Keys Scores Twice as Women’s Hockey Upsets No. 6 Minnesota, 2-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team upset No. 6 Minnesota by a score of 2-1 Friday at OSU Ice Rink on a pair of goals by junior forward Erin Keys. Senior goaltender Erika Vanderveer stopped 38 of 39 shots faced to secure the victory. The win snapped a five-game OSU losing streak and improved the Buckeyes to 3-5-2 overall and 1-5-0 in the WCHA. Minnesota is 4-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference games.
Ohio State got an early lead on a goal by Keys (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) just 4:42 into the game. Junior Jody Heywood (Regina Saskatchewan/Regina Cougars) snatched the puck from a Gopher at the blueline and passed it up to Keys who flipped it in top-shelf. Heywood picked up her third assist of the year.
The Buckeyes held their 1-0 lead into the first intermission despite being down 13-6 in shots.
Ohio State maintained its one-goal lead throughout the second period and into the second intermission. Minnesota held its lead in shots with a 10-4 margin in the stanza.
With minutes remaining in the game, the Gophers evened the score at 1-all at 17:04 when Gigi Marvin tipped in a shot from Anya Miller at the blue line. Brittany Francis picked up the second assist on the goal.
The Buckeyes came roaring back and regained the lead with just 1:08 left on the clock. During a scramble in front of the net, Keys tucked the puck in on the left side for her second goal of the game and fourth overall this season. She was assisted by Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario/Sudbury Lady Wolves), her seventh, and Morgan Marziali (St. Mary’s, Ontario/St. Michael’s), her third.
Minnesota pulled its goaltender for the final 47 seconds of the game, but Ohio State held off the final attack to preserve the 2-1 victory.
Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) made 38 saves, including 14 against the Gopher power play, to up her record to 2-2-0 this season. It was the third-consecutive game Vanderveer has made 30-plus saves. UM’s Brittony Chartier had 15 saves and moves to 4-3-1.
Overall, Minnesota had a 39-17 advantage in shots. Ohio State was 0-for-5 on the power play, but held the Gophers scoreless on the power play as well with a perfect 6-for-6 penalty kill performance.
Ohio State will next welcome Connecticut of Hockey East for a nonconference series Nov. 3-4 at OSU Ice Rink. Games begin at 7:07 p.m. Friday and 4:07 p.m. Saturday.
