Women’s Lacrosse late rally falls short in 10-9 loss to No. 15 Vanderbilt – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (7-5, 0-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team had a late rally fall short in a 10-9 loss to 15th-ranked Vanderbilt (9-4, 3-1) Sunday afternoon in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes trailed 10-7 before scoring two goals in the final three minutes, the last with 47 seconds left, but would get no closer. Ohio State’s Amanda Ship (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) scored a team-high three goals for the Buckeyes while Margie Curran and Cara Giordano each recorded three goals for Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt opened the first half with a goal by Giordano at 25:47. OSU’s Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) tied the game at one on an eight-meter goal at 22:31. The Buckeyes took a 2-1 lead at 21:34 by Shimp on an eight-meter attempt. The Commodores responded with the next three goals starting at 18:39 by Sara Downing to tie the game at two. Giordano gave Vanderbilt a 3-2 lead at 12:08 and Kendall Thrift made it 4-2 with a goal at 9:49. Ohio State’s Keri Yourick (So., Castle Rock, Colo.) cut the lead to one at 4-3 with a goal at 8:42 to end the scoring for the half.
The Commodores opened the second half with four straight goals to take the lead to 8-3. The run began with a Margie Curran goal at 28:36, assisted by Thrift. Giordano scored her third goal of the game at 28:17 to make the lead, 6-3. Curren, at 27:02, scored with a Thrift assist. Thrift then scored at 24:55 on a Sara Downing assist to complete the run. Shimp’s goal at 24:03 started a three-goal run by the Buckeyes. Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) made it 8-5 with a goal, assisted by Miller, at 21:29. Ohio State cut the lead to two at 8-6 with Yourick’s second goal at 21:08 with an assist from Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.). Vanderbilt took the lead to three at 9-6 with Curran’s third goal at 18:56 on an eight meter attempt. A Lauren Sterner (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.) goal for the Buckeyes at 12:03, on an eight-meter attempt, cut the margin to 9-7. Vanderbilt took the lead to three at 10-7 with an Ashley Paschall goal at 11:10 on a Jennifer Tapscott assist. The Buckeyes cut the lead to two at 10-8 on a Bethany Carey (Jr., Eldersburg, Md.) goal at 2:26. The Commodores controlled the draw but a Vanderbilt turnover at 1:25 gave Ohio State the ball leading to a Shimp goal, her third, with 47 seconds left in the game. The draw was controlled by Vanderbilt but each squad had a turnover to allow the Commodores to run out the final 25 seconds of the game to win, 10-9. Ohio State’s Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) took the loss in goal for the Buckeyes making 17 saves and giving up 10 goals. Vanderbilt’s Brooke Shinaberry had five saves in the victory while giving up nine goals.
Ohio State returns to the road next week when they travel to face eighth-ranked Penn State Friday at 7 p.m. and then plays at Bucknell Sunday at 1 p.m.
