Rowing Wins Fourth-Consecutive Central Region Championship – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 4 Ohio State rowing team won its fourth-consecutive Central Region title at the 2006 Aramark Central/South Region Championships Sunday. The Buckeyes topped the overall standings for the first time since 2003 with 366 points, edging fellow Big Ten team Wisconsin with 361. Host Tennessee won the South Region crown with 294 points. Ohio State won two of four Grand Finals in which it raced.
“I am thrilled. This was the most incredible racing I have ever seen at this regatta,” Andy Teitelbaum, Ohio State head coach, said. “We’re really fortunate to come out on top. It speaks well of our athletes that they figured out a way to keep the string (of Central Region championships) alive. The depth of competition was greater than it’s ever been. I feel more fortunate than anything.”
The second varsity eight boat continued its unbeaten streak dating back to April 1 with a victory its Grand Final. Lavinia Tinelli (Fr., Rome, Italy), Andrea Dymalski (So., Bremen, Germany), Simone Haubner (So., Leipzig, Germany), Justine Mahler (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio), Katie Poling (Sr., Elyria, Ohio), Zuzanna Trzcinska (Fr., Ilawa, Poland), Briony Clare (Jr., Sydney, Australia), Olga Grigorieva (Sr., Moscow, Russia) and coxswain Sarah Obee (Sr., Toledo, Ohio) clocked in at 6:34.20 to defeat three other Big Ten teams. Wisconsin was second at 6:36.17, followed by Michigan State (6:37.85), Michigan (6:39.04), Notre Dame (6:42.21) and Virginia (6:44.35). The Ohio State `A’ boat also won the open four Grand Final. Susan Cohen (Sr., Milford, Conn.), Katie Machingo (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio), Mackenzie Hiltbrand (Jr., Upper Arlington, Ohio), Giulia Benedetti (Jr., Columbus, Ohio) and coxswain Katie McFarland (So., Elyria, Ohio) cruised in with a time of 7:40.70. Tennessee crossed next at 7:44.34 with Wisconsin (7:45.45), Virginia `B’ (7:47.73), Notre Dame `A’ (7:53.93) and Notre Dame `B’ (7:57.54) rounding out the event.
In the first varsity eight Grand Final, the Buckeyes came in .82 seconds behind Notre Dame to take second place. The Fighting Irish won with a time of 6:26.00. Charlott Goldstein (Fr., Berlin, Germany), Jana Schiller (Sr., Marquardt, Germany), Susanne Herbrand (Fr., Magdeburg, Germany), Ninett Kossowsky (Sr., Leipzig, Germany), Gabriele Albertaviciute (So., Vilnius, Lithuania), Beth Tompkins (Sr., Westerville, Ohio), Annabelle Fago (Jr., Giessen, Germany), Jessica Shepherd (Jr., Richmond, Ohio) and coxswain Colleen Saville (Fr., Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) clocked in at 6:26.82. Tennessee was third at 6:27.34, followed by Wisconsin (6:28.79), Minnesota (6:29.07) and Michigan (6:31.85).
The Buckeyes also finished second in the Grand Final of the first varsity four. Virginia took first with 7:22.00. The OSU boat of Patricia Goodeman (Jr., Waterville, Ohio), Mary Sheehan (Jr., Johnstown, Pa.), Peta-Leigh Dakyns (Fr., Johannesburg, South Africa), Sarah Mominee (Sr., Martin, Ohio) and coxswain Susie Wilson (Jr., Fredericktown, Ohio) finished at 7:26.95 to defeat four other Big Ten boats. Wisconsin was third at 7:29.60, with Michigan State (7:31.18), Minnesota (7:34.35) and Michigan (7:39.99) rounding out the race.
OSU also competed in two Final C races. The first novice eight won its Final C at 7:20.80, topping Tennessee at 7:25.91. The Ohio State `B’ boat placed third in the open four Final C with a time of 8:03.18. Virginia won the event at 7:52.90 and Indiana was second at 7:57.09.
The NCAA announces the field for the 2006 Championships Tuesday at 3 p.m. Ohio State is looking for its seventh-consecutive appearance in the event. This year the championships take place May 26-28 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
