No. 12 Women’s Volleyball Defeats Cleveland State in five games – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (3-1) women’s volleyball team used a triple-double (54 assists, 14 kills and 14 digs) by setter Marisa Main (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) and career-highs of 31.5 points and 29 kills from Danielle Meyer (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) to defeat Cleveland State (3-2) in five games (19-30, 30-18, 30-26, 33-35, 15-10). It was Main’s fourth career triple-double with the previous three being set as a freshman at Xavier. CSU’s Nickole Kennedy posted a team-high 18 kills for the Vikings with Jenna Maddocks adding 15.
Cleveland State broke a 2-2 tied with kills from Kennedy and Emily Clark and an OSU error to take a 5-2 lead. Trailing 7-3, the Buckeyes cut the margin to one at 9-8, but a five-point run by the Vikings opened a 14-8 lead that Cleveland State would expand to an 11-point win at 30-19. Cleveland State hit .382 in the game to .207 for the Buckeyes.
Game two began with seven ties, the last at eight-all. A Viking error, an Ashley Kiel (Jr., Allenton, Wis.) ace serve and a block by Meyer and Main gave the Buckeyes an 11-8 lead. After a Kennedy kill (11-9), a CSU service error and kills by Main and Meyer opened a 14-9 Buckeye lead. OSU held the lead and with a Meyer kill won the game, 30-18. The Buckeyes hit .231 for the game to .073 for Cleveland State.
From a one-all tie in game three, a Kiel ace serve and a Meyer kill opened a 3-1 Buckeye lead. OSU took the lead to seven at 13-6. The Vikings rallied to tie the game at 13 and took a 15-14 lead off an OSU error. A Meyer kill tied the game at 15 and with a Kiel ace serve, a Main solo block and a Meyer kill gave OSU an 18-15 lead. The Buckeyes build up a six-point lead at 23-17. At 25-19, a five-point run by Cleveland State cut the lead to OSU lead to 25-24. A Nicole Britenriker (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) kill and an Amanda Miller (Sr., Littleton, Colo.) ace serve made it 27-24, Ohio State. Meyer’s kill won the game for the Buckeyes at 30-26. For the game, Cleveland State hit .242 to OSU’s .182
In a close game four, Ohio State had four match points, the last at 30-29, but could not close out the game. A Danielle Stiefker kill gave Cleveland State the win at 35-33 to tie the match at two games each. The Vikings hit .167 in the game to .135 for Ohio State.
A Buckeye error and a kill by Jenna Maddocks gave Cleveland State a 2-0 lead in game five. A Meyer kill and a Kiel ace tied the game at two. Tied at three, kills by Main and Miller put OSU ahead, 5-3. The Vikings would come within one, at 6-5, but no closer. Leading 12-10, OSU, with kills from Main and Miller reached match-point at 14-10. A Brittany Dahms (So., Byron, Ill.) ace serve gave OSU a 15-10 game win and the match, 3-2. Ohio State hit .261 for the game to .133 for the Vikings.
For the match, Cleveland State hit .196 to OSU’s .187 while the Buckeyes had a 79-61 advantage in kills. Ohio State had an eight to six advantage in ace serves with OSU’s Kiel recording a season-high five. The Buckeyes gave up 10 service errors to eight for the Vikings. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 93-70 advantage in digs with Buckeye Dahms recording a career-high 25. At the net, Cleveland State had an eight to six margin in total blocks. CSU’s Stiefker recorded a match-high six blocks with a solo and five assists. At setter, OSU’s Main had a season-high 54 assists while Mel Snyder collected 47 for the Vikings.
Ohio State now travels to the Bowling Green Invitational where they will face East Carolina (3-2) Friday at 4:30 p.m. and play Saturday matches against Chicago State (0-5) at 10 a.m. and Bowling Green (1-3) at 7 p.m.
