COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team (2-4, 0-0 GWLL) was defeated by No. 20 Brown (3-1, 0-0 Ivy League), 10-8, Saturday in Providence, R.I. The Buckeyes led after the first quarter, 3-1, but the Bears outscored OSU over the next two quarters, 8-1, (including seven consecutive goals) to take the lead and secure the win.
The Buckeyes were led by junior Justin Doran (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East), who had three points on a goal and two assists. Kyle Olson (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Tom Randisi (Sr., Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) each chipped in two goals in the game, while Kevin Buchanan (Fr., Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall) and Andrew Bender (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) each had two assists. Ben Wolff (Jr., Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall), the Buckeyes’ leading scorer, had a goal and an assist for two points.
Brown opened the scoring with a goal by Chris Mucciolo just 37 seconds into the game. OSU responded with three goals to close out the first quarter, with Doran having a hand in each. Chris Brown (Sr., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto), set up by Doran, scored with 5:34 remaining, followed by a Doran goal (assisted by Buchanan) with 3:19 left. Doran then assisted on Randisi’s goal with 2:10 remaining in the quarter.
The Bears went on a seven-goal run (and scored nine of the next 10 goals) to put the game out of reach for OSU. Brown scored at 13:24 and 12:49 of the second quarter to tie the game at three before Dave Madeira put the Bears ahead for good (4-3) with 5:36 remaining in the half. Madeira ended the first-half scoring with a goal with 1:43 on the clock to send the Bears into the lockerroom at halftime with a 5-3 lead.
Brown scored the first thee goals of the third quarter to extend its lead to 8-3. Mucciolo scored at 11:28, followed by a Chazz Woodson goal 40 seconds later. After a Will McGettigan goal at 9:54, Olson stopped the Bears’ seven-goal run with a goal at 8:51. Woodson responded to the Olson tally with a man-up goal at 4:56 to put the Bears ahead, 9-4, at the end of three.
Woodson scored the Bears’ last goal of the game with 3:57 remaining in the game. OSU came back with four goals to close out the game for the 10-8 final. Wolff, with Buchanan assisting, scored 35 seconds after Woodson (3:22). Olson added his second of the game on an assist from Wolff with 1:27 remaining, followed by a Craig Nolan (Jr., Plano, Texas (Jesuit College Prep) score (assisted by Bender) 14 seconds later. Randisi (with an assist from Gary Bining (Delta, British Columbia/Delta Secondary) ended the scoring with 39 seconds left on the clock.
The Buckeyes had 37 shots in the game, while Brown had 38. Buckeye freshman goalie Mike Rimmer (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) made 11 saves in the loss. The Bears’ Nick Gentilesco had 19 saves in the win.
The Buckeyes were held scoreless on three extra-man chances, while Brown went 1-for-4.
Ohio State returns to action when it travels to Durham, N.C., to take on Duke at 1 p.m. April 2 in the second of three consecutive road games for the Buckeyes.
