No. 12 Women’s Volleyball Holds Off Bowling Green, 3-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (6-1) women’s volleyball team defeated Bowling Green (4-4), 3-2 (30-23, 30-24, 27-30, 26-30, 15-9) to capture the Bowling Green Invitational Championship Saturday night. OSU’s Danielle Meyer (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) had 31 points and Ami Stevens (So., Centerburg, Ohio) added 27.5 for the Buckeyes. Meyer recorded 25 kills (.388), two ace serves, seven blocks (one solo and six assists) and 17 digs with Stevens collecting match-highs of 26 kills (.352) and 18 digs, adding an ace serve and an assist block. Bowling Green’s Emily Manser scored a team-high 18.5 points with 16 kills, a solo block and three assists with Corrie Mills adding 16 points with 10 kills, two ace serves and eight assist blocks.
From a 4-4 tie in game one, two Meyer kills gave the Buckeyes the lead at 6-4 and never trailed. OSU built an 11-point lead at 23-12 and with an Amanda Miller (Sr., Littleton, Colo.) kill won the game, 30-23. Ohio State hit .317 in the game to .116 for Bowling Green.
Ohio State opened game two with the first three points off an Ashley Kiel (Jr., Allenton, Wis.) ace serve, a Meyer-Stevens block and a Stevens kill. Leading 8-6, Bowling Green tied the game at eight with a Buckeye error and a Meghan Mohr kill. Service errors by both teams and a Kiel kill moved the score to 10-9, OSU. A seven-point scoring run by OSU opened up a 17-9 Buckeye lead. OSU won the game at 30-24 off a Falcon error. The Buckeyes hit .256 for the game to .054 for Bowling Green.
Game three saw 14 ties and four lead changes with OSU holding a 25-22 lead before a six-point Falcon scoring run put Bowling Green ahead, 28-25. A Meyer kill cut the margin to 28-26 but a Mohr-Mills block set game point at 29-26. A Falcon error made it 29-27 but a Ashlei Nofzinger kill won the game for Bowling Green at 30-27. BG hit .244 in the game to .238 for OSU. Game four saw the Falcons take a 3-2 lead off a Kendra Helm kill and never trail again in the game. OSU cut the BG lead to one at 26-25, but could come no closer as the Falcons won the game, 30-26, off an OSU error. The Falcons hit .333 in the game to .268 for OSU.
Bowling Green took an early 2-0 lead in game five but OSU tied the game at three. A Miller-Nicole Britenriker (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) and two Stevens’ kill put OSU ahead for good at 6-3. The Buckeyes won the game off a Falcon error at 15-9. OSU hit .524 for the game to .250 for Bowling Green.
For the match Ohio State hit .299 to .200 for Bowling Green. OSU had an 84-64 margin in kills and edged the Falcons, 6-5 in ace serves. OSU gave up 11 service errors to 10 for the Falcons. Defensively, Ohio State had an 86-63 advantage in digs while the Falcons collected 16.5 team blocks to OSU’s 11. OSU’s Stevens and Meyer were named to the All-Tournament team.
Ohio State will host Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. next Friday in the Buckeye Classic in St. John Arena. Brigham Young will face Duke in the 5 p.m. match. Saturday’s matches will be played at Centerburg High School in Centerburg, Ohio with a consolation and championship match. The Buckeyes will play at 7 p.m. Saturday.
