Women’s Lacrosse Drops Season Opener at Stanford, 17-9 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (0-1 overall) women’s lacrosse team fell to Stanford (2-1), 17-9, in the season opener for the Buckeyes. OSU’s KC Carter (Sr., Birchrunville, Pa.) scored a team-high four goals with Amanda Shimp (So., Endicott, N.Y.) adding two. Ohio State opened the game with a 2-0 lead, scoring just 35 seconds into the contest on a free position goal by Kendall Gysin (Fr., Noblesville, Ind.). Carter made it 2-0 with a goal assisted by Jessica Patane (So., Farmingdale, N.Y.) at 1:35. DeChant scored Stanford’s first goal at 2:16 on an assist by Megan McClain. At 4:06 into the game, Ohio State took a 3-1 lead on Carter’s second goal, assisted again by Patane. Stanford then scored seven consecutive goals to take an 8-3 lead. The Buckeyes made it 8-4 at 19:57 with an unassisted goal by Shimp. Stanford would score two more times in the half to take a 10-4 lead at the break.
Cardinal Elizabeth Fries opened the scoring in the second half at 30:46 with an unassisted goal. OSU responded with an unassisted goal by Shimp at 27:14. Liz Piselli made the score, 12-5 with a goal at 34:33. Carter responded at 37:53 with a goal assisted by Kristen Slahor (So., Ellicott City, Md.) to cut the lead to six at 12-6. Stanford scored five of the next six goals with OSU’s Carter scoring a free position goal at 43:40. The Buckeyes would add late free position goals by Patane (56:31) and Lindsay Weiner (Jr., Eldersburg, Md.) (59:03) to close out the scoring in the 17-9 Stanford victory.
In goal for Ohio State, Kim Hastings (Sr., Sewickley, Pa.) had 13 saves in the loss while giving up 17 goals in playing the entire game. Stanford’s Laura Shane picked up the win, playing 56:31, recording five saves and giving up eight goals. Kate Horowitz closed out the final 3:29 for the Cardinal, allowing one goal while recording two saves.
Ohio State continues the west coast road trip when they face California (1-1) Sunday.
