COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 17th-ranked (tie) Ohio State (9-5 overall, 1-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad closes out the regular season at No. 1 Northwestern (13-1, 3-0) Friday at 5 p.m. ET. The Buckeyes and the Wildcats will meet at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex. Last week the Buckeyes won, 9-8, at No. 8 Penn State and defeated Bucknell, 17-4, on the road.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The head coach for the 17th-ranked (tie) Buckeyes is Sue Stimmel. Ohio State is 9-5 on the season and 0-2 in the American Lacrosse Conference. Last week the Buckeyes won at No. 8 Penn State, 9-8 and defeated Bucknell, 17-4, on the road. Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) has a team-high 68 points on the season with 26 goals and a team-high 42 assists. Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) ranks second with 38 points with a team-high 36 goals and two assists. Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) ranks third with 31 points with 28 goals and three assists. Bethany Carey (Jr., Eldersburg, Md.) leads the team in ground balls with 38. Danielle Gibson (Sr., Springfield, Pa.) ranks second with 28 and Laura Burke (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) is third with 23. In draw controls, Haggerty has a team-high 27 with Amanda Shimp (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) second with 24. Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) is third with 16 with Kendall Gysin (So., Noblesville, Ind.) fourth with 12. Carey has a team-high 25 caused turnovers with Gibson second with 24 and Burke, third with 13. In goal, Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) has 14 starts on the season and an 8-4 record. She has a 10.22 goals against average and a .519 save percentage. Joy DeMarco (Sr., Hudson, Ohio) has played in eight games and has a 1-1 record. She has an 6.78 goals against average and a .583 save percentage. A LOOK AT NORTHWESTERN
The head coach for the top-ranked Nittany Lions is Kelly Amonte Hiller. Northwestern is 13-1 on the season and is 3-0 in the ALC. Last week the Wildcats won 12-5 at Johns Hopkins and 15-4, at home, Monday against Rutgers. Hannah Nielsen leads the Wildcats in scoring with 73 points. She has 35 goals and a team-high 38 assists. Hilary Bowen ranks second in points with 64 with 38 goals and 26 assists. Kristen Kjellman, with 57 points is third and has a team-high 40 goals and 17 assists. Christy Finch has a team-high 35 ground balls on the season with Kjellman second with 25 and goalie Morgan Lathrop, third with 21. Kjellman leads the team in draw controls with 37. Frank is second with 29 and Ali Jacobs ranks third with 21. In caused turnovers, Finch has a team-leading 40. Kjellman is second with 16 and Franks ranks third with 15. In goal, Lathrop has started every match and has a 13-1 record this season. She has a 5.64 goals against average and a .602 saves percentage.
OHIO STATE – NORTHWESTERN SERIES
Northwestern has a 3-2 lead in the series with Ohio State. In Evanston, the Buckeyes are 2-1 against the Wildcats. Ohio State won the first two games in the series with a 16-4 win in 2002 and a 14-4 victory in 2003 in matches played in Evanston. Northwestern has won the last three contests The Wildcats, in 2004, won 9-6 in Columbus, 18-5 in 2005 in Evanston and 16-4 in 2006 in Columbus.
Jessica Patane NAMED ALC CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The American Lacrosse Conference has announced that Jessica Patane and Northwestern’s Kristen Kjellman and have both been named the ALC Co-Player of the Week following action April 16-23, 2007. Both players led their teams to 2-0 records, including a conference win on the week. Ohio State’s Patane scored the winning goal with one second left in regulation at eighth-ranked Penn State to give Ohio State a 9-8 victory in conference play. She scored a game-high four goals in the game, all coming in the second half. After trailing by three in the first half, Patane gave OSU the lead at 27:29 (6-5) and pushed the lead to two at 24:49 (7-5). After a Penn State goal cut the lead to 7-6, Patane scored at 10:48 to put the lead at two, 8-6. The Nittany Lions rallied to tie the game at eight with 4:24 left. Patane collected a missed Buckeye shot and scored the winning goal with one second left in the game. She also scored three goals in OSU’s 17-4 win at Bucknell for her eighth multi-goal game of the season.
SLAHOR SETS OSU SEASON POINTS RECORD
Kristen Slahor collected nine points last week to give her 68 on the season and break the Ohio State season mark of 61 (36 goals, 25 assists) previously held by Tracey Bounds in 2002. Slahor had two assists and a goal at Penn State and six assists at Bucknell. She already holds the Ohio State season record for assists with 42 previously held by Bounds with 25. Her six assists against Bucknell is the third best single game performance for Ohio State. She posted eight assists this season against UC-Davis to equal the Ohio State game record. In national statistics, Slahor is ranked seventh in points per game at 4.86 and is tied for second in assists per game at 3.00.
PATANE HAS NINE MULTI-GOAL GAMES THIS SEASON
Jessica Patane scored fourth goals at Penn State and three at Bucknell to give her nine multi-goal games this season. She has a team-high 36 goals this season and her 38 points ranks second on the team. Patane has 60 career goals ranking 12th on the OSU career goal list. She has moved to 14th in points with 68 (60 goals, 8 assists), passing Alorena Opitz (1996-98) with 66 (44 goals, 22 assists)
SHIMP POST KEY GOAL AT PENN STATE
Amanda Shimp scored Ohio State’s first goal against Penn State and scored OSU’s first goal of the second half to tie the game at five leading to a 9-8 victory. She added three ground balls, a caused turnover and scored one of her goals on an eight-meter attempt. Shimp scored three goals at Bucknell, including one on an eight-meter attempt. She added a caused turnover against the Bison. Shimp has 22 goals and an assist on the season ranking fourth in points with 23 for the Buckeyes. She is fourth on the team in ground balls with 22, second in draw controls with 24 and fourth in caused turnovers with 11.
MILLER POSTS TWO FIRST HALF GOALS AT PENN STATE
Natale Miller recorded back-to-back goals at Penn State in the first half to tie the score at four with 1:40 left. She added one ground ball in the contest. At Bucknell, Miller scored one goal and had a ground ball and a draw control in the contest. Miller has 13 goals and seven assists on the season. Miller has 16 draw controls ranking third on the squad. She has 17 ground balls and seven draw controls this season.
HAGGERTY POST THREE GOALS AGAINST BUCKNELL
Kelly Haggerty scored three goals at Bucknell to give her 28 on the season. She is third on the team in points with 31, including three assists. Haggerty leads the team in draw controls with 27. She has 11 ground balls and seven caused turnovers on the season.
CAREY LEADS TEAM IN GROUND BALLS AND CAUSED TURNOVERS
Bethany Carey leads Ohio State in ground balls with 38 and caused turnovers with 25. Carey had two ground balls and two caused turnovers at Penn State and recorded a ground ball, three draw controls and a goal at Bucknell. She is nationally ranked in ground balls at 31st with a 2.71 ground balls per game and is tied for 21st in caused turnover with a 1.79 per game average.
GILWEE MOVES TO THIRD IN OHIO STATE CAREER WINS
Kristen Gilwee earned wins last week at Penn State and at Bucknell to give her 12 victories in her career. She has moved to third in career wins moving past Kim Hastings (2003-06) with 11. Gilwee played the entire game against Penn State making eight saves and giving up eight goals. In the win at Bucknell, Gilwee gave up three goals while playing 18 minutes. She has started all 14 games this season and has a 10.22 goals against average, ranking 29th in the country. Gilwee has a .519 saves percentage and ranks 13th nationally. In Ohio State career statistics, she ranks fourth in saves with 227, fourth in saves percentage at .522 and seventh in goals against average at 10.54.
OHIO STATE ENTERS IWLCA POLL TIED FOR 17TH
Ohio State has been ranked in a tie for 17th in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association weekly poll. This is Ohio State’s first appearance in the poll since mid-April of 2005 when they were ranked 19th. The Buckeyes are tied with Denver (14-2) with 54 points.
OHIO STATE IN THE NATIONAL STATISTICS
Ohio State has several players nationally ranked after last week’s games. Kristen Slahor ranks seventh in points per game at 4.86 per game and is tied for second in assists at 3.00. Bethany Carey is tied for 21st in caused turnovers at 1.79 per game and is tied for 31st in ground balls at 2.71. Danielle Gibson is 24th in caused turnovers with a 1.71 average. Kristen Gilwee is 13th in save percentage at .519 and is 29th in goals against average at 10.22. In team statistics, the Buckeyes are 30th in caused turnovers at 9.14 per game and 41st in ground balls at 17.50. Ohio State ranks 17th in scoring defense at 9.64, is 27th in scoring offense at 11.86 and is 22nd in scoring margin at 2.21.
BUCKEYES NOW 5-1 IN OVERTIME GAMES
Ohio State, with the California win, is now 5-1 in overtime games. The Buckeyes defeated Davidson, 10-9, in 1999. In 2003, OSU won, 11-10, at Cornell and lost, in two overtimes, to Vanderbilt, 12-11. Ohio State won at Stanford, 10-9, in 2004. The Buckeyes won, 15-14, against St. Bonaventure (neutral site) and defeated California, 9-8, at home this season.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her 12th season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to OSU. Stimmel is 92-88 at Ohio State (12 years) and is 170-105 in her 18-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
GILWEE SELECTED TO ALC PRESEASON TEAM
Ohio State women’s lacrosse Kristen Gilwee has been selected to the 2007 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team by a vote of the league’s five head coaches. Gilwee played in 13 games as a freshman, starting 11. She had a 4-7 record averaging a 10.94 goals against average and a .526 saves percentage. She was named to the 2006 second team ALC All-Conference Team. Ohio State was picked to finished fifth in the Conference by a vote of the coaches. Two-time defending NCAA champion Northwestern was picked to win their third ALC title in a row.

REVIEWING LAST WEEK
Ohio State 9, Penn State 8
The Ohio State (8-5, 1-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team needed a last second goal by Jessica Patane to upset eighth-ranked Penn State (8-6, 0-3) Friday night at Jeffrey Field. Patane scored four goals in the game for the Buckeyes with Amanda Shimp and Natale Miller adding two each. Penn State’s Kerry Shea, Lindsay Dutch and Linsey Shea scored two goals each for the Nittany Lions.
Penn State opened the scoring with a Kerry Shea goal at 27:07. The Nittany Lions took a 2-0 lead with a Marisa Lozano goal at 24:52, assisted by Mary LeNoir. Shimp put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard with an eight-meter goal at 23:43. Linsey Shea made it 3-1 for Penn State at 19:31 on an assist from Kerry Shea. A Maria Valdersa eight-meter goal at 14:26 gave the Nittany Lions a 4-1 lead. The Buckeyes scored the next three goals to tie the game at four. A Kristen Slahor goal at 10:10 started the run. Miller posted back-to-back goals at 8:18 and 1:40 to tie the game at four. Penn State regained the lead at 5-4 with a Linsey Shea goal, assisted by Lindsay Dutch, at 1:01 to end the scoring for the half.
A Shimp goal at 29:08 tied the game at five. A Patane goal at 27:29, with a Slahor assist, gave Ohio State their first lead of the game at 6-5. Patane scored again at 24:49 to give Ohio State a 7-5 lead. Penn State cut the lead to 7-6 with a Kerry Shea goal at 21:24. Patane’s third goal of the game, assist by Slahor, at 10:48 made it 8-6. At 6:07, Lindsay Dutch scored to cut the lead to one at 8-7. A second Dutch goal, assisted by Mariel Bryan, at 4:24 tied the game at eight. The Nittany Lions controlled the draw and had two shots before a Laura Burke ground ball gave Ohio State possession. A Shimp shot with three seconds left was saved by Penn State goal Cammie Jurkowsky but Patane recovered the ball and scored the winning goal with one second left in the game for a 9-8 Buckeye victory.
Ohio State goalie Kristen Gilwee took the win in the contest making eight saves while giving up eight goals. Penn State’s Jurkowsky had six saves in the loss, giving up nine goals.
Ohio State 17, Bucknell 4
The Ohio State (9-5, 1-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team used three goals each from Jessica Patane, Amanda Shimp and Kelly Haggerty for a 17-4 victory at Bucknell (7-9) Sunday afternoon at Graham Field. Eleven Buckeyes shared in the scoring while Sarah Collins, Chelsea Peters, Bonnie Buechel and Alison Heffernan scored goals for the Bison.
Ohio State opened the scoring at 29:13 with a Shimp goal. Bucknell, with a Collins goal tied the game at one at 28:25. The Buckeyes regained the lead at 27:53 with a Keri Yourick goal assisted by Kristen Slahor. A Haggerty goal at 26:38, assisted by Slahor, made it 2-1. Patane made it 4-1 off a Slahor assist at 25:41. Haggerty’s second goal at 24:35 gave Ohio State a 5-1 lead. Bucknell stopped the Buckeye scoring run with a Peters goal, assisted by Collins at 23:57. Shimp scored her second goal of the game at 23:26 with an assist by Yourick. The Buckeyes made it 7-2 with a Bethany Carey goal at 22:31 with an assist from Laruen Sterner. Shimp’s third goal at 20:07 gave Ohio State an 8-2 lead. Patane scored at 18:54 to give Ohio State a 9-2 lead. The Buckeyes took the lead to eight at 10-2 with a Rachel Hawes goal at 12:17 with Slahor’s fourth assist. Bucknell stopped the Buckeye run with a Heffernan goal at 11:56 with an assist by Peters making it 11-3. Ohio State’s Libby Graf made the lead eight at 11-3 at 11:30. Haggerty scored her third goal at 10:52, on an eight-meter attempt. Natale Miller took the Ohio State lead to 10 at 13-3 with a goal at 7:58. Brittney Zerhusen added a Buckeye goal at 2:09, assisted by Slahor, to make it 14-3. Patane’s third goal of the game, assist by Slahor’s sixth assist, came as time expired in the first half to give the Buckeyes a 15-3 lead.
Ohio State scored twice in the second half to take the lead to 14. Buckeye goals by Jacqueline Cook at 26:55 and Mallory Mayhew at 25:00 gave Ohio State a 17-3 lead. The Bison closed out the scoring with a Buechel goal at 12:34 with a Collins assist for the final 17-4 score.
In goal, Kristen Gilwee played 18:04 for the win giving up three goals. Joy DeMarco finished out the game, playing 41:56, making seven saves while giving up one goal. For Bucknell, Katie Hartsock took the loss playing the entire game. She had eight saves while giving up 17 goals.
