Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Duquesne, 13-8 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (2-0) women’s lacrosse team pulled away in the second half for a 13-8 win over Duquesne (2-2) Wednesday afternoon at the North Turf Field. OSU’s Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) each scored four goals for the Buckeyes with Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) adding two. Duquesne’s Ashley Wood recorded three goals and Kathleen McNish added two for the Dukes.
Ohio State opened the scoring with a Patane goal assisted by Amanda Shimp at 28:45. Duquesne responded at 26:42 with a McNish goal assisted by Sarah Carson. OSU’s Miller made it 2-1 at 24:28 with a goal. The Dukes tied the game at two with a Wood goal at 21:56 and took a 3-2 lead at 15:16 on a Wood goal. Ohio State tied the game at three with a Haggerty goal at 8:18, assisted by Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.). A Sarah Cates goal at 5:18, assisted by McNish, gave Duquesne a 4-3 lead going into halftime.
Duquesne opened the second half with Wood’s third goal at 29:01 on a McNish assist to take a two goal (5-3) lead. Two goals by Patane, the first at 28:06 and the second at 23:25 on a Slahor assist tied the game at five. Ohio State took a 6-5 lead with a Haggerty goal, assist by Slahor at 21:37. Duquesne, with a Stacie Pollock, goal tied the game at six at 19:37. The Buckeyes took the lead back at 18:48 with a Keri Yourick (So., Castle Rock, Colo.) goal. Patane scored her fourth goal of the game at 18:15 on a Slahor assist and a Miller goal at 14:36 gave the Buckeyes a 9-6 lead. The Dukes, with a McNish goal at 14:17, assisted by Janna Faulkner, stopped the Buckeye run at 9-7. Ohio State added four goals over the next five minutes to take a 13-7 lead. The run began with a Haggerty goal at 9:44, assisted by Miller. Slahor then scored at 7:34 to make the lead, 11-7. Haggerty added her fourth goal of the game at 6:11 and Amanda Shimp (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) scored OSU’s 13th goal of the game at 4:46. Duquesne ended the scoring with a Becky Green goal at 3:28 for the final 13-8 margin to Ohio State.
In goal for Ohio State, Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) had eight saves while giving up eight goals and playing the entire game. Caitlin Carducci took the loss for Duquesne, giving up 13 goals and making three saves in 60 minutes.
The Buckeyes will return to the North Turf Field Sunday when they face 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins (3-1) at 1 p.m.
