COLUMBUS, Ohio – Two power play goals, along with a shorthanded score and an empty net goal helped lift the Ohio State men’s hockey team to a 4-2 victory at Northern Michigan Saturday at Berry Events Center in Marquette Mich.
The win brings the Buckeyes’ record to 2-4-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Wildcats now are 4-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the CCHA.
John Dingle (Jr., Shaker Heights, Ohio) gave OSU the 1-0 lead 8:53 into the first period on a shorthanded goal. Matt McIlvane (Jr. Naperville, Ill.) and Johann Kroll (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) were credited with the assists. Dingle’s goal came 1:16 into the NMU power play.
The Buckeyes took their 1-0 lead into the first intermission with a 15-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Ohio State increased its lead to 2-0 in the second period when McIlvane scored on the power play 1:58 into the session. Jason DeSantis (Jr., Oxford, Mich.) and Domenic Maiani (Jr., Shelby Township, Mich.) were on the assists.
OSU continued to out-shoot the Wildcats, totaling 15 shots in the second period while limiting NMU to just three for a 30-7 margin through two periods.
DeSantis and the Buckeyes again took advantage of the OSU power play to up the lead to 3-0 just 14 seconds into the third period. Maiani earned his second assist of the night, while senior Sean Collins (Troy, Mich.) was credited with the second helper. The Wildcats got on the board less than a minute later at 1:04 when Matt Siddall and TJ Miller found Mike Santorelli for the score. Northern Michigan then cut the Buckeye lead at 11:03 on a goal by Blake Cosgrove. He was assisted by Siddall and Santorelli.
McIlvane solidified the OSU win when he scored an empty-net goal with four seconds left in the game after Northern Michigan pulled goalie Brian Stewart for the extra attacker.
OSU goalie Joseph Palmer (Fr., Utica, N.Y.) made 12 saves in all 60 minutes of action. Wildcat goalies Bill Zaniboni had 28 in 40:15 of play and Stewart had seven saves in the remaining 18:52.
Overall, the Buckeyes registered 39 shots to NMU’s 14. Ohio State was 2-for-6 on the power play and Northern Michigan was 0-for-5.
Ohio State will face Notre Dame at 8:05 p.m. Nov. 3 at Value City Arena. That game will be televised by College Sports Television (CSTV). The Buckeyes and the Fighting Irish will wrap up the series at 7:05 Nov. 4.
