COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (1-1) women’s lacrosse squad begins league play in the American Lacrosse Conference Friday, March 11 when the Buckeyes host sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins (1-1, 1-0) at 6 p.m. OSU then faces Virginia Tech (1-1) Sunday, March 13 at 1 p.m. Both contests are scheduled to be played in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The head coach for the Buckeyes is Sue Stimmel. Ohio State is 1-1 on the season after losing a three-overtime, 8-7, decision at Pennsylvania Saturday.
OHIO STATE BY THE NUMBERS
Ohio State’s Kelly Kremer (Fr., Kennett Square, Pa.) has a team-high seven points for the Buckeyes with seven goals. Brandie Williams (Sr., Hatboro, Pa.), KC Carter (Jr., Birchrunville, Pa.), Ashley Evans (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) and Kristen Slahor (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.) have three points each. Evans has three goals on the season while Williams and Carter have two goals and an assist. Slahor has a goal and a team-high two assists. Regina Oliver (Sr., Pottstown, Pa.) has a team-high nine ground balls with Williams second with eight. Kremer and Evans share team-high honors with four draw controls each. Oliver, Evans and Williams have three caused turnovers each to share the team lead. In goal, Kim Hastings (Jr., Sewickley, Pa.) is 1-1 on the season with both starts. She has a 4.80 goals against average and an .565 saves percentage.
A LOOK AT JOHNS HOPKINS
The head coach for the Blue Jays is Janine Tucker. Sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins is 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the American Lacrosse Conference. The Blue Jays opened the season with a 15-4 victory at home over Davidson on Feb. 26 and lost at Princeton, March 5, 8-5.
JOHNS HOPKINS BY THE NUMBERS
Mary Key has a team-high 12 points for the Blue Jays. She has team-highs of eight goals and four assists in the two games played. Meagan Voight and Anne Crisafulli are tied for second in points with four each. Both have three goals and an assist. In draw controls, Kadie Stamper has a team-high five with Key recording four. Kelley Putnam and Lacey-Leigh Hentz share team-high honors in ground balls with six each. Hentz in the team leader in caused turnovers with six. Putnam and Stamper rank second with three each. In goal, Lauren Riddick has started both games and has a 1-1 record. She has a 6.50 goals against average and a .409 saves percentage.
OHIO STATE – JOHNS HOPKINS SERIES
Johns Hopkins has a 2-1 lead in the series with Ohio State. The Blue Jays won home matches in 2002 (11-10) and 2004 (13-5). Ohio State defeated Johns Hopkins, 9-6, in Columbus in 2003.
THE LAST GAME AGAINST JOHNS HOPKINS
In 2004, 19th-ranked Ohio State dropped a 13-5 decision at No. 17 Johns Hopkins Sunday afternoon at Homewood Field. Amy Tulk scored a team-high two goals for the Buckeyes with Caroline Weatherill, Ashley Evans and Kelyn Laws adding single goals. John Hopkins’ Mary Key scored a game-high five goals for the Blue Jays with Steph Janice adding two. Down 5-1 at half, OSU would close to within three (8-5) with nine minutes left. Johns Hopkins responded with five straight goals for the 13-8 final score. In goal, OSU’s Kim Hastings started the game and played the first 30 minutes. She gave up five goals while recording four saves in taking the loss. Taryn Bowen played the second 30 minutes for the Buckeyes, giving up eight goals while recording five saves. Johns Hopkins’ Lauren Riddick took the win in goal. She gave up five goals and recorded seven saves.
A LOOK AT VIRGINIA TECH
The head coach for the Hokies is Tami Riley. Virginia Tech has a 1-1 overall record on the season prior to Friday’s match at Ohio. The Hokies won, 11-8, last Saturday at George Mason and dropped a 13-8 decision against St. Bonaventure Monday in a game played at James Madison University.
VIRGINIA TECH BY THE NUMBERS
In the Hokies 11-8 win over George Mason, Lindsay Pieper and Britt Faulkner each scored three goals. Natasha Fuchs added a game-high three assists. Kady McBrearty netted the game-winner (9-8) with 4:30 left on the clock. Faulkner would score two of her three goals late in the contest for the final 11-8 margin. In the 13-8 loss to St. Bonaventure, Stephanie Jones scored a team-high three goals for the Hokies. Virginia Tech trailed, 5-3, at halftime before the Hokies scored four of the next five goals, including two from Jones to take a 7-6 lead at the 40:36 mark. St. Bonaventure tied the game at seven and at eight all, scored five unanswered goals for the 13-8 final score. In goal for the Hokies, Nikki Schiavone recorded 14 saves for Virginia Tech.
OHIO STATE – VIRGINIA TECH SERIES
Virginia Tech has a 7-2 advantage in the series with Ohio State. Both teams have won two matches in Columbus with the Buckeyes winning 11-5 in 2001 and 14-5 in 2004. Last season in Blacksburg, Virginia Tech won 10-6.
THE LAST GAME AGAINST VIRGINIA TECH
In 2004, Ohio State fell to Virginia Tech, 10-6 after the Hokies built up an 8-1 first half lead. OSU responded with five consecutive scores in the second half to close to within two at 8-6. Virginia Tech added two goals for the final 10-6 score. OSU’s Ashley Evans scored twice for the Buckeyes with KC Carter, Amy Tulk, Brandie Williams and Natale Miller each adding a goal. For Virginia Tech, Britt Faulkner scored three goals with Kate Threadgold and Lindsey Welch adding two each. Kim Hastings took the loss in goal for OSU, playing the first 30 minutes. Taryn Bowen played the second half. Each had seven saves. Hokie Jamie McGraw had 11 saves in the game.
REVIEWING THE PENN GAME
Ohio State fell, 8-7, in three overtimes to Penn Saturday in Philadelphia. Kelly Kremer had three goals for OSU. The Buckeyes trailed 6-4 when goals by Kremer (43:57) and Regina Oliver (55:52) tied the game at six and send it into overtime. Kremer’s third goal gave OSU a 7-6 lead but Penn countered with a goal 20 seconds later by Allison Ambrozy (64:55) to tie the game at seven. After a scoreless second overtime period, Penn, on a goal by Ali Ryan (69:39) scored 39 seconds into the third overtime to take the win. Kristen Slahor, Lindsay Weiner and Ashley Evans complete the scoring for OSU. Oliver had a team-high seven ground balls in the game with a draw control and a caused turnover.
KREMER HAS THREE GOALS AGAINST PENN
Kelly Kremer scored a team-high three goals in the game Penn game to lead the Buckeyes in goals scored for the second straight game. She added three ground balls, one draw control and a caused turnover against the Quakers.
OLIVER HAS A TEAM-HIGH SEVEN GROUND BALLS AGAINST THE QUAKERS
In the Penn game, Regina Oliver recorded a team-high seven ground balls against the Quakers. She also contributed a goal, one draw control and one caused turnover. Oliver is Ohio State’s career leader in ground balls (175) and caused turnovers (153) and ranks second in draw controls with 97.
SLAHOR AND WEINER POST TWO POINTS EACH AGAINST PENN
Kristen Slahor and Lindsay Weiner (So., Eldersburg, Md.) accounted for two points each in the game against Penn. Each scored a goal and added an assist against the Quakers. Slahor added four ground balls and a caused turnover in the game while Weiner scored her goal on a free position attempt.
WILLIAMS RECORDS FIVE GROUND BALLS AGAINST PENN
In the Penn game, Brandie Williams had five ground balls against the Quakers, adding two draw controls and a caused turnover. Williams is second on the squad in ground balls with eight, shares team-high honors in caused turnovers with three and is tied for second in draw controls with three. Williams ranks ninth in Ohio State career caused turnovers with 50 and needs six to pass No. 8 Kelly Cook (2001-04) with 55.
OLIVER NOW FIFTH IN OSU CAREER POINTS
With her game-tying goal against Penn to send the game into overtime, Regina Oliver now has 134 career points and has moved to fifth on the OSU career list. Oliver now has 98 goals and 36 assists. Oliver needs five points to pass No. 4 Celeste Cianfrani (1998-00) with 138 points (87-51).
CARTER NOW TIED FOR FOURTH IN OSU CAREER DRAW CONTROLS
KC Carter recorded three draw controls against Duquesne and now has 53 in her career. That total moves her from seventh to a tie for fourth in OSU career draw controls with Shannon Wilson (2000-03). She passed Caroline Weatherill (2001-04) and Alexia Vogler (2000-03) who were tied for fifth with 51. Carter needs 12 draw controls to pass No. 3 Megan Mirick (1992-02) who has 64.
HASTINGS RANKS FIFTH IN CAREER SAVES
A five-save performance against Penn by Kim Hastings gives her 110 career saves, ranking fifth on the OSU career list. Hastings needs 50 saves to pass No. 4 Jamie Bauer (197-99) who has 159. Hastings has a career 8.66 goals against average that ranks fourth for the Buckeyes.
OLIVER AN INSIDE LACROSSE PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN
Ohio State’s Regina Oliver has been named a first team preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse as announced on their web site.

Regina Oliver has been named to the 2005 Preseason All-Conference Team of the American Lacrosse Conference by a vote of the league’s head coaches. She is a three-time first team ALC all-conference selection and was the 2002 ALC Rookie of the Year and the 2003 ALC Player of the Year. BUCKEYES PICKED TO FINISH SIXTH IN CONFERENCE PLAY
Ohio State has been picked to finish sixth in the ALC. The Buckeyes were 1-5 last season in the ALC, finishing sixth. Northwestern was picked to finish first by the coaches. The projected order of finish follows (first place votes): 1. Northwestern 47 (5); 2. Johns Hopkins 42 (2); 3. Penn State 31; Vanderbilt 31; 5. Ohio 19; 6. Ohio State 18; 7. Davidson 8.
OLIVER NAMED TO PRESEASON TEWAARATON AWARD WATCHLIST
Regina Oliver has been named to the Spring 2005 preseason watchlist of the Tewaaraton Award Foundation. The award, considered the Heisman Award of lacrosse, will be voted upon by coaches and narrowed as the season progresses, ultimately reaching a final list of five women and five men who will constitute the award’s finalist. Oliver, a midfielder for the Buckeyes, is a two-time Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association/U.S. Lacrosse All-American receiving second team honors in 2003 and a third team selection in 2004. She is a three-time American Lacrosse Conference first team selection and was named the 2002 ALC Rookie of the Year and the 2003 ALC Player of the Year.

Kelly Kremer was honored by both InsideLacrosse.com and WomensLacrosse.com after her four-goal performance against Duquesne last Saturday. InsideLacrosse.com named her an honorable mention player of the week while WomensLacrosse.com named her to their honor roll. Playing in her first game as a Buckeye, Kremer scored four goals in six shots including one for two in free position attempts. She added three draw controls and two ground balls in the contest.
JESSE OWENS MEMORIAL STADIUM, HOME OF THE BUCKEYES
The 8,000-seat Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium arguably is one of the finest multi-sport facilities in the country, hosting track and field and lacrosse in the spring and soccer in the fall. Over the last three years, the Buckeyes are 14-7 (.667) at the facility.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her 10th season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 74-62 at Ohio State and is 150-80 in her 16-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
BUCKEYES HAVE TWO APPEARANCES ON CSTV THIS SEASON
Ohio State will have its final two regular season games telecast by College Sports Television (CSTV) this season. OSU’s game at Northwestern Thursday, April 5 (4 p.m. start) will be a delayed telecast that will be seen at 8 p.m. that night. The Buckeyes will face Notre Dame Saturday, April 7 in a live telecast at 1 p.m.
