COLUMBUS, Ohio – Miles Avery, Ohio State men’s gymnastics head coach, announced the program’s 2006-07 schedule Thursday. The Buckeyes will spend most of the upcoming season on the road as they play host to only two home meets. Challenging sequential duals versus Penn State, Oklahoma and California will test the team’s endurance in the final weeks of competition.
“It is a brutal schedule, but I hope it will make us one of the best teams in the nation,” Avery said. “The difficult season will only help ready ourselves for the Big Ten and NCAA championships.”
The team will hold three exhibition events to fine-tune its 2007 routines. In conjunction with the Ohio State women’s gymnastics team, the men’s team will participate in the Mixed Pairs co-ed exhibition Dec. 3. The men’s and women’s squads will partner off into teams of one male and one female gymnast to compete for the Mixed Pairs crown. Next up, the Buckeyes hold the Scarlet and Gray Intersquad dual Dec. 15. The dual will turn teammates into opponents as the Scarlet team takes on the Gray team looking for its fourth consecutive win. Wrapping up the pre season activities as in years past is the Varsity Exhibition Jan. 6. At the Varsity Exhibition, the squad welcomes former-Buckeye gymnasts and friends and family to Steelwood Athletic Training Facility.
Ohio State kicks off another competitive season by traveling to Chicago Jan. 13 for the Windy City Invitational. The team will see action against both conference and non-conference opponents at the event. The Buckeyes remain on the road for a dual meet at Illinois Jan. 27 before returning for 1-of-2 home meets. The season home-opener will welcome Avery’s alma mater, Temple, Feb. 3 to St. John Arena.
The next weekend (Feb. 8-10), the program takes a break from dual meets to test its top competitors against other elite U.S. gymnasts at the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas. At the event, the leading gymnasts in the nation compete for spots on the U.S. Men’s Senior National Team.
The Buckeyes return to regular-season action with a demanding road schedule against Penn State Feb. 24 where they will have an opportunity to preview the 2007 national championships venue. Ohio State follows the Nittany Lions with a trip to Oklahoma March 3 and then heads to California March 10. The Buckeyes come home to St. John Arena for the squad’s second and final home meet against Michigan March 17.
Following the regular season, Ohio State looks to wrap up 2007 with appearances at both the Big Ten championships March 30-31 at Minnesota in Minneapolis and the national championships April 12-14 at Penn State in University Park, Pa.
