COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State rowing team held its annual team banquet Friday, celebrating its many achievements during the 2006 season. The Buckeyes won both the Big Ten and Central Region championships while also posting their highest point total at the NCAA Championships and placing third in the varsity four NCAA Grand Final for the highest finish ever by any Ohio State boat in the national championship.
Prior to the banquet, head coach Andy Teitelbaum, along with the parents of Nikki Meifert, christened a boat in her memory. Meifert was a former member of the novice team and was the team’s manager before passing away in February.
The team distributed its awards, with senior co-captain Katie Poling (Elyria, Ohio) receiving the Most Improved Award. First Team All-American and Big Ten Rower of the Year Ninett Kossowsky (Sr., Leipzig, Germany) was named Most Valuable Rower, while Sarah Mominee (Sr., Martin, Ohio) earned the Golden Buckeye Award. Mominee received the award for her spirit and inspiration after coming back from a broken rib early in the season to help the varsity four place third at NCAAs. Chelsea Smith was selected as the Novice of the Year.
Ohio State paid tribute to the squad’s academic accomplishments as well, including the 24 Academic All-Big Ten selections and 42 OSU Scholar-Athletes. The program also honored Kossowsky and Jana Schiller (Sr., Marquardt, Germany) for being four-year letterwinners. Along with Kossowsky, Schiller, Poling, and Mominee, the Buckeyes recognized fellow seniors Susan Cohen, Olga Grigorieva, Katie Machingo, Beth Tompkins and Sarah Obee for their dedication and accomplishments.
