Women’s Volleyball Ranked 23rd Nationally in Preseason Poll – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team has been ranked 23rd in the preseason College Sports Television (CSTV)/American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll released today by the AVCA. The Buckeyes received 346 points in the poll beginning the season in the same spot they ended the 2005 season. Ohio State was 22-9 overall last year, finishing in a tie for third in the Big Ten Conference with a 14-6 record.
FIVE BIG TEN TEAM RANKED IN THE TOP 25
The Buckeyes are one of five Big Ten teams ranked the preseason poll. Penn State leads the Big Ten contingent at No. 2, followed by No. 9 Wisconsin, No. 16 Purdue and No. 22 Minnesota. Northwestern received votes from the panel of coaches.
FIVE 2006 STARTERS RETURNING
The Buckeyes return five of six starters from the 2005 season. American Volleyball Coaches Association second-team All-American setter Marisa Main (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) and AVCA third-team All-American middle blocker Danielle Meyer (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) top the returning starters that include outside hitters Ami Stevens (Jr., Centerburg, Ohio), Felicia Jones (Sr., Concord, Ontario) and Ashley Kiel (Sr., Allenton, Wis.). Libero starter Brittany Dahms (Jr., Byron, Ill.) rounds out a solid returning group for the Buckeyes. BUCKEYES WELCOME A STRONG FRESHMEN CLASS
A total of seven freshmen will form the Class of 2009 for the Buckeyes. The class includes setter Ashley Hughes (Fr., Carroll, Ohio), outside hitters Heather Royal (Fr., Plano, Texas) and Anna Szerszen (Fr., Conflans Ste Hne, France), middle blockers Meghan Simons (Fr., Carroll, Ohio) and Kristen Dozier (Fr., Sandy Spring, Md.) and liberos/defensive specialists Lindsay Schad (Fr., St. Louis, Mo.) and Michelle Hammond (Fr., Columbus, Ohio).
OHIO STATE OPENS THE SEASON AUG. 26
The Buckeyes open the 2006 season at the Towson Invitational when they face Robert Morris and Houston, Saturday, Aug. 26 and Towson, Sunday, Aug. 27.
