COLUMBUS, Ohio – The fourth-ranked Ohio State rowing team opens the 2006 spring season at the fourth-annual Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic March 25-26 at Redwood Shores in Redwood City, Calif. Action begins at 9 a.m. (PT) both Saturday and Sunday.
The teams will compete in Henley-style racing, a two-boat race used for competition at the famous Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England.
Ohio State will compete in the first and second varsity eight dual races against host school Stanford, California and Washington. The Buckeyes face Cal at 9:08 a.m. (PT) and Washington at 3:32 p.m. Saturday and Stanford at 10:36 a.m. Sunday in the first varsity eight races. The second varsity eight races are at 10:28 a.m., 4:44 p.m. and 9:16 a.m., respectively.
The regatta also includes men’s and women’s teams from Boston University, British Columbia, Harvard, Long Beach State, Loyola, Navy, Northeastern, Oregon State, Pennsylvania, Princeton, Santa Clara, Sonoma State, Syracuse, Trinity College, Virginia, UC Davis and Yale.
Tough Competition
The Buckeyes face some tough competition at the Windermere Classic with a varsity eight field that features five other teams ranked in the Top 20 in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division I Varsity Eight preseason poll released March 13.
No. 4 Ohio State faces second-ranked California, No. 10 Washington and No. 15 Stanford in dual races. The competition also includes No. 3 Virginia and No. 16 Boston University. Rivanna Romp Recap
Buckeyes concluded their fall season with two victories at the Rivanna Romp Nov. 13 at the Rivanna Reservoir in Charlotesville, Va. Ohio State’s first varsity eight won its event for the fifth-consecutive year while the first pair also won its race. OSU also competed in the varsity four with the second boat finishing fourth in the event.
The first varsity eight finished with a time of 13:51.88 to take first over 21 other boats. They finished almost nine seconds ahead of Wisconsin in second place at 14:02.30. The second OSU varsity eight was 11th with a time of 14:47.40, while the third varsity eight placed 16th at 15:12.62.
In the pair race, the first Buckeye pair won with a time of 17:07.94. The second, third and fourth OSU pairs finished seventh (18:06.57), eighth (18:46.63) and ninth (19:45.75), respectively.
The second Ohio State boat had the best finish in the varsity four race, placing fourth out of 24 teams with a time of 16:09.58. The first OSU varsity four was 10th at 16:27.75, while the third varsity four was 21st at 17:20.35.
The 2004-05 Season
Ohio State concluded its 10th year of rowing in honorable fashion. The Buckeyes tied a program best fourth-place finish at the 2005 NCAA Championships, received their third-consecutive regional title and placed second at the Big Ten championships.
Ohio State began its spring season with its first of three home regattas, facing nationally ranked Virginia and Duke at the ACC/Big Ten duals. The squad defeated both teams to place themselves into the Top 3 teams in the nation and earn Big Ten Boat of the Week accolades. Following a strong start to the season, the first varsity eight remained in the Top 10 in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Poll the rest of the season and suffered only one loss, which came against Michigan.
At the Big Ten championships, OSU finished second in the conference and took that momentum into the regional championship. Ohio State came out on top to clinch its third-consecutive Central Regional title and receive a bid to its sixth-consecutive NCAA championships.
The Buckeyes tied their program best receiving fourth place overall as a team at the NCAA championships in Sacramento, Calif. Both the first and second varsity eight boats made their third appearance in the Grand Finals, which marked the first time both boats appeared simultaneously in the event. The first varsity finished sixth, while the second varsity eight took fourth place. The first varsity four took fourth place in the petite final to finish 10th overall.
For their success during the postseason, the Buckeye’s received numerous awards, including three All-Americans, four earned All-Central Region honors and four were named to All-Big Ten teams. Assistant coach Robbie Tenenbaum concluded the awards, receiving Central Regional Assistant of the Year.
For their effort off the water and in the classroom, the Buckeye’s garnered 21 Academic All-Big Ten honorees and 44 Ohio State Scholar-Athletes.
Next up for the Buckeyes
Ohio State will host its next two events. The Buckeyes welcome teams April 1 for the ACC/Big Ten Duals. Tennessee and USC then come to Columbus April 8. Both regattas began at 9 a.m.
