Women’s Lacrosse late rally falls short in 12-11 loss at California – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (0-2 overall) women’s lacrosse team dropped a 12-11 decision at California (2-1) Sunday. The Buckeyes fell behind early, trailin,g 6-0 and were down, 9-3 at the half. Trailing, 12-7, with seven minutes remaining, OSU scored four goals to climb within one at 12-11, the last goal with seven seconds remaining in the game. OSU’s KC Carter (Sr., Birchrunville, Pa.) scored a team-high four goals in the contest with Kristen Slahor (So., Ellicott City, Md.) adding two. Danni Zuralow of California had a team-high three goals for the Bears with Liz Reifsnyder and Jocelyn Paul adding two each.
California opened the scoring with three consecutive goals by Zuralow at 0:52, 5:10 and 16:29 gone in the game. Her first two goals were unassisted and the third was a free position shot. Bear goals by Schuyler Sokolow (17:11), assisted by Sam Price, Reifsnyder (18:25) on a free position shot and Cristen Andrews (18:54) gave California a 6-0 lead. OSU’s Kendall Gysin (Fr., Noblesville, Ind.) put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard with a goal at 23:49. California took the lead to 8-1 with scores from Laura Cavallo (24:46) and Jocelyn Paul (25:27). Ohio State closed out the scoring in the half with a Kelly Kremer (So., Kennett Square, Pa.) goal at 25:40, assisted by Kristen Hannon (So., Sykesville, Md.) and a score by Jessica Patane (So., Farmingdale, N.Y.) at 26:42, to end the half at 8-3, California. California took a 9-3 lead at 33:02 of the second half. OSU’s Natale Miller (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) scored at 35:21 on an assist from Carter. Price made it 10-4 at 38:58 with an assist by Reifsnyder. The Buckeyes responded at 41:40 with a Carter goal and a Slahor free position goal at 43:01 to cut the Bear lead to four at 10-6. California took the lead to five with a goal by Paul, assisted by Reifsnyder at 47:38. OSU’s Carter scored unassisted at 52:12 to make it 11-7. Bear Madeleine Dale scored the game winning goal on a free position shot at 52:59 to lead, 12-7. The Buckeyes rallied to close within one with four consecutive goals. Slahor at 53:32 and Carter at 53:42 scored unassisted goals to cut the lead to 12-9. Bethany Carey (So., Eldersburg, Md.), with an assist from Slahor scored at 57:29 to trail by two. Carter, with her fourth goal of the game, unassisted, cut the Bear lead to one at 59:53 for the final, 12-11 California win.
In goal for California, Hilary Lynch picked up the win, making nine saves while giving up 11 goals. Buckeye Kim Hastings (Sr., Sewickley, Pa.) took the loss, making 16 saves, yielding 12 goals.
Ohio State returns home next Saturday to face Penn (1-0) at 1 p.m. in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, subject to field and weather conditions.
