No. 14 Women’s Volleyball Defeats Pittsburgh, 3-1, Faces Brigham Young Saturday – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 14th-ranked Ohio State (7-1) women’s volleyball team defeated Pittsburgh (7-5), 3-1 (30-19, 30-24, 31-33, 30-28) in the semifinals of the Buckeye Classic Friday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Ami Stevens (So., Centerburg, Ohio) scored a match-high 20.5 points with Danielle Meyer (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) adding 19.5. Stevens had a team-high 19 kills, an ace serve and an assist block and added 15 digs. Meyer had 16 kills, two aces and three assist blocks while adding 13 digs. Pittsburgh’s Diana Andreyko scored a team-high 20 points on 20 kills with Jessica Moses adding 12.5 points with 10 kills and five assist blocks.
Ohio State hit .196 for the match to .153 for Pittsburgh. The Buckeyes had a 70-53 advantage in kills and a six to three margin in ace serves. The Panthers gave up 10 service errors to six for OSU. Defensively Ohio State had a 71-65 edge in digs with Pittsburgh’s Megan McGrane collecting a match-high 28. At the net, the Panthers out blocked OSU, 13 to six with Allie Cherven posting a match-high seven total blocks with two solos and five assists. OSU setter Marisa Main (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) recorded a match-high 54 assists with Pitt’s Nicole Taurence collecting 44.
After leading 2-0, Pittsburgh rallied to win game three, 33-31. The Panthers held the lead most of game four and were ahead, 28-26 when kills from Stevens and Nicole Britenriker (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) tied the game at 28. After a Pittsburgh time out, back-to-back kills from Britenriker closed out the game at 30-28, giving the Buckeyes a 3-1 win.
Brigham Young holds off Duke in five games

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After Duke (5-2) rallied to send the match to a fifth game, Brigham Young (6-0) won the match, 3-2 (30-24, 30-24, 19-30, 24-30, 15-10) in the first semifinal of the Buckeye Classic. BYU’s Erica Lott scored a team-high 22.5 points (22 kills, 1 assist block) with Chelsea Goodman adding 20.5 points (19 kill, 1 ace, 1 assist block) in the two hour, 21 minute marathon. Duke’s Carrie DeMange posted a match-high 24.5 points (22 kills, 5 assist blocks) while Sam Fisher added 13 points (11 kills, one solo and two assist blocks).
Brigham Young hit .193 for the match to .170 for Duke. The Cougars had a 70-56 advantage in kills while Duke had a 5-3 edge in ace serves. The Cougars gave up 17 service errors to nine for Duke. Defensively, Brigham Young had a 77-70 margin in digs with Cougar Lindsey Evans recording a match-high 27. At the net, Duke had a seven to 5.5 edge in team blocks with DeMange recording a match-high five assist blocks. BYU’s Lauren Evans posted 60 assists in the match while Duke’s Ali Hausfeld recorded 44.
Brigham Young out hit Duke, .267 to .104 in game one and .278 to .097 in game two. The Blue Devils reversed the trend the next two games as Duke hit .244 to .091 in game three and .275 to .093 in game four. The Cougars responded in game five hitting .316 while holding Duke to .062.
The Buckeye Classic continues Saturday at Centerburg High School with Duke facing Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. in the consolation match and Ohio State and Brigham Young playing in the championship match at 7 p.m.
