COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (1-0) women’s lacrosse squad returns to action with home games against Duquesne (2-1) and No. 10 Johns Hopkins (2-1). The Buckeyes will face the Dukes in Ohio State’s home opener Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. The Buckeyes then face the Blue Jays Sunday at 2 p.m. in an American Lacrosse Conference game. Ohio State opened the season with a 15-3 road victory over Robert Morris Feb. 23.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The head coach for the Buckeyes is Sue Stimmel. Ohio State (1-0) opened the season with a 15-3 victory at Robert Morris. Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) scored a team-high seven points in the game with four goals and three assists. Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) contributed three points with two goals and an assist with Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) adding with three points with a goal and two assists. Amanda Shimp (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) and Keri Yourick (So., Castle Rock, Colo.) each had two goals in the victory. In goal, Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) collected the win making six saves and giving up three goals in 53:40. Joy DeMarco (Sr., Hudson, Ohio) played a scoreless 6:20 in goal to close out the game. Bethany Carey (Jr., Eldersburg, Md.) had a team-high six ground balls with Laura Burke (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) adding four and Haggerty, Lauren Sterner (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.) and Danielle Gibson (Sr., Springfield, Pa.) contributing three each. Kendall Gysin (So., Noblesville, Ind.) leads the team with two draw controls while Miller, Shimp and Carey share team-high honors with two caused turnovers each. A LOOK AT DUQUESNE
The head coach for the Dukes is Michael Scerbo. Duquesne has a 2-1 record on the season. Last week, the Dukes defeated Monmouth, 20-15, and lost to 19th-ranked Vanderbilt, 19-9 in home contests. Leading Duquesne in points this season is Kathleen McNish with 23. She has team-highs of 11 goals and 12 assists. Meghan Frederick ranks second with 13 points on 10 goals and three assists with Janna Faulkner third with eight (six goals and two assists). In ground balls, Frederick has a team-high seven with Stacie Pollock second with six. Faulkner, Julie Feltovich, Mollie Montgomery and Tyneisha Harris are tied for third with five each. Pollock leads the team in draw controls with nine while Sarah Cates ranking second with eight and Faulkner third with six. Cates has a team-high five caused turnovers for the Dukes. Tied for second with four each are Courtney Tamasitis, Pollock, Meg Cloutman and Harris. In goal, Caitlin Carducci has a 2-1 record on the season and has a 13.60 goals against average and a .392 saves percentage. Meghan Holleran has played in goal in two games with a 12.49 goals against average and a .182 saves percentage.
OHIO STATE – DUQUESNE SERIES
Ohio State has a 7-3 lead in the series with Duquesne. The Buckeyes are 4-1 against the Dukes in home games. Last season Duquesne won, 7-6, in Pittsburgh. Kristen Slahor scored a team-high two goals in the game with Kristen Gilwee taking the loss in goal.
A LOOK AT JOHNS HOPKINS
The head coach for the 10th-ranked Blue Jays is Janine Tucker. Johns Hopkins has a 2-1 record prior to a Tuesday game with Mount Saint Mary. The Blue Jays opened the season with home wins over George Washington, 13-7 and George Mason, 9-7. Last week Johns Hopkins lost at Princeton, 11-10, in overtime. Prior to Tuesday’s game with Mount Saint Mary, Mary Key had a team-high 21 points with team-highs of 11 goals and 10 assists. Sam Schrum is second on the team with seven points with four goals and three assists while Kadie Stamper ranks third with six points (six goals). Key leads the team in ground balls with eight with Schrum, Sarah Gallion and Cherie Michaud tied for second with seven each. Key tops the squad in draw controls with eight. Schrum ranks second with seven and Steph Janice is third with four. In caused turnovers, Stampler is the team leader with five. Tied for second with three each are Key, Gallion, Michaud and Katie Dumais. In goal, Amelia Harris has started all three games and has a 2-1 record. Harris has a 7.96 goals against average and a .490 saves percentage.
OHIO STATE – JOHNS HOPKINS SERIES
Johns Hopkins leads the series with Ohio State, 3-2. The Buckeyes have won both home games including a 12-9 win in 2005. Last season the fourth-ranked Blue Jays defeated Ohio State, 17-7. KC Carter scored a team-high three goals for the Buckeyes with Kristen Slahor adding a goal and an assist. Kristen Gilwee took the loss in goal for Ohio State.
SLAHOR SETS CAREER-HIGHS AGAINST ROBERT MORRIS
Kristen Slahor opened the 2007 season with career-highs of seven points and four goals against Robert Morris. Slahor added three assists and a ground ball in the game. Her previous high in goals was two, seven times, the last in 2006 at Vanderbilt. Slahor’s previous high in points was six (one goal and five assists) at Notre Dame in 2005.
SLAHOR MOVES TO EIGHTH IN OHIO STATE CAREER ASSISTS
Kristen Slahor, with her three assists against Robert Morris, now ranks eighth on the Ohio State career list with 36. She moved past Alexia Vogler (2000-03) with 34. She needs four assists to pass seventh-ranked Megan Mirick (1999-02) with 39. Slahor, with 62 career points, ranks 14th on the Ohio State career points list with 26 goals and 36 assists.
MILLER NETS A GOAL AND TWO ASSISTS AT ROBERT MORRIS
Natale Miller scored a goal and two assists in the Robert Morris game. She added two ground balls, a draw control and two caused turnovers in the game. Her two assists and two caused turnovers equaled her career highs. Previously she had two assists in 2005 against Virginia Tech and had recorded two caused turnovers in two previous games.
HAGGERTY STARTS CAREER OFF WITH THREE-POINT GAME
Kelly Haggerty had three points against Robert Morris in her first game as a Buckeye. She had two goals and an assist in the game, adding three ground balls and a caused turnover.
SHIMP SCORES TWICE AT ROBERT MORRIS
Amanda Shimp scored two goals at Robert Morris to equal her career high for the third time. She added a career-high two caused turnovers and a ground ball and a caused turnover in the contest.
YOURICK REPEATS TWO GOAL PERFORMANCE AT ROBERT MORRIS
Keri Yourick, for the second time in two years, recorded two goals against Robert Morris to equal her career high. She posted two goals against Robert Morris in 2006. Yourick added a ground ball and a caused turnover in the game.
CAREY POSTS CAREER-HIGHS AT ROBERT MORRIS
Bethany Carey recorded career-highs of six ground balls and two caused turnovers at Robert Morris. Her previous high in ground balls was four against Penn State in 2006 and she had previously had five games with a caused turnover. She added a goal and one draw control in the contest.
GILWEE EARNS HER FIFTH CAREER VICTORY
Kristen Gilwee picked up the win at Robert Morris for her fifth career victory. She is now sixth in Ohio State career wins after being tied with Sheila Rupp (1996) with four. Gilwee played 53:40 against Robert Morris, giving up three goals and making six saves.
FIVE FRESHMEN SEE ACTION AGAINST ROBERT MORRIS
Ohio State had five freshmen play in the Robert Morris game. Three freshmen scored in the game with Kelly Haggerty collecting two goals and an assist. Lauren Sterner and Megan Levins (Fr., Hatfield, Pa.) each scored a goal against Robert Morris. Also seeing action were Laura Burke with four ground balls and a caused turnover and Brittney Zerhusen (Fr., Sykesville, Md.) who had two shots in the game.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her 12th season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to OSU. Stimmel is 84-83 at Ohio State (12 years) and is 160-101 in her 17-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
GILWEE SELECTED TO ALC PRESEASON TEAM
Ohio State women’s lacrosse Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) has been selected to the 2007 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team by a vote of the league’s five head coaches. Gilwee played in 13 games as a freshman, starting 11. She had a 4-7 record averaging a 10.94 goals against average and a .526 saves percentage. She was named to the 2006 second team ALC All-Conference Team. Ohio State was picked to finished fifth in the Conference by a vote of the coaches. Two-time defending NCAA champion Northwestern was picked to win their third ALC title in a row.
