COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 5 Ohio State first varsity eight defeated No. 6 Virginia and No. 17 Duke at the fifth annual ACC/Big Ten Duals Saturday at Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River in Columbus, Ohio. The regatta marked the Buckeyes’ first competition of the 2005 season.
Overall, Ohio State’s varsity squad finished the day 4-6 and the novice team went 3-1. On the day, Virginia led all four teams posting a 12-4 record. Ohio State tallied a 7-7 record, while Michigan went 6-8 and Duke ended the day 0-8.
In the morning session, Ohio State swept Duke in all four races, including the first and second varsity eights and in the first and second novice races. In the afternoon, the Buckeyes first varsity eight and first novice eight swept Virginia, while the other four Buckeye boats fell to the Cavaliers.
“I felt very good about all the races,” Andy Teitelbaum, Ohio State head coach, said. “We handled the adversity today by showing a lot of poise and strength. The first varsity eight finishing 2-0 was a huge part of the regatta. We need to continue to get faster, because next week we will face another Top 5 crew (Michigan). Virginia was very good and deep. Their two eight boats are relatively the same speed, so we were fortunate to win.”
