COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (2-1) women’s volleyball team needed five match points in three to post a 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 32-30) victory over No. 24 Long Beach State (3-1) Saturday night in St. John Arena in the second day of play in the 2005 Sports Imports Classic. Ohio State’s Danielle Meyer (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded a career-high 29 points against the 49ers with a career-high 25 kills (.417), an ace serve and four total blocks (two solos and two assists). OSU’s Amanda Miller (Sr., Littleton, Colo.) recorded 12.5 points with 12 kills and an assist block. Long Beach State’s Robin Miramontes scored a team-high 10 points for the 49ers with nine kills and two assist blocks.
Long Beach State stopped four match points before a 49er error at 31-30 ended the match. For the match, Ohio State hit .257 while Long Beach State hit .172. The Buckeyes had a 58-44 margin in kills and had a four to two advantage in ace serves. OSU gave up 10 service errors to four for the 49ers. Defensively, Long Beach State had a 57-43 advantage in digs with 49er Nicole Vargas and OSU’s Brittany Dahms (So., Byron, Ill.) sharing match-high honors with 14 digs each. At the net, Ohio State edged Long Beach State, nine to eight in total blocks with OSU’s Meyer (2-2) and Alexis Crimes (0-4) each recording four total blocks.
The Buckeyes begin a week of travel as they will play at Cleveland State Tuesday and play Friday and Saturday at the Bowling Green Tournament.
NO. 1 NEBRASKA DEFEATS MICHIGAN, 30-22, 30-19, 30-21
Cornhusker Sara Pavan scored a match-high 16.5 points as No. 1 Nebraska (4-0) defeated Michigan (0-3), 3-0 (30-22, 30-19, 20-21) in the second day of play at the 2005 Sports Imports Classic. Pavan posted a match-high 15 kills (.591) adding an ace serve and three assist blocks. Dani Mancuso added 15 points with 10 kills (.348), two ace serves and six assist blocks. Michigan’s Danielle Pflum recorded a team-high 12 points for Michigan with 12 kills (.391) while Lyndsay Miller added 10.5 points with nine kills (.200) and three assist blocks.
Nebraska hit .409 in the match to .163 for Michigan. The Cornhuskers had a 55-38 advantage in kills while each squad had three ace serves. Michigan gave up nine service errors to six for Nebraska. Defensively, the Cornhuskers had a 40-36 edge in digs with Michigan’s Stesha Selsky recording a match-high 12. At the net, Nebraska had a 12.5 to three margin in team blocks with Melissa Elmer posting a match-high seven assist blocks. Elmer was named the 2005 Sports Imports Classic Most Valuable Player.
