Women’s Lacrosse Loses, 9-4, to No. 5 North Carolina at ACC/ALC Challenge – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (0-6 overall) women’s lacrosse team lost a 9-4 decision to fifth-ranked North Carolina (6-3) at the Atlantic Coast Conference/American Lacrosse Conference Challenge hosted by Maryland. OSU’s Natale Miller (Jr., West Chester, Pa.), Jessica Patane (So., Farmingdale, N.Y.), Kelly Kremer (So., Kennett Square, Pa.) and Kristen Slahor (So., Ellicott City, Md.) scored goals for the Buckeyes. North Carolina’s Brooke Dieringer and Melissa McCarthy scored three goals each for the Tar Heels with Christina Juras, Meg Freshwater and Kelly Taylor adding a goal each.
Ohio State’s Kremer opened the scoring with an unassisted goal with 2:09 gone in the game. Dieringer, with an assist from Stephanie Scurachio, tied the game at 2:31. North Carolina took a 2-1 lead with a free position shot by McCarthy at 12:51. The Tar Heels made it 3-1 at 13:20 with a Juras goal, assisted by Dieringer. McCarthy’s second goal at 14:32 gave North Carolina a 4-1 lead. Ohio State closed out the scoring in the half at 20:20 with a Patane goal, assisted by Lindsay Weiner (Jr., Eldersburg, Md.), cutting the Tar Heel lead to 4-2.
North Carolina opened the second half with four consecutive goals to take an 8-2 lead. The run began with Dieringer’s second goal at 34:40. Freshwater scored at 36:51 to make the lead, 6-2. McCarthy, with her third goal of the game, made it 7-2, Tar Heels, at 38:03. A goal by Dieringer completed the four-goal run at 41:52, assisted by Julie Ryan, to open an 8-2 lead. Slahor’s free position goal at 43:53 for the Buckeyes made it 8-3. Taylor scored unassisted at 47:59 for the Tar Heels to make it 9-3. OSU’s Miller added an unassisted goal at 49:20 to complete the scoring for the 9-4 North Carolina win.
In goal for Ohio State, Kristen Gilwee (Fr., Hunt Valley, Md.) played the entire 60 minutes, making nine saves while giving up nine goals for the loss. Tar Heel Kristen Hordy had the win for North Carolina, making eight saves and giving up four goals.
Ohio State continues play in the ACC/ALC Challenge Sunday when the Buckeyes face host and eighth-ranked Maryland at 2 p.m. at the Lacrosse and Field Hockey Complex at Maryland.
