No. 15 Women’s Volleyball Defeats IPFW, 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 15th ranked Ohio State (9-0) women’s volleyball team, behind 15 points from Danielle Meyer (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and 14 from Anna Szerszen (Fr., Conflans Ste Hne, France) defeated IPFW (6-7), 3-0 (30-12, 30-25, 30-26) Tuesday night in St. John Arena. Meyer had a match-high 15 kills (464) while Szerszen had 12 kills (.440), one ace serve and two assist blocks. IPFW’s Cynara Martins recorded 11.5 points with Nicole Howell adding 10. Martins had 11 kills and an assist block with Howell contributing seven kills, two ace serves and a solo block.
Ohio State opened game one with a five-point run off kills by Meyer, Szerszen, Kristen Dozier (Fr., Sandy Spring, Md.) and Marisa Main (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) and a Szerszen-Dozier block. At 8-4, an IPFW error, kills by Szerszen and Meyer and two by Dozier opened a 13-4 margin. OSU held a 24-12 lead when two Mastodon errors, two Szerszen kills and a Felicia Jones (Sr., Concord, Ont.) kill set game point at 29-12. Dozier served an ace to end the game at 30-12. Ohio State hit .444 for the game to -.069 for IPFW.
After four ties took the score to six-all, Ohio State scored six straight points to open a 12-6 lead. The run began with kills from Szerszen and Briana McCarthy (Sr./Jr., Beaver Dam, Wis.), an IFPW error, an Ami Stevens (Jr., Centerburg, Ohio) ace serve, a Dozier-McCarthy block and a Dozier kill. The Mastodons then outscored the Buckeyes 10-5 to cut the lead to one at 17-16. Buckeye kills by Jones and Szerszen made it 19-16, OSU. A Patricia Azevedo kill cut the margin to 19-17. Ohio State took the lead to 21-17 with kills by McCarthy and Szerszen. At 22-20, kills by Main and Dozier and an IPFW error gave OSU a 25-20 lead. At 26-21, kills by Jessica Miller and Claire Jackson with an OSU error cut the Ohio State lead to two at 26-24. An OSU kill by Meghan Simons (Fr., Carroll, Ohio) and one by IPFW’s Howell put the score at 27-25. Two Mastodon errors set game point at 29-25 and a Simons-McCarthy block ended the game at 30-25 to give OSU a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .406 for the game to .250 for IPFW. In game three, OSU broke a 2-2 tie with a kill and ace serve by McCarthy. IPFW, with a Howell kill and two ace serves from Jessica Miller took a 5-4 lead. Buckeye kills by Main and Szerszen gave OSU a 6-5 lead. Two OSU errors and a solo block by Howell returned the lead back to IFPW at 8-6. Three Mastodon errors and a Meyer kill gave OSU a 10-8 lead. IPFW responded with a solo block by Jackson and two ace serve from Howell to take an 11-10 lead. A Meyer kill and an IPFW error gave OSU a 12-11 lead. A Jessica Dominiak kill tied the game at 12. At 14-all, kills by Szerszen and Meyer and a Mastodon error gave OSU a 17-14 lead. A Buckeye error and a Miller ace serve cut the OSU lead to one at 17-16. At 19-18, a Meyer kill and an IPFW error opened a 21-18 lead for Ohio State. Five times the squads exchanged points to reach 26-23. A Meyer kill gave OSU a 27-23 margin. The Mastodons responded with kills from Howell and Martins and an Amanda Pfister ace serve to cut the lead to one at 27-26. A Mastodon error made the OSU lead, 28-26. A block by Main and Simons set match point at 29-26. The Buckeyes closed out the game with a Szerszen kill to win, 30-26, taking the match, 3-0. Ohio State hit .385 for the game to .211 for IPFW.
For the match, Ohio State hit .408 to .150 for IPFW. The Buckeyes had a 52-34 advantage in kills while each squad recorded six ace serves. The Mastodons gave up 10 service errors to nine for Ohio State. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 48-34 margin in digs with OSU’s Stevens and IPFW’s Peachy Jankowski sharing match-high honors with 16 each. At the net, OSU had a seven to four edge in team blocks. OSU’s Dozier recorded a match-high five assist blocks. OSU’s setter, Main, collected 43 assists in the match with IPFW’s Dominiak recording 19 and Shannon Reuter, eight.
Ohio State now travels to Youngstown State (6-5) Wednesday at 7 p.m. to being a string of five road matches over the next three weeks.
