 and with a Casey Magor goal at 18:44 Maryland took a 15-6 lead. Patane collected her third goal of the game at 13:28 to make it 15-7. Terrapin goals by Mollie Reese (12:16) and Ali Perkins (11:24) took the Maryland lead to 10 at 17-7. A Haggerty goal cut the lead to 17-8 at 8:36. Second goals by Spinnenweber (6:21) and Doolittle (3:04) pushed the Maryland lead to 11 at 19-8. Shimp cut the lead to 10 with a score at 2:10. Patane added her fourth goal of the game at 1:20 to make it 19-10. Shimp’s fourth goal at 30 seconds cut the margin to eight at 19-11. Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) made it 19-12 with four seconds left to end the game.
Maryland’s Allie Buote had the win making four saves and giving up seven goals in 50:27. Lynne Cooper played 5:25 for the Terrapins, recording one save and giving up one goal. Sarah Sommaripa closed out the final 4:08 of the game for the Terrapins, giving up four goals. OSU’s Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) took the loss in goal, playing 60 minutes. She had 14 saves and gave up 19 goals.
Ohio State continues play in the ALC/ACC Challenge when they face second-ranked North Carolina Sunday at Noon in a match that will be played at Penn State. Penn State will then host Maryland at 3 p.m.
