COLUMBUS, Ohio – Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ont.) has been named Ohio State’s 2005 Female Athlete of the Year. The award was voted on by Ohio State athletics administrators and was based on the 2004-05 season only.
Gordon now will represent Ohio State on the Big Ten ballot to select the Suzy Favor Female Athlete of the Year. Each school in the Big Ten nominates one female student-athlete and a panel of media selects the winner, which will be announced later this summer.
Gordon was named 2004 American Volleyball Coaches Association Co-National Player of the Year as well as the ASICS/Volleyball Magazine 2004 National Player of the Year while leading her team to a 30-4 record and a sixth-place finish nationally. She took home many national honors, including AVCA first team All-America, ASICS/Volleyball Magazine first team All-America, AVCA National Player of the Week and CoSIDA Academic All-District second team. She was the Big Ten Player of the Year and a first team all-conference selection. Gordon, Ohio State women’s volleyball’s only four-time All-American, set the NCAA record for kills per game with 7.08 in 2004. She also is a four-time All-Big Ten selection and holds Big Ten records for kills in a season and career kills. Gordon set the school record for career digs and is third all-time on the NCAA Division I career kills list. She is a four-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete, three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and was a Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor finalist. Gordon also was named Ohio State Female Athlete of the year for 2002-03, making her only the third female in school history to win the award twice (Katie Smith, Basketball, 1994 and 1996, Donica Merriman, Track/Field, 2000 and 2001) and the sixth student-athlete (Jim Jackson, Basketball, 1991 and 1992, Blaine Wilson, Gymnastics, 1995 and 1997, Jamie Natalie, Gymnastics, 2000 and 2001) overall to do so.
Other volleyball student-athletes that have been honored include Holly O’Leary (1991), Leisa Wissler (1992), Laura Davis (1995), Vanessa Wouters (1998) and Stacey Gordon (2003).
