COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (4-2 overall, 0-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad will host two non-conference matches this week playing Virginia Tech (4-8) Friday and California (5-1) Sunday. The Buckeyes will host Hokies Friday at 7 p.m. and the Golden Bears Sunday at Noon in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Last week on the road, Ohio State lost 16-9 to 12-ranked Notre Dame and defeated St. Bonaventure, 15-14, in overtime.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The head coach for the Buckeyes is Sue Stimmel. Ohio State is 4-2 on the season and 0-1 in the American Lacrosse Conference. Last week in road games, the Buckeyes lost at 12th-ranked Notre Dame, 16-9 and defeated St. Bonaventure, 15-14, in overtime. Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) has a team-high 33 points on the season with team-highs of 16 goals and 17 assists. Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) has 17 points with a 15 goals and two assists. Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) ranks third with 11 points (11 goals) and Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) is fourth with 10 points with seven goals and three assists. Bethany Carey (Jr., Eldersburg, Md.) leads the team in ground balls with 18. Laura Burke (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) ranks second with 15 and Danielle Gibson (Sr., Springfield, Pa.) is third with 11. In draw controls, Amanda Shimp (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) leads the team with 12. Miller ranks second with 11 and Haggerty is third with nine. Carey has a team-high 15 caused turnovers with Burke and Gibson tied for second with nine each. In goal, Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) has six starts on the season and a 3-1 record. She has a 9.39 goals against average and a .516 saves percentage. Joy DeMarco (Sr., Hudson, Ohio) has played in four games and has a 1-1 record. She is averaging 11.49 goals against and has a .516 saves percentage. A LOOK AT VIRGINIA TECH
The head coach for the Hokies is Katrina Silva. Virginia Tech is 4-8 on the season. Last week the Hokies lost, 16-7, at Duke and 12-10 in overtime to Stanford at home. On Tuesday, Virginia Tech lost 16-7 at Delaware. Kady McBrearty has a team-high 30 points with team-highs of 21 goals and nine assists. Jenna Reich is second in points with 26 having 19 goals and seven assists. Britt Faulkner is third with 25 points on 19 goals and six assists and Lindsay Pieper ranks fourth with 23 points with 18 goals and five assists. Goalie Kari Morrison has a team-high 38 ground balls with Christina Griel second with 26. Pieper is third with 19 and McBrearty, fourth with 18. In draw controls, Pieper has a team-high 24. Griel ranks second with 18 and McBrearty, Reich and Rachel Culp are tied for third with 14 each. Pieper leads the team in caused turnovers with 16. Bryana Keenan ranks second with 13 with Griel third with 12. In goal, Morrison has 12 starts with a 4-8 record. She has a 13.94 goals against average and a .436 saves percentage. Megan Waters has played in four games and has a 10.07 goals against average and a .222 saves percentage.
OHIO STATE – VIRGINIA TECH SERIES
Virginia Tech has an 8-3 lead in the series with Ohio State. In Columbus, the Buckeyes have a 3-2 edge over the Hokies winning the last three games played in Columbus. Last season, Virginia Tech won 17-4 in Blacksburg. Jessica Patane, KC Carter, Kelly Kremer and Lindsay Weiner scored goals for the Buckeyes with Joy DeMarco taking the loss in goal.
A LOOK AT CALIFORNIA
The head coach for the Golden Bears is Jill Malko. California has a 5-1 record prior to a Wednesday game at Vanderbilt. The Bears have been not played since March 15 when they defeated William and Mary, 11-10 at home. On March 13, California, at home, defeated Colgate, 16-7. Leading the Golden Bears in scoring with 24 points is Laura Cavallo with 18 goals and six assists. Danni Zuralow and Liz Reifsnyder are tied for second in points with 17. Zuralow has 11 goals and six assists while Reifsnyder has 10 goals and seven assists. Mary Downs has a team-high 12 ground balls with Zuralow, Madeleine Dale and Hilary Lynch tied for second with 11. Cavallo leads the team with 16 draw controls. Dale ranks second with 15 and Downs is third with 12. Zurlow has a team-high eight caused turnovers to lead the squad. Alex Tickner ranks second with five and Cavallo, Dale and Downs are tied for third with four. In goal, Hilary Lynch has six starts and a 5-1 record. She has a 7.47 goals against average and a .576 saves percentage. Morgan Dyson has played in four games and has an 11.53 goals against average and a .571 saves percentage.
OHIO STATE – CALIFORNIA SERIES
California has a 3-1 advantage in the series with Ohio State. In Columbus, each team has won a game with the Buckeyes winning in 2003 (12-6) and the Golden Bears winning in 2005 (11-9). California has won the last three meetings including a 12-11 victory last season at Berkeley. OSU’s KC Carter had a game-high four goals with Kristen Slahor scoring twice. Jessica Patane, Natale Miller, Kelly Kremer, Bethany Carey and Kendall Gysin each scored a goal against the Golden Bears. Kim Hastings took the loss in goal.
SLAHOR HAS A 10-POINT WEEK
Kristen Slahor had a 10-point week after scoring three goals at Notre Dame and three goals and four assists against St. Bonaventure. She added a ground ball and a draw control against the Bonnies. Slahor has 33 points on the season to lead Ohio State. She has team-highs of 16 goals and 17 assists. Slahor has scored at least one goal in all six games this season and had a seven game scoring streak dating back to 2006.
SLAHOR NOW TIED FOR THIRD IN OSU CAREER ASSISTS
Kristen Slahor, with four assists against St. Bonaventure, has 50 in her career and has tied for third on the Ohio State career assists list. She moved past Mara Simpson (1996-99) with 49 and is now tied with Laurie Rybak (1996-99). Slahor needs two assists to past second-ranked Celeste Cianfrani (1998-01) with 51. Her 10 points (six goals, four assists) last week gives her 88 (38 goals, 50 assists) for her career and has her ranked 11th on the OSU career points list.
LEVINS SCORES GAME WINNER AGAINST ST. BONAVENTURE
Megan Levins (Fr., Hatfield, Pa.) scored a career-high three goals in the St. Bonaventure game including the game winner, in overtime. She scored an early goal in the game to give the Buckeyes a 5-0 lead. Her second goal, an eight-meter attempt, tied the game at 13-all for Ohio State. Levins added a draw control and two caused turnovers in the game. Against Notre Dame, she recorded one goal and career-highs of four ground balls and four draw controls. Levins has six goals on the season, scoring on three of four eight-meter attempts and collecting eight ground balls, eight draw controls and four caused turnovers.
HAGGERTY HAS THIRD FOUR-POINT GAME THIS SEASON
Kelly Haggerty posted four points against St. Bonaventure for her third, four-point game of the season. She had three goals and an assist against the Bonnies adding a draw control and a caused turnover. One of her three goals came on an eight-meter attempt. At Notre Dame, Haggerty scored one goal in the contest. She has now scored one or more goals in all six games this season and ranks second on the team in goals (15) and points (17).
CAREY POSTS A CAREER-HIGH FOUR CAUSED TURNOVERS TWICE LAST WEEK
Bethany Carey set a career-high of four caused turnovers at Notre Dame and then equaled it against St. Bonaventure. She added two ground balls in the Notre Dame game and had four against St. Bonaventure. Carey leads the Buckeyes in both ground balls (18) and caused turnovers (15).
YOURICK HAS TWO GOALS AGAINST ST. BONAVENTURE
Keri Yourick scored two goals and added an assist in the St. Bonaventure game. It was her third, two-goal game of the season and fourth of her career. Her three points in the game equaled her season-high set against Johns Hopkins.
BURKE HAS A CAREER-HIGH FIVE GROUND BALLS AT NOTRE DAME
Laura Burke posted career-highs of five ground balls and three caused turnovers in the Notre Dame game. She added a draw control in the contest. Against St. Bonaventure, she had a ground ball and two caused turnovers. Burke ranks second on the team in ground balls with 15 and is tied for second in caused turnovers with nine.
SHIMP HAS A CAREER-HIGH FOUR DRAW CONTROLS AT NOTRE DAME
Amanda Shimp collected a career-high four draw controls in the Notre Dame game. Her previous high was three against Rutgers in 2006. Shimp scored a goal against the Fighting Irish and added two ground balls. Against St. Bonaventure, Shimp had a ground ball, two draw controls and equaled her career-high of two caused turnovers. She has a team-high 12 draw controls on the season.
GIBSON HAS A SEASON-HIGH THREE CAUSED TURNOVERS AT NOTRE DAME
Danielle Gibson had a season-high three caused turnovers at Notre Dame and added three ground balls against the Fighting Irish. She produced a caused turnover against St. Bonaventure. On the season, Gibson is third in ground balls with 11 and is tied for second in caused turnovers with nine and has started all six games.
MILLER HAS A KEY DRAW CONTROL AGAINST ST. BONAVENTURE
Natale Miller recorded a career-high five draw controls in the St. Bonaventure game but none were bigger than the one she collected that resulted in the Buckeyes scoring to tie the game at 14 and send the contest into overtime. Miller added two goals in the game and had one ground ball. At Notre Dame, she scored a goal and collected one ground ball and two draw controls. Miller ranks second on the team in draw controls with 11 on the season.
MILLER NOW SIXTH IN OHIO STATE CAREER DRAW CONTROLS
Natale Miller, with seven draw controls last week, now has 52 for her career and has moved to sixth on the Ohio State career draw controls list. She had been tied for 10th with Brandie Williams (2002-05) with 45. Miller passed Caroline Weatherill (2001-04), Alexia Vogler (2000-03) and Ashley Evans (2002-05) who are tied with 51. Last week Miller had two draw controls at Notre Dame and a career-high five against St. Bonaventure.
HAWES SCORES FIRST CAREER GOAL
Rachel Hawes scored her first career goal at Notre Dame last week. She added a ground ball and a draw control in the contest. Hawes has seen action in four games this season.
GYSIN COLLECTS A CAREER-HIGH THREE GROUND BALLS AGAINST ST. BONAVENTURE
Kendall Gysin recorded a career-high three ground balls in the St. Bonaventure game. Her previous high was two in seven games. Gysin added two ground balls and a caused turnover against the Bonnies. The two ground balls ties her career-high for the sixth time. Gysin, a starter in all six games this season, had two ground balls and a caused turnover in the Notre Dame game.
PATANE HAS TWO GOALS AGAINST THE BONNIES
Jessica Patane scored two goals against St. Bonaventure and one at Notre Dame to five her 11 on the season, ranking third on the team in both goals and points. Patane added one ground ball, two draw controls and a caused turnover against the Bonnies. Her two draw controls equals her career high set against Duquesne. At Notre Dame, Patane scored a goal and had one ground ball and a draw control.
DeMARCO SECURES THE WIN AGAINST ST. BONAVENTURE
Joy DeMarco picked up her first win of the season in the overtime victory against St. Bonaventure. She played 36 minutes, starting the second half and overtime. DeMarco gave up seven goals in the second half and had eight saves. She held the Bonnies scoreless in overtime and stopped an eight-meter attempt with six seconds left in overtime to secure the win. DeMarco is 1-1 on the season, playing in four games with no starts. She has an 11.49 goals against average and a .516 saves percentage.
GILWEE TIES FOR FIFTH IN OHIO STATE CAREER SAVES
Kristen Gilwee collected 17 saves last week to give her 159 for her career and move her into a tie for fifth on the Ohio State career saves list. She is tied with Jamie Bauer (1997-99). Next on the list is No. 4 Nicole Morris (1997) with 174. Gilwee had 10 saves and gave up 13 goals at Notre Dame in the loss while playing 54 minutes. She added two ground balls and a caused turnover against the Fighting Irish. Against St. Bonaventure, she played the first 30 minutes of the game making seven saves and giving up seven goals. She added a ground ball in the contest. Gilwee has started all six games this season and has a 3-1 record. She has a 9.39 goals against average and a .516 saves percentage. Her three wins give her seven (7-8) for her career, ranking fourth in career win for Ohio State.
OHIO STATE IN THE NATIONAL STATISTICS
Ohio State has several players nationally ranked after last week’s games. Kristen Slahor ranks fifth in points per game at 5.50 per game and is sixth in assists at 2.83. Bethany Carey ranks fifth in caused turnovers at 2.50 per game and is 19th in ground balls at 3.00. Goalie Kristen Gilwee is 16th in save percentage at .516 and 20th at 9.38 in goals against average. In team statistics, the Buckeyes are 20th in scoring offense with a 12.33 average. They are tied for 26th in scoring defense at 10.00. OSU is tied for 20th in scoring margin at 2.33. In caused turnovers, the Buckeyes are ranked 12th at 10.50 and are 26th in ground balls at 19.33.
BUCKEYES NOW 4-1 IN OVERTIME GAMES
Ohio State, with the St. Bonaventure win, is now 4-1 in overtime games. The Buckeyes defeated Davidson, 10-9, in 1999. In 2003, OSU won, 11-10, at Cornell and lost, in two overtimes, to Vanderbilt, 12-11. Ohio State won at Stanford, 10-9, in 2004. The Buckeyes, 15-14, win against St. Bonaventure was played in Aldred, N.Y.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her 12th season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to OSU. Stimmel is 87-85 at Ohio State (12 years) and is 165-103 in her 18-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
GILWEE SELECTED TO ALC PRESEASON TEAM
Ohio State women’s lacrosse Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) has been selected to the 2007 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team by a vote of the league’s five head coaches. Gilwee played in 13 games as a freshman, starting 11. She had a 4-7 record averaging a 10.94 goals against average and a .526 saves percentage. She was named to the 2006 second team ALC All-Conference Team. Ohio State was picked to finished fifth in the Conference by a vote of the coaches. Two-time defending NCAA champion Northwestern was picked to win their third ALC title in a row.
NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE
Ohio State travels to Penn State next week to play in the ALC/ACC Challenge hosted by the 10th-ranked Nittany Lions. The Buckeyes will play third-ranked Maryland Friday at 5 p.m. with host Penn State facing second-ranked North Carolina at 7 p.m. Ohio State will play North Carolina Sunday at Noon with Penn State hosting Maryland at 3 p.m.

The Ohio State (3-2, 0-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team lost a 16-9 decision to 12th-ranked Notre Dame (6-2) in a game played indoors at the Loftus Sports Center on the Notre Dame campus. Ohio State’s Kristen Slahor scored a team-high three goals in the contest. Notre Dame’s Lena Zentgraf and Caitlin McKinney shared team-high honors with three goals each.
Notre Dame opened the game by scoring the first five goals of the game. The scoring began with a Zentgraf goal at 29:04, assisted by Kaki Orr. McKinney scored at 26:49 to make it 2-0. Jane Stoeckert scored at 25:14, assisted by Meghan Murphy. Jillian Byers made it 4-0 with a goal at 23:55. Zentgraf’s second goal at 17:54, assisted by Stoeckert, took the lead to 5-0. Ohio State’s Slahor put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard at 13:31. The Fighting Irish closed out the first half by scoring four goals to lead 9-1. McKinney began the run with a goal at 7:16. Mary Carpenter scored on an eight meter attempt at 6:16 to make the score, 7-1. Byers scored her second goal of the game at 2:23 and a Murphy goal at 0:03 completed the run.
Ohio State cut the Notre Dame lead to four by scoring four goals to open the second half. Megan Levins opened the run at 28:53. A Jessica Patane goal made it 9-3 at 25:23. OSU goals by Amanda Shimp (25:07) and Rachel Hawes (So., Eldersburg, Md.) (22:24) cut the margin to four at 9-5. Notre Dame’s Alicia Billings made it 10-5 with a goal at 19:19, assisted by Murphy. Zentgraf’s third goal, assisted by Billings, at 18:38 made the lead six at 11-5. Slahor, on an eight meter attempt, scored at 16:47 to cut the lead to five (11-6). Notre Name posted the next four goals starting with Billings score at 15:40, assisted by Stoeckert. Carpenter made it 13-6 at 13:14, assisted by Heather Ferguson. Stoeckert’s second goal at 12:37 and McKinney’s third goal at 11:40, assisted by Ferguson, took the lead to nine at 15-6. Ohio State cut the lead to seven (15-8) with goals by Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) at 9:36 and Natale Miller at 4:52. The Fighting Irish made it 16-8 with a Kaki Orr goal at 3:03, assisted by Murphy. Ohio State closed out the scoring with Slahor’s third goal of the game at 0:52 to give Notre Dame a 16-9 win.
In goal, Notre Dame’s Erin Goodman had the win (6-2), making two saves while giving up nine goals. Ohio State’s Kristen Gilwee took the loss (3-1) while playing 54 minutes. She had 10 saves while giving up 13 goals. Joy DeMarco played six minutes in the game, giving up three goals.
Ohio State 15, St. Bonaventure 14 (OT)
The Ohio State (4-2, 0-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team needed a Megan Levins’ overtime goal to secure a 15-14 victory over St. Bonaventure (1-4) in a game played Sunday at Merrill Field on the campus of Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y. OSU’s Kristen Slahor, Kelly Haggerty and Levins each scored three goals against the Bonnies with Slahor adding a game-high four assists. Kimberly Ross scored a team-high four goals for St. Bonaventure.
Ohio State opened the first half with a 5-0 lead. Jessica Patane opened the scoring at 28:19 with Natale Miller making it 2-0 at 27:08. Patane’s second goal at 26:06 was assisted by Slahor. Buckeye goals by Keri Yourick (24:24), assisted by Slahor, and Levins (23:58), made it a 5-0 Ohio State lead. St. Bonaventure, with goals by Kimberly Ross (22:41), Katelyn Faas (21:57) and Brenna Houghton (20:32), assisted by Faas, cut the OSU lead to 5-3. OSU’s Slahor’s scored at 19:56 with an assist by Haggerty. A Haggerty eight-meter goal at 15:59 and a Yourick goal pushed the Buckeyes lead to five at 8-3. St. Bonaventure, with a Molly Hastrich goal, at 13:02 made it 8-4. Buckeye goals by Slahor (11:50) and by Haggerty, assisted by Slahor, at 2:49 gave Ohio State a 10-4 lead. The Bonnies closed out the half with a three-goal run starting with a Ross goal at 2:14. Goals by Faas (0:54) and Stephanie Jordan (0:17) completed the run to cut the Ohio State lead to three at 10-7. Brenna Houhgton assisted all three goals to end the half.
St. Bonaventure stretched their scoring run to five goals opening the second half with a Jordan goal at 27:57, assisted by Houghton. Patty Nessle scored to cut the Buckeye lead to one at 10-9 with a Faas assist. The Buckeyes took the lead to three (12-9) when goals by Haggerty (26:42), assisted by Slahor, and Slahor’s third goal (23:47) made it 12-9. Nicole Mahoney scored an eight-meter goal at 18:12 and a third goal by Ross at 18:02 cut the Ohio State lead to one at 12-11. St. Bonaventure tied the game at 12 with a Lynsey Wagner goal at 15:38, assisted by Faas. The Bonnies took their first lead of the game at 9:52 when Ross scored her fourth goal of the game. The Buckeyes evened the score at 13 at 8:03 with a Levins’ eight-meter goal. A Houghton goal at 6:33 gave St. Bonaventure a 14-13 lead. The Buckeyes controlled the following draw and tied the game at 14 with a Miller goal at 5:24. Regulation play closed with the score tied, 14-14.
Ohio State controlled the draw in the first half of the overtime period and scored at 2:43 on a Levins’ goal, assisted by Yourick, to take a 15-14 lead. In the second half of the first overtime period, St. Bonaventure was awarded an eight-meter attempt with six seconds left in the overtime. Buckeye goalie Joy DeMarco stopped the shot to secure the victory.
DeMarco had the win in goal for Ohio State, playing the final 36 minutes. She posted eight saves while giving up seven goals. Kristen Gilwee had the start, playing the first 30 minutes, collecting seven saves and giving up seven goals. Eboni Preson took the loss in goal for St. Bonaventure, making 10 saves and giving up 15 goals.
