COLUMBUS, Ohio – Five Ohio State rowers were named to the CRCA All-Central Region team and four were selected as CRCA National Scholar Athletes, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced Monday. Two Buckeyes, junior Annabelle Fago and senior Beth Tompkins, were chosen for both honors. All five Ohio State student-athletes who received honors are members of the first varsity eight boat, which was ranked as high has No. 4 this year.
Senior Ninett Kossowsky (Leipzig, Germany) and Fago (Giessen, Germany) were named First Team All-Central Region. It is the second All-Region nod for Kossowsky, who was named to the second team in 2005. This year, she was also named Big Ten Rowing Athlete of the Year and First Team All-Big Ten. Fago is now a two-time First Team All-Region honoree to go along with her two First Team All-Big Ten selections.
Junior Jessica Shepherd (Richmond, Ohio), freshman Colleen Saville (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Tompkins (Westerville, Ohio) earned Second Team All-Central Region nods. It is the first All-Region honor for all three student-athletes. Tompkins was a First Team All-Big Ten selection this year and Shepherd received Second Team All-Big Ten honors.
Fago, a health science major, and Tompkins, a biology major, were also named CRCA National Scholar Athletes. It is the second time Tompkins has earned the award. Sophomore Gabriele Albertaviciute (Vilnius, Lithuania) and senior Jana Schiller (Marquardt, Germany), both marketing majors, were selected as National Scholar Athlete as well. The award recognizes student-athletes in their sophomore year or higher with a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher that competed in 75 percent of her team’s 2006 spring races.
Ohio State next makes its seventh-consecutive appearance at the NCAA championships May 26-28 when the team travels to West Windsor, N.J., to compete for the national title. The Buckeyes, who tied their program best last year by finishing fourth overall, are racing in all three events: first and second varsity eight and first varsity four.
