Three Buckeyes finish in the Top 11, led by Kyle Coconis in second
COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State men’s golf team continued its solid play this fall with a third-place finish at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. The Buckeyes finished the three-day, 54-hole event at 11-over-par with a total of 875 strokes. Virginia Tech and Tulsa finished tied atop the leaderboard at 8-over and the Hokies took the tournament title based on the fifth player’s score. Fellow Big Ten member Iowa joined Ohio State three shots back of the leaders.
Ohio State started the day trailing by 10 strokes, but was able to make up seven of them to finish three shots back of the leaders. The Buckeyes got within one shot of the lead, but hiccups on the third and fourth holes (their 12th and 13th of the day) prevented them from climbing all the way back. The team shot 6-over-par 294 for the day, the third lowest team score of the final round.
Buckeyes Kyle Coconis, Patrick Simard, and Zach Sebert tamed the par 72, 7,130-yard Jack Nicklaus Course at the Country Club of Landfall all three rounds to finish in the Top 11. Coconis had the best tournament of his career, placing second at 4-under 212 for the event. The senior co-captain from Zanesville, Ohio, fired a final round of 73.
Simard was three shots back from Coconis at 1-under giving him a fourth place finish, his second consecutive Top 4 performance. The sophomore from Madrid, Spain, shot the low round for the day for Ohio State with a 72 and was at par or below for all three rounds of the tournament. Simard and Coconis were two of just four golfers in the field of 60 to complete the event under par.
With a final round of 74, Sebert, a Grove City, Ohio native and team co-captain, finished in 11th at 3-over 219. Sebert was 2-under on the front nine in his final round.
Rounding out the Buckeye golfers were freshman Bo Hoag and junior Dan Rush who finished in a tie for 44th at 232 (+16).
Ohio State will next travel to Stockton, Calif., to compete in the Pacific Invitational Nov. 5-7. The tournament concludes the fall schedule for the Buckeyes.
