Three Buckeyes Win Event Championships at 2005 Big Ten Men’s Gymnastics Individual Event Finals – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three members of the No. 1 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team won an event title at the 2005 Big Ten Individual Event Finals Saturday evening at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Big Ten individual event championships capped off a successful weekend for the Buckeyes as they also were crowned the 2005 Big Ten Champions following team and all-around competition Friday night.
Senior co-captain Randy Monahan (Elizabethtown, Pa./Central Pa. Academy of Gym.) earned his fourth-career All-Big Ten selection after his first-place performance on rings. Monahan scored a 9.687 on the apparatus a night after securing his third-career Big Ten selection in the all-around (55.3) during the team and all-around competition. Freshman DJ Bucher (Mason, Ohio/Queen City Gym.) continued his success on parallel bars, winning the event with a score of 9.737. Ronald Ferris defended his conference high bar crown (Jr., Austintown, Ohio/Ohio Gym. Institute) with his tally of 9.862.
OSU maintained its dominance on high bar, sweeping the Top 3 spots on the event. Monahan finished a close second behind Ferris, recording a 9.85 and Willie Ito (So., Huntington Beach, Calif./South Coast Gym.) rounded out the Top 3 with his third-place 9.725. Ferris and Cody Trobaugh (Sr., Dallas, Texas/Houston Gym. Academy) were the top Buckeye scorers on pommel horse and vault, finishing fourth (9.587) and sixth (9.062), respectively. Trobaugh also finished fifth on rings (9.625), while Nicholaus Searcy (So., Dublin, Ohio/Hocking Valley Gym. Center) was fourth on parallel bars, notching a 9.225. Following the conclusion of the meet, OSU head coach Miles Avery was named 2005 Big Ten Coach of the Year. This is Avery’s third league accolade. He won back-to-back coach of the year honors in 2001 and 2002.
The Buckeyes will wrap up the 2005 season when they travel to West Point, N.Y., for the 2005 NCAA championships April 7-9 on the campus of the Army Black Knights.
