COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (2-1 overall, 0-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad travels to Davidson, North Carolina to play the Davidson (0-5) Wildcats Sunday in Richardson Stadium at 1 p.m. Last week in home matches, Ohio State defeated Duquesne, 13-8 and lost, 15-14, to 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The head coach for the Buckeyes is Sue Stimmel. Ohio State (2-1, 0-1 ALC) defeated Duquesne, 13-8 and lost, 15-14 to 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins in home games last week. Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) has a team-high 19 points on the season with eight goals and a team-high 11 assists. Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) has 11 points with a team-high 10 goals and an assist. Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) ranks third in points with seven with four goals and three assists. Danielle Gibson (Sr., Springfield, Pa.) has a team-high eight ground balls with Bethany Carey (Jr., Eldersburg, Md.) and Laura Burke (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) tied for second with seven. In draw controls, Haggerty leads the team with five while Kendall Gysin (So., Noblesville, Ind.), Amanda Shimp (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) and Miller have four each. Carey has a team-high five caused turnovers with Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Gibson tied for second with three each. In goal, Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) has three starts on the season and a 2-0 record. She has an 8.77 goals against average and a .475 saves percentage in 143:40. Joy DeMarco (Sr., Hudson, Ohio) has played in two games and has a 0-1 record. She is averaging 8.26 goals against and has a .615 saves percentage with 36:20 playing time. A LOOK AT DAVIDSON
The head coach for the Wildcats is Betsy Econonou. Davidson is 0-5 prior to a Thursday home game against George Washington. Last Week the Wildcats lost to Monmouth, 14-8 and Robert Morris, 19-11, in games played in West Palm Beach, Fla. and lost to Duquesne, 10-9, at home in overtime. Bianca Mitchell leads Davidson in points with seven on four goals and three assists. Sarah Walter is second in points with six from six goals. Emily Diefendorf, Cheli Bleda and Becky Horton each have five points on the season. Diefendorf and Bleda each have five goals while Horton has four goals and an assist. Anna Mitchell has a team-high 17 ground balls for the Wildcats. Alana Vaughn and Alison Antieri are tied for second with 12. In draw controls, Horton has a team-high of nine. Walter is second with seven and Haley Cook has six for third. Mitchell leads the team in caused turnovers with 13. Clair O’Shea and Cook are tied for second with 10 each. In goal, Michelle Pav has an 0-2 record, a 12.64 goals against average and a .442 saves percentage. Laura Johnson is 0-3 and has a 12.73 goals against average and a .422 saves percentage.
OHIO STATE – DAVIDSON SERIES
Ohio State leads the series with Davidson, 8-2. The Buckeyes have won the last eight contests against the Wildcats and have won three of four played at Davidson, including the last three. Last year Ohio State won, 15-6, in Columbus with OSU’s KC Carter and Jessica Patane scoring three goals each and Kristen Slahor adding two. OSU goalie Kristen Gilwee played 40:05 for the win making two saves and giving up three goals.
SLAHOR IS BUCKEYE POINT LEADER
Kristen Slahor collected 12 points last week with four goals and eight assists in two games. She had a goal and four assists against Duquesne and added three goals and four assists against Johns Hopkins. Her seven points against Johns Hopkins equaled her career high set at Robert Morris (4-3) to open the season.
SLAHOR NOW TIED FOR FIFTH IN OHIO STATE CAREER ASSISTS
Kristen Slahor, with eight assists last week, now has 44 for her career and has moved into a tie for fifth on the Ohio State career assist list. She is tied with Shannon Wilson (2000-03). Slahor moved past Regina Oliver (2002-05) with 41 and Megan Mirick (1999-02) with 39. In career points, Slahor now ranks 13th with 74 with 30 goals and 44 assists.
MILLER NOW TIED FOR NINTH IN OHIO STATE CAREER DRAW CONTROLS
Natale Miller had two draw controls against Duquesne and one against Johns Hopkins has raised her career total to 45 and moves her into a tie for ninth on the Ohio State career list. She is tied with Brandie Williams (2002-05). Miller added a goal and two ground balls against Johns Hopkins. She produced two goals, including the game winner, and an assist in the Duquesne game.
HAGGERTY HAS BACK-TO-BACK FOUR-GOAL GAMES
Kelly Haggerty recorded four goals in each game last week. She has 10 on the season and leads the team in that category. Haggerty is second on the team in points with 11. She added a ground ball, a draw control and a caused turnover in the Duquesne game. Against Johns Hopkins, she had a career-high four draw controls scored one of her four goals on an eight-meter attempt.
YOURICK HAS GOALS IN THREE STRAIGHT GAMES
Keri Yourick (So., Castle Rock, Colo.) scored a goal against Duquesne and added two against Johns Hopkins to give her goals in each of Ohio State three games this season. Her two goals against Johns Hopkins equaled her career high for the third time. She had two goals at Robert Morris and scored twice against Robert Morris in 2006.
CAREY LEADS THE SQUAD IN CAUSED TURNOVERS WITH FIVE
Bethany Carey equaled her career-high of two caused turnovers against Duquesne and added one against Johns Hopkins to lead the team with five on the season. A non-starter, she had a goal and a ground ball in the Johns Hopkins game.
PATANE HAS A CAREER-HIGH FOUR GOALS AGAINST DUQUESNE
Jessica Patane (Jr. Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored a career-high four goals in the Duquesne game last week. Her previous high was three goals against Davidson and Penn State in 2006. Patane added a ground ball and two draw controls against the Dukes. She posted a ground ball and a caused turnover against Johns Hopkins and had an eight meter attempt against the Blue Jays.
GILWEE GETS THE WIN AGAINST DUQUESNE
Kristen Gilwee played the entire 60 minutes against Duquesne for a 13-8 win. She had eight saves and equaled her career-high of four ground balls against the Dukes. Gilwee started the game against Johns Hopkins, playing the first half while recording five saves and giving up 10 goals. For the season, she has an 8.77 goals against average and a .475 saves percentage.
DeMARCO PLAYS THE SECOND HALF AGAINST JOHNS HOPKINS
Joy DeMarco played the second half against Johns Hopkins giving up five goals while making eight saves. She took the loss in the game after the Buckeyes rallied to tie the game with 49 seconds left. The Blue Jays won the game with an eight meter goal with 12 seconds left. DeMarco has played in two games this season and has an 8.26 goals against average and a .615 saves percentage.
GIBSON HAS A CAREER-HIGH FOUR GROUND BALLS AGAINST JOHNS HOPKINS
Danielle Gibson recorded a career-high four ground balls in the Johns Hopkins game and leads the team with eight. She had one ground ball and two caused turnovers in the Duquesne game. A starter in all three games, she has three caused turnovers on the season.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her 12th season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to OSU. Stimmel is 85-84 at Ohio State (12 years) and is 161-102 in her 17-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
GILWEE SELECTED TO ALC PRESEASON TEAM
Ohio State women’s lacrosse Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) has been selected to the 2007 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team by a vote of the league’s five head coaches. Gilwee played in 13 games as a freshman, starting 11. She had a 4-7 record averaging a 10.94 goals against average and a .526 saves percentage. She was named to the 2006 second team ALC All-Conference Team. Ohio State was picked to finished fifth in the Conference by a vote of the coaches. Two-time defending NCAA champion Northwestern was picked to win their third ALC title in a row.

Ohio State 13, Duquesne 8
The Ohio State (2-0) women’s lacrosse team pulled away in the second half for a 13-8 win over Duquesne (2-2) Wednesday afternoon at the North Turf Field. OSU’s Jessica Patane and Kelly Haggerty each scored four goals for the Buckeyes with Natale Miller adding two. Duquesne’s Ashley Wood recorded three goals and Kathleen McNish added two for the Dukes.
Ohio State opened the scoring with a Patane goal assisted by Amanda Shimp at 28:45. Duquesne responded at 26:42 with a McNish goal assisted by Sarah Carson. OSU’s Miller made it 2-1 at 24:28 with a goal. The Dukes tied the game at two with a Wood goal at 21:56 and took a 3-2 lead at 15:16 on a Wood goal. Ohio State tied the game at three with a Haggerty goal at 8:18, assisted by Kristen Slahor. A Sarah Cates goal at 5:18, assisted by McNish, gave Duquesne a 4-3 lead going into halftime.
Duquesne opened the second half with Wood’s third goal at 29:01 on a McNish assist to take a two goal (5-3) lead. Two goals by Patane, the first at 28:06 and the second at 23:25 on a Slahor assist tied the game at five. Ohio State took a 6-5 lead with a Haggerty goal, assist by Slahor at 21:37. Duquesne, with a Stacie Pollock, goal tied the game at six at 19:37. The Buckeyes took the lead back at 18:48 with a Keri Yourick goal. Patane scored her fourth goal of the game at 18:15 on a Slahor assist and a Miller goal at 14:36 gave the Buckeyes a 9-6 lead. The Dukes, with a McNish goal at 14:17, assisted by Janna Faulkner, stopped the Buckeye run at 9-7. Ohio State added four goals over the next five minutes to take a 13-7 lead. The run began with a Haggerty goal at 9:44, assisted by Miller. Slahor then scored at 7:34 to make the lead, 11-7. Haggerty added her fourth goal of the game at 6:11 and Shimp scored OSU’s 13th goal of the game at 4:46. Duquesne ended the scoring with a Becky Green goal at 3:28 for the final 13-8 margin to Ohio State.
In goal for Ohio State, Kristen Gilwee had eight saves while giving up eight goals and playing the entire game. Caitlin Carducci took the loss for Duquesne, giving up 13 goals and making three saves in 60 minutes.
Johns Hopkins 15, Ohio State 14
The Ohio State (2-1, 0-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team lost in the final seconds, 15-14, to 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins (4-1, 1-0) at the North Turf Field Sunday afternoon. The Buckeyes overcame a four-goal (12-8) Blue Jay lead in the second half to tie the game at 14 with :49 seconds left but Johns Hopkins scored the winning goal with 12 seconds left on an eight meter shot by Kirby Houck to secure the win. Ohio State’s Kristen Slahor scored a game-high seven points with three goals and four assists with Kelly Haggerty adding four goals. Sam Schrum and Mary Key scored a team-high five points each in the game with Schrum recording four goals and an assist and Key, two goals and three assists.
Ohio State opened the scoring with a Keri Yourick goal at 20:24. Johns Hopkins scored the next four goals for a 4-1 lead. Schrum tied the game at one at 16:38 with a Key assist. The Blue Jays took a 2-1 lead with a Steph Janice goal at 16:26. Kirby Houck, assisted by Sarah Walsh, at 16:06 and a Walsh goal at 15:30, assisted by Lauren Schwarzmann, made it 4-1. Amanda Shimp scored to cut the lead to two (4-2) at 13:26. Schrum scored on an eight meter attempt at 12:03 and Walsh at 10:39 to make it 6-3. Slahor, assisted by Yourick at 9:27 made it 6-3. Schrum, with an eight meter goal at 8:31 made it 7-3. OSU’s Natale Miller scored at 8:03 on an eight meter attempt to cut the lead to three. The Buckeyes made it a two-goal (7-5) game at 7:00 with a Haggerty goal, assisted by Slahor. A Janice goal at 3:59 made it, 8-5, but OSU’s Megan Levins responded with an eight meter goal at 2:39 to make it 8-6. The Blue Jays, with a Key goal at 1:22, assisted by Alex Nolan, and a Janice goal at 0:47, assisted by Schrum, made it 10-6. The Buckeyes closed out the half with a Kendall Gysin goal at 38 seconds to trail by three, 10-7 at half.
The Buckeyes opened the second half with Joy DeMarco in goal. Haggerty opened the scoring at 27:44, assisted by Slahor to make it 10-8. The Blue Jays responded with a Key goal at 24:13, assisted by Houck, and a Walsh goal at 23:50 to take a four-goal lead at 12-8. A Slahor goal at 16:51 cut the lead to 12-9 and Haggerty, with an eight meter goal at 13:37 made it, 12-10. Johns Hopkins made it 13-10 with a Janice goal at 13:20, assisted by Key. Slahor’s eight meter goal at 10:53 cut the lead to two at 13-11. The Blue Jays responded with a Schrum goal, assisted by Key, at 7:56 to put the lead at three, 14-11. Johns Hopkins controlled the draw and had five shots with DeMarco making four saves before OSU controlled the ball leading to a Haggerty goal at 4:06, assisted by Slahor, to trail, 14-12. The Blue Jays controlled the draw but a turnover gave the Buckeyes the ball leading to a Yourick goal at 1:33, assisted by Slahor cutting the lead to one at 14-13. Johns Hopkins again controlled the draw but a turnover caused by Bethany Carey allowed her to score with 49 seconds left to tie the game at 14. The Blue Jays controlled the draw with both teams having turnovers in the action but Johns Hopkins scored with 12 seconds left on an eight meter goal by Houck to take a 15-14 lead. Ohio State controlled the draw and was awarded an eight meter attempt with .9 seconds left. Shimp’s shot was saved by Blue Jays goalie Amelia Harris to end the game, giving Johns Hopkins a 15-14 win.
In goal, Harris had the win while making 10 saves and giving up 14 goals. Kristen Gilwee started the game and played 30 minutes. She had five saves and gave up 10 goals. DeMarco played 30 minutes and had eight saves while giving up five goals.
