COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (2-1) women’s volleyball team will play at Cleveland State (3-1) Tuesday at 7 p.m. and then travel to the Bowling Green Invitational to play East Carolina (3-2) Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Chicago State (0-5), at 10 a.m. and Bowling Green (1-3), at 7 p.m., Saturday. Last week Ohio State fell 0-3 (15-30, 19-30, 17-30) to top-ranked Nebraska and defeated No. 24 Long Beach State, 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 32-30) at the Sports Imports Classic at Ohio State.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes are coached by Jim Stone, the 2004 Big Ten and the American Volleyball Coaches Association Mideast Region Coach of the Year. Ohio State is 2-1 on the season after falling to No. 1 Nebraska, 0-3) and defeating No. 24 Long Beach State, 3-0, at the Sports Imports Classic. Danielle Meyer (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) leads the Buckeyes in kills per game with a 7.17 per game average. Amanda Miller (Sr., Littleton, Colo.) ranks second at 2.33. Meyer is the top percentage hitter at .326. At setter Marisa Main (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) has a 10.83 assist per game average. Defensively, Brittany Dahms (So., Byron, Ill.) has a team-high 3.50 digs per game average with Main second at 2.17. At the net, Nicole Britenriker (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) has a team-high .83 blocks per game average with Meyer second at .67.
A LOOK AT CLEVELAND STATE
The Vikings are coached by Chuck Voss. Cleveland State is 3-1 overall after winning the Duquesne Invitational last week with 3-0 victories over Rider (30-18, 30-23, 30-17), St. Francis (30-20, 30-14, 30-19) and Duquesne (30-19, 30-27, 30-27). Danielle Siefker was named the Most Valuable Player of the Invitational with Emily Clark and Nickole Kennedy named to the All-Tournament Team. Siefker averages a team-high 3.29 kills per game while hitting a team-high .548 .Setter Mel Snyder averages 10.86 assists per game. Snyder and Jenni Ramminger share team-high honors with six aces each. Defensively, Emily Clark leads the team in digs per game with a 3.86 average. At the net, Siefker has a team-high 1.36 blocks per game average with four solos and 15 assists. Kennedy ranks second at 1.07 with a solo and 14 assists.
OHIO STATE-CLEVELAND STATE SERIES
Ohio State has a 14-10 lead in the series with Cleveland State. The Buckeyes have won the last 11 meetings with the Vikings. In Cleveland, the Buckeyes are 4-3. The teams last played in 2003, a 3-1 (30-16, 27-30, 30-27, 30-10) win in Columbus.
A LOOK AT EAST CAROLINA
The Pirates are coached by Chris Rushing. East Carolina is 3-2 overall. East Carolina played in the Broy Hill Inn Appalachian Classic last week. After defeated North Carolina A&T 3-0 (30-23, 30-20, 36-34), the Pirates lost to Appalachian State 3-1 (29-31, 30-24, 23-30, 31-33). East Carolina closed out the week with a 3-1 (33-31, 30-27, 25-30, 30-17) win over High Point and a 3-0 (30-20, 30-27, 30-23) win over Tennessee Tech. Pam Ferris and Erica Wilson were named to the All-Tournament Team. Ferris has a team-high 4.05 kills per game average with Wilson ranked second at 3.32. Wilson is the top percentage hitter on the squad at .324. Setter Heidi Krug is averaging 12.95 assists per game. Caitlin Daly has a team-high eight ace serves on the season. Defensively, Trish Monroe leads the team with a 4.00 digs per game average with Katie Jannusch second at 3.53. At the net, Jaime Bevan and Kim Jefferson share team-high honors with a .72 blocks per game average with Bevan recording 13 assists and Jefferson, two solos and 11 assists.
OHIO STATE-EAST CAROLINA SERIES
This is the first meeting between the two schools.
A LOOK AT CHICAGO STATE
The Cougars are coached by Lenika Lamar. Chicago State has an 0-5 overall record prior to a Tuesday match at IPFW. Last week at the Blue Demon Invitational Chicago State lost 0-3 to Belmont (24-30, 17-30, 23-30), Valparaiso (22-30, 17-30, 19-30), DePaul (24-30, 21-30, 19-30) and Evansville (26-30, 15-30, 26-30). Shakeila Castile-Jones was named to the Blue Demon Invitational All-Tournament Team.
OHIO STATE-CHICAGO STATE SERIES
Ohio State has won the only two meetings with the Cougars. Both were played in 1974 at neutral sites.
A LOOK AT BOWLING GREEN
The Falcons are coached by Denise Van De Walle. Bowling Green has an overall record of 1-3 prior to Tuesday’s contest against Dayton. Last week in the Illinois-Chicago Invitational, Bowling Green lost 0-3 (20-30, 19-30, 23-30) to Denver and defeated Illinois-Chicago 3-2 (30-27, 33-35, 30-26, 23-30, 18-16). The Falcons then lost 0-3 (12-30, 15-30, 17-30) to the College of Charleston and 2-3 (30-18, 15-30, 30-22, 20-30, 12-15) to James Madison. Bowling Green’s Meghan Mohr leads the team in kills per game with a 2.56 average and the squad’s top percentage hitter at .300. Setter Chrissy Gothke averages 5.50 assists per game with Annie Griffin averaging 3.60. Corrie Mills has a team-high four aces on the season. Defensively, Chelsey Meek has a team-high 2.94 digs per game with Emily Manser averaging 2.60. At the net, Mills has a team-high 1.07 blocks per game average with a solo and 15 assists. Kendra Halm is second in blocking at .94 with two solos and 13 assists.
OHIO STATE-BOWLING GREEN SERIES
The Buckeyes lead the series with Bowling Green, 9-0. The squads last played in 2003, a 3-0 (30-26, 30-25, 30-27) Buckeye win. The only match played at Bowling Green was in 1982, a 3-2 (13-15, 15-6, 15-8, 9-15, 15-5) OSU win.
LAST WEEK AGAINST NEBRASKA
No. 12 Ohio State fell 0-3 to No. 1 Nebraska (3-0) (30-15, 30-19, 30-17) in the first day of the Sports Imports Classic. OSU’s Danielle Meyer scored a team-high 18 kills (.227) for the Buckeyes while Cornhusker Christina Houghtelling had a team-high 10 kills. Nebraska hit .427 for the match to .095 for the Buckeyes. The Cornhuskers had a 43-35 advantage and picked up nine points on ace serve to zero for OSU. Each squad gave up six service errors. Defensively, Nebraska had a 35-29 margin in digs with Jennifer Saleaumua recording a match-high 13 for the Cornhuskers. At the net, Nebraska posted 15.5 team blocks to three for the Buckeyes. Sarah Pavan had a match-high 12 blocks on one solo and 11 assists while Melissa Elmer had 11 assist blocks.
LAST WEEK AGAINST LONG BEACH STATE
No. 12 Ohio State needed five match points in three to post a 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 32-30) victory over No. 24 Long Beach State (3-1) Saturday night in St. John Arena in the second day of play in the 2005 Sports Imports Classic. Ohio State’s Danielle Meyer recorded a career-high 29 points against the 49ers with a career-high 25 kills (.417), an ace serve and four total blocks (two solos and two assists). OSU’s Amanda Miller recorded 12.5 points with 12 kills and an assist block. Long Beach State’s Robin Miramontes scored a team-high 10 points for the 49ers with nine kills and two assist blocks. Long Beach State stopped four match points before a 49er error at 31-30 ended the match. For the match, Ohio State hit .257 while Long Beach State hit .172. The Buckeyes had a 58-44 margin in kills and had a four to two advantage in ace serves. OSU gave up 10 service errors to four for the 49ers. Defensively, Long Beach State had a 57-43 advantage in digs with 49er Nicole Vargas and OSU’s Brittany Dahms sharing match-high honors with 14 digs each. At the net, Ohio State edged Long Beach State, nine to eight in total blocks with OSU’s Meyer (2-2) and Alexis Crimes (0-4) each recording four total blocks.
MEYER POSTS CAREER NUMBERS AGAINST LONG BEACH STATE
With career-highs of 29.0 points and 25 kills, Danielle Meyer helped Ohio State to a 3-0 win over No. 24 Long Beach State. Her previous high for kills was 25 and for points, 26.5, both coming against Toledo in the opening match of the season. Meyer hit .417 against the 49ers adding six digs, two solo blocks, two assist blocks and an ace serve. She had 18 kills (.227) against Nebraska and now has scored double-figure kills in her last six matches and 20 in her career.
MILLER HAS SEASON-HIGH 12 KILLS AGAINST THE 49ERS
Amanda Miller recorded a season-high 12 kills Saturday against Long Beach State. Her previous high this season was seven against Toledo. Against the 49ers, Miller hit .290, adding two digs and an assist block.
VOLLEYBALL TO HONOR LAURA DAVIS AND Stacey Gordon
All-Americans Laura Davis and Stacey Gordon were honored prior to the Ohio State-Nebraska match as their All-American banners will be put on display in St. John Arena. Davis played from 1991 to 1994. She was a two-time All-American (93, 94) and was the 1994 AVCA National Player of the Year. Gordon played from 2001 to 2004. She is Ohio State’s only four-time All-American, a two-time Big Ten Player of the Year and the 2004 AVCA Co-National Player of the Year and the Asics/Volleyball Magazine Player of the Year.
ATHLETICS HONORS Stacey Gordon AS THE 2004 FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Ohio State volleyball All-American Stacey Gordon was honored at the third quarter break of the Ohio State-Miami football game as the 2004 Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year. Gordon was named ASICS/Volleyball Magazine 2004 National Player of the Year as well as the 2004 American Volleyball Coaches Association Co-National Player of the Year while leading her team to a 30-4 record and a sixth-place national ranking. She took home many national honors, including AVCA first team All-America, ASICS/Volleyball Magazine first team All-America, AVCA National Player of the Week and CoSIDA Academic All-District second team. She was the Big Ten Player of the Year and a first team all-conference selection. Gordon, Ohio State women’s volleyball’s only four-time All-American, set the NCAA record for kills per game with 7.08 in 2004. She also is a four-time All-Big Ten selection and holds Big Ten records for kills in a season and career kills. Gordon set the school record for career digs and is third all-time on the NCAA Division I career kills list. She is a four-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete, three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and was a Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor finalist. Gordon also was named Ohio State Female Athlete of the year for 2002-03.
BUCKEYES HAVE FOUR TELEVISED MATCHES
Ohio State is scheduled to appear in four televised matches this season. The Buckeyes will appear twice in the eight regional broadcasts scheduled by Comcast SportsNet Chicago. OSU will host Purdue Friday, Sept. 23 in a match that will be delayed telecast Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. ET. Ohio State’s Friday, Oct. 21 match at Minnesota will be delayed telecast Saturday, Oct. 22 at 5:30 p.m. ET. The Buckeyes have two additional televised matches this season. OSU will host Wisconsin Saturday, Oct. 29 in match with will be delayed telecast by ESPN2 Sunday, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m. ET and will play at Penn State, at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 2 in a live CSTV (College Sports Television) broadcast.
OSU REMAINS 12TH IN CSTV/AVCA COACHES POLL
The CSTV (College Sports Television/AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll released this week by the AVCA has Ohio State ranked 12th nationally. The Buckeyes received 823 votes. OSU finished the 2004 season with a 30-4 overall record and was ranked sixth in the final 2004 poll. The Buckeyes are one of four Big Ten squads ranked in the top-12 of the poll. Others include Penn State at fourth, Minnesota fifth and Wisconsin ninth. Purdue, Illinois and Northwestern also received votes.
BUCKEYE CLASSIC FEATURES OFF-CAMPUS MATCHES
Ohio State’s Buckeye Classic featuring Brigham Young, Duke and Pittsburgh will begin play in St. John Arena on Friday, Sept. 16 with Brigham Young playing Duke at 5 p.m. and Ohio State hosting Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. The Saturday, Sept. 17 consolation match at 5 p.m. and the championship match a 7 p.m. will be played at Centerburg High School in Centerburg, Ohio. The change is necessary because the Ohio State-San Diego State football game has been moved to 3:30 p.m. and will be telecast by ABC-TV.
MAIN AND STEVENS NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN TEAM
The Big Ten Conference announced that Ohio State setter Marisa Main (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) and outside hitter Ami Stevens (So., Centerburg, Ohio) have been named to the 2005 Preseason All-Big Ten Volleyball Team by a vote of the conference coaches. The Buckeyes were picked to finish fourth in the coaches’ preseason poll. Penn State was picked to finish first with Minnesota second and Wisconsin third.
HEAD COACH Jim Stone
Jim Stone is in his 24th season at Ohio State. He has a 473-262 record with the Buckeyes and is 263-151 in Big Ten play. His squads have won Big Ten Championships in 1989, 1991 and 1994 and finished tied for second in 2004 being named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. He was the 1991 Volleyball Monthly National Coach of the Year and the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1989, 1991, 1994 and 2004. Under Stone, Ohio State has participated in the NCAA championship in 13 of the last 16 years, advancing to the national semifinals in 1991 and 1994. Stone’s coaching career record includes three years at Wyoming (1979-1981). His 26-year career record is 523-304.
JOBST AND DIPRONIO TO BE INDUCTED INTO OSU ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
Outside hitter Gabriele Jobst (1991-94) and setter Audrey DiPronio (1988-90) will be inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall Of Fame, Friday, Sept. 16 and will be honored at halftime of the Ohio State-San Diego State football game on Saturday, Sept. 17. Previous women’s volleyball players in the Hall of Fame include Karen Alsbrook (1977-79), Lisa Bettio (1982-85), Laura Davis (1991-94), Holly O’Leary (1987-90), Mary Ormsby (1977-80) Vanessa Wouters (1996-97) and Leisa Wissler (1988-91).
STEVENS SPENDS THE SUMMER WITH US JUNIOR NATIONAL TEAM
Outside hitter Ami Stevens was selected to the 12-player United State Junior National Team that traveled to Turkey to play in the FIVB Junior Women’s U-20 Volleyball World Championship, July 23-28. The squad finished 1-4 in pool play. She had been in training at the United States Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. since July 8. Stevens was also selected to the team in 2004.

#1 Rebecca Kastein (Libero/Defensive Specialist, 5-8, Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) – 2005–season-high 10 digs against Toledo / started 22 matches at libero and three at defensive specialist in 2004 – averaged 3.27 digs per game with 18 matches with double-figure digs – career-high 29 digs at Minnesota in the NCAA Regional Championship match.
#2 Brittany Dahms (Libero/Defensive Specialist, 5-5, So., Bryon, Ill.) – 2005– started at libero against Nebraska and Long Beach State – season-high 14 digs against Long Beach State / started seven matches at libero and three as a defensive specialist – averaged 2.23 digs per game with a career-high 19 against Michigan – double-figure digs in 10 matches.
#3 Anna Tengnas (Libero/Defensive Specialist, 5-5, Jr., Hyletbruk, Sweden) – 2005– played against Nebraska recording two assists and a dig / played in 16 matches with three starts at libero in 2004 – averaged 1.43 digs per game in 2004 with a season-high of nine against Dayton and North Carolina.
