COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (3-2, 0-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team lost a 16-9 decision to 12th-ranked Notre Dame (6-2) in a game played indoors at the Loftus Sports Center on the Notre Dame campus. Ohio State’s Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) scored a team-high three goals in the contest. Notre Dame’s Lena Zentgraf and Caitlin McKinney shared team-high honors with three goals each.
Notre Dame opened the game by scoring the first five goals of the game. The scoring began with a Zentgraf goal at 29:04, assisted by Kaki Orr. McKinney scored at 26:49 to make it 2-0. Jane Stoeckert scored at 25:14, assisted by Meghan Murphy. Jillian Byers made it 4-0 with a goal at 23:55. Zentgraf’s second goal at 17:54, assisted by Stoeckert, took the lead to 5-0. Ohio State’s Slahor put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard at 13:31. The Fighting Irish closed out the first half by scoring four goals to lead 9-1. McKinney began the run with a goal at 7:16. Mary Carpenter scored on an eight meter attempt at 6:16 to make the score, 7-1. Byers scored her second goal of the game at 2:23 and a Murphy goal at 0:03 completed the run.
Ohio State cut the Notre Dame lead to four by scoring four goals to open the second half. Megan Levins (Fr., Hatfield, Pa.) opened the run at 28:53. A Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) goal made it 9-3 at 25:23. OSU goals by Amanda Shimp (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) (25:07) and Rachel Hawes (So., Eldersburg, Md.) (22:24) cut the margin to four at 9-5. Notre Dame’s Alicia Billings made it 10-5 with a goal at 19:19, assisted by Murphy. Zentgraf’s third goal, assisted by Billings, at 18:38 made the lead six at 11-5. Slahor, on an eight meter attempt, scored at 16:47 to cut the lead to five (11-6). Notre Name posted the next four goals starting with Billings score at 15:40, assisted by Stoeckert. Carpenter made it 13-6 at 13:14, assisted by Heather Ferguson. Stoeckert’s second goal at 12:37 and McKinney’s third goal at 11:40, assisted by Ferguson, took the lead to nine at 15-6. Ohio State cut the lead to seven (15-8) with goals by Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) at 9:36 and Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) at 4:52. The Fighting Irish made it 16-8 with a Kaki Orr goal at 3:03, assisted by Murphy. Ohio State closed out the scoring with Slahor’s third goal of the game at 0:52 to give Notre Dame a 16-9 win.
In goal, Notre Dame’s Erin Goodman had the win (6-2), making two saves while giving up nine goals. Ohio State’s Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) took the loss (3-1) while playing 54 minutes. She had 10 saves while giving up 13 goals. Joy DeMarco (Sr., Hudson, Ohio) played six minutes in the game, giving up three goals.
Ohio State continues on the road Sunday when they play St. Bonaventure (1-3) at noon. The game is scheduled to be played at Merrill Field on the campus of Alfred University.
