COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s lacrosse freshman Mario Ventiquattro has been named the Great Western Lacrosse League Player of the Week for the week of April 16-22, the conference announced Monday. The rookie helped the Buckeyes to two league road wins last weekend, as Ohio State won at Air Force 10-6 and at Denver 10-9 in overtime to remain undefeated in the GWLL.
Ventiquattro, from Carthage, N.Y. (Carthage Central), had four goals and two assists for six points in the two wins combined. Against the Air Force Falcons Friday, Ventiquattro had a goal and an assist, including the first helper of his Buckeye career. He had his first hat trick and added an assist for his first four-point game for the Scarlet and Gray in Ohio State’s overtime win at Denver Sunday, including the overtime winner with 11 seconds left on the clock in the OT period.
Ventiquattro, who has played in the last five games for the Buckeyes and started the last three, is on a four-game scoring streak. He has 7-2-9 totals over the stretch and on the season, with multiple points in each of the last three games.
Ventiquattro is the fourth Buckeye to earn league player of the week honors this year, joining Kevin Buchanan (Feb. 28), Jason Lutz (March 14) and Joel Dalgarno (April 4).
The No. 20 Buckeyes (8-4, 4-0 GWLL), on a three-game winning streak, return home to face league foe No. 10 Notre Dame at noon Saturday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. A Buckeye victory over the Irish would give Ohio State the outright GWLL title and the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
