No. 23 Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Iona, 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

The 23rd ranked Ohio State (5-0) women’s volleyball team behind an 18-point performance by Ami Stevens (Jr., Centerburg, Ohio) defeated Iona (1-4), 3-0 (30-9, 30-11, 30-14) in the second round the Buckeye Invitational in St. John Arena. Stevens had 14 kills, while hitting .667, adding three ace serves and two assist blocks. Iona’s Megan Dailey and Morgan Young shared team-high honors with 6.5 points each. Daily and Morgan each had six kills and an assist block.
Ohio State hit .513 for the match to -.046 for Iona. OSU had a 47-16 advantage in kills and a 12-1 edge in ace serves. Each squad gave up six service errors. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 27-17 advantage in digs with Stevens collecting a match-high eight. At the net, OSU had a 6-3 edge in team blocks with Meghan Simons (Fr., Carroll, Ohio) and Briana McCarthy (Sr./Jr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) recording three assists each. OSU’s Marisa Main (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) recorded 34 assists in the match while Iona’s Beth Holly had 14.
NORTHERN ILLINOIS DEFEATS LEHIGH, 3-0 (30-19, 30-12, 30-14)
Northern Illinois (4-2) defeated Lehigh (0-5), 3-0 (30-19, 30-12, 30-14) in the first match of the second round of the Buckeye Invitational. Huskie Laura Baetzel had a match-high 17 points with 16 kills and two assist blocks. Lehigh’s Michelle Schwendenmann scored a team-high 16.5 points for the Mountain Hawks with 16 kills and an assist block.
Northern Illinois hit .505 for the match to .165 for Lehigh. The Huskies had a 58-33 advantage in kill and a four-zero edge in ace serves. Lehigh gave up six service errors to four for Northern Illinois. The Huskies enjoyed a 53-30 edge in digs with Gina Guide recording a match-high 21. At the net, NIU had five team blocks to 1.5 for Lehigh. Huskie setters Mandi Caputo had 22 assists with teammate Amanda Tadla adding 21. Lehigh’s Sarah Wolfe recorded 24 assists in the match.
The Buckeye Invitational continues Saturday at 10 a.m. with Lehigh and Iona playing in the OSU RPAC facility. Ohio State will face Northern Illinois Sunday at 2 p.m. in St. John Arena to close out the tournament.
