COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 15th-ranked Ohio State (4-1 overall, 2-0 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad hosts Cornell (1-2), Thursday, March 22 at 1 p.m. The game is scheduled to be played in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. OSU then travels to Annapolis, Md. to face fourth-ranked North Carolina (6-2) Friday, March 25 at 5 p.m. and ninth-ranked Maryland (5-3) Sunday, March 27 at 2:30 p.m. The games are part of the ALC/Atlantic Coast Conference Challenge, host by the U.S. Naval Academy and played in the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The head coach for the 15th-ranked Buckeyes is Sue Stimmel. Ohio State is 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in the American Lacrosse Conference. Last week Ohio State won at home, 9-8, against Ohio.
OHIO STATE BY THE NUMBERS
Ohio State’s Kelly Kremer has a team-high 22 points for the Buckeyes with 19 goals and three assists. KC Carter (Jr., Birchrunville, Pa.) ranks second with 12 points (10-2) with Kristen Slahor (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.) at nine (3-6). Regina Oliver (Sr., Pottstown, Pa.) has a team-high 23 ground balls with Brandie Williams (Sr., Hatboro, Pa.) second with 15. Oliver also leads the squad in caused turnover with 13. Williams is second with 11. Ashley Evans leads the team in draw controls with 12. Carter ranks second wit seven. In goal, Kim Hastings is 4-1 on the season, starting all five games. She has a 6.39 goals against average and an .553 saves percentage.
A LOOK AT CORNELL
The head coach for the Big Red is Jenny Graap. Cornell has a 1-2 overall record this season opening with a 11-8 win over Notre Dame. The Big Red fell at Hofstra, 14-7, two weeks ago and lost at Stanford, 8-4 last weekend.
CORNELL BY THE NUMBERS
Cornell’s Kristen Smith leads the team in points with seven and in goals with six. Viola Margaux ranks second in points with six and is tied with Katherine Simmons and Lindsey Moore with four goals each. Leading the Big Red in ground balls with nine is Julia Hughey with Smith, Courtney Farrell, Annie Berkery and Maggie Fava tied for second with seven each. Simmons leads the team in draw controls with five while Hughey has a team-high four caused turnovers. In goal, Fava has started all three games in goal and has a 1-2 record. She has a 10.16 goals against average and a .444 saves percentage.
OHIO STATE – CORNELL SERIES
Ohio State has a 2-1 lead in the series with Cornell. The Big Red won the first meeting, 10-8, in 1999 in a game played in Baltimore, Md. Ohio State won 11-10 in overtime at Cornell in 2003. Last season in a match played at Vanderbilt, the Buckeyes won, 14-11.
THE LAST GAME AGAINST CORNELL
In 2004, Ohio State, behind six goals by Caroline Weatherill, defeated Cornell, 14-11, in a game played at Vanderbilt. Weatherill scored three straight goals to break a 3-3 tie to put OSU ahead for good. Cornell opened the second half the three goals to cut the lead to 10-8 but Weatherill’s fifth and sixth goals go the lead back to three at 12-9. Amy Tulk, Regina Oliver and Ashley Evans added two goals each for the Buckeyes. Jaime Quinn scored three goals for Cornell with Lindsay Steinberg and Kristen Smith adding two each. In goal, Maggie Fava took the loss for the Big Red while making seven saves. OSU’s Kim Hastings played 51 minutes for the win and had 14 saves while giving up 8 goals. Taryn Bowen finished the game (nine minutes) for the Buckeyes, giving up the final three goals.
A LOOK AT NORTH CAROLINA
The head coach for the fourth-ranked Tar Heels is Jenny Slingluff Levy. North Carolina is 6-2 on the season. Last week the Tar Heels defeated New Hampshire, 12-5 and lost to Virginia, 11-5, in home matches.
NORTH CAROLINA BY THE NUMBERS
Prior to the Virginia game, North Carolina’s top scorer was Allison Higgins with 19 points. Christina Juras was second with 14. Higgins, Juras and Jess Allen share team-high honors with nine goals each. Higgins has a team-high 10 assists. Leading the team in ground balls was Gina Allen with 23 while Ilsa Leon had a team-high 13 caused turnovers. In goal, Kristen Hordy has a 6.32 goals against average and a .653 saves percentage.
OHIO STATE – NORTH CAROLINA SERIES
North Carolina leads the series with Ohio State, 6-1. The Tar Heels have won all three neutral site games. The teams played in Baltimore, Md. in 1999 with North Carolina winning 19-5. In 2001, the Tar Heels won 18-6 with the game being played at Penn State. In 2002, at Maryland, North Carolina won 12-7. Losses at North Carolina came in 2000 (9-7) and 2004 (18-6). Ohio State’s 10-8 victory came in 2003.
THE LAST GAME AGAINST NORTH CAROLINA
In 2004, Ohio State lost a 16-8 decision to No. 14 North Carolina in the first day of play at the Aeropostale Women’s Lacrosse Challenge, hosted by North Carolina. OSU’s Noemi Hites scored a team-high three goals for the Buckeyes with Kelyn Laws adding two. Melissa McCarthy had four goals and one assist for North Carolina with Brooke Dieringer adding three goals and an assist for the Tar Heels while Beth Ames and Allison Higgins had three goals each. The Heels held an 8-4 lead at the end of the first half and exploded for six straight goals in the second half to seal the victory. OSU’s Kim Hastings played most of the first half in goal, giving up eight goals. Taryn Bowen finished out the first half and the rest of the game with seven saves while giving up eight goals. Tar Heel Kristen Hordy played the first half for North Carolina making four saves and giving up four goals. Katelyn Hoffman played the second half and had four saves and gave up four goal
A LOOK AT MARYLAND
The head coach for the ninth-ranked Terrapins is Cindy Timchal. Maryland has a 5-3 overall record and won two of three games last week. The Terrapins defeated Denver, 15-3, at home and then won 10-9 in five overtimes at George Mason. Maryland lost at Dartmouth, 10-8, last Saturday.
MARYLAND BY THE NUMBERS
Prior to the Dartmouth game, Acacia Walker had a team-high 21 points for Maryland. She had a team-high 17 goals and four assists. Jessica Dorney (13-6) and Brooke Richards (11-8) were tied for second in points with 19. Annie Collins had a team-high nine assists for the Terrapins. Kirah Miles leads the team with 21 ground balls while Walker has team-highs of 16 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers. In goal, Miles has a 7.47 goals against average and a .529 saves percentage.
OHIO STATE – MARYLAND SERIES
Maryland leads the series with Ohio State, 3-1. The Terrapins have won both neutral site games. Maryland won 19-2 at Penn State in 2001 and 14-4 in 2004 at North Carolina. The Terrapins won 10-5, at home, in 2003. Ohio State defeated the Terrapins in 2002 in a game played at Maryland.
THE LAST GAME AGAINST MARYLAND
In 2004, Ohio State lost, 14-4, to No. 8 Maryland in Chapel Hill, N.C. at the Aeropostale Women’s Lacrosse Challenge. The Buckeye goals were scored by Ashley Evans, Kelyn Laws, Andrea Fischer and KC Carter. Kelly Coppedge had five goals for Maryland with Delia Cox adding three and Jessica Dorney, two. Maryland built up a 6-1 lead in the first half with OSU’s Evans scoring with 1:05 left in the half. The Buckeyes were out scored 8-3 in the second half with Buckeye goals coming from Laws, Fischer and Carter. In goal for Ohio State, Kim Hastings played the first half making eight saves while giving up six goals in the loss. Taryn Bowen was in goal for the second half making two saves while giving up eight goals. Maryland’s Kirah Miles took the win while making six saves.
REVIEWING THE OHIO GAME
Ohio State broke a eight-all tie with 5:58 left in the game with a Regina Oliver free position goal to secure a 9-8 victory over the Bobcats. She also contributed six ground balls and three caused turnovers in the contest including stopping one Ohio possession in the final minutes with a caused turnover. Leading Ohio State in scoring was Kelly Kremer with three goals and an assist. KC Carter contributed two goals and an assist. Dana Dobbie scored a team-high three goals for Ohio. In goal for the Buckeyes, Kim Hastings had five saves in the game for the victory while Jayme Levy had seven saves in the loss.
OHIO STATE RETURNS TO IWLCA RANKINGS
With Ohio State’s victory over sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins and then Virginia Tech, the Buckeyes have returned to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Poll at 15. OSU had 77 votes in the poll this week. The Buckeyes have not been ranked since March 22, 2004 when they were 18th in the poll. Ohio State also was ranked for the first time this season in the insidelacrosse.com poll at 15th and the womenslacrosse.com poll at 17th.
KREMER, OSU’S TOP SCORER AGAINST OHIO
Kelly Kremer had three goals and an assist against Ohio last week to lead OSU in goals and points. She leads the Buckeyes in goals with 19 and points with 22. Kremer has scored three or more goals in each game this season with a high of six against Johns Hopkins.
OLIVER’S LONE GOAL IS THE WINNER AGAINST OHIO
Regina Oliver scored Ohio State’s winning goal on a free position shot at 54:02 against Ohio last week in the 9-8 victory over the Bobcats. Oliver also contributed six ground balls and three caused turnovers in the game. She is Ohio State’s team leader in ground balls with 23 and caused turnovers with 13.
CARTER HAS TWO GOALS AND AN ASSIST AGAINST THE BOBCATS
KC Carter scored two goals and an assist in the victory over Ohio. She added two ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnovers against the Bobcats. Carter is second on the squad in goals with 10 and points with 12. She has scored two or more goals in her last three games.
HASTINGS PICKS UP FOURTH WIN OF THE SEASON
Kim Hastings gave up eight goals while recording five saves in the victory over Ohio. The win gives her a 4-1 record in her five starts this season. Hastings, on the season, has a 6.69 goals against average and a .553 saves percentage.
EVANS LEADS THE SQUAD IN DRAW CONTROLS
Ashley Evans has a team-high 12 draw controls to lead the Buckeyes. She picked up one against Ohio adding two ground balls and a caused turnover in the contest. On the season, Evans has seven ground balls and six caused turnovers.
OLIVER NOW FOURTH IN OSU CAREER POINTS
With her game-winning goal against Ohio, Regina Oliver has moved into fourth in OSU career points with 139 (101 goals, 38 assists). She moved out of a tie with Celeste Cianfrani (1998-00) with 100 points (87 goals, 51 assists). Oliver needs 16 points to pass No. 3 Shannon Wilson (2000-03) with 154 points (110-44).

Regina Oliver has been named to the 2005 Preseason All-Conference Team of the American Lacrosse Conference by a vote of the league’s head coaches. She is a three-time first team ALC all-conference selection and was the 2002 ALC Rookie of the Year and the 2003 ALC Player of the Year. BUCKEYES PICKED TO FINISH SIXTH IN CONFERENCE PLAY
Ohio State has been picked to finish sixth in the ALC. The Buckeyes were 1-5 last season in the ALC, finishing sixth. Northwestern was picked to finish first by the coaches. OLIVER NAMED TO PRESEASON TEWAARATON AWARD WATCHLIST
Regina Oliver has been named to the Spring 2005 preseason watchlist of the Tewaaraton Award Foundation. The award, considered the Heisman Award of lacrosse, will be voted upon by coaches and narrowed as the season progresses, ultimately reaching a final list of five women and five men who will constitute the award’s finalist. Oliver, a midfielder for the Buckeyes, is a two-time Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association/U.S. Lacrosse All-American receiving second team honors in 2003 and a third team selection in 2004. She is a three-time American Lacrosse Conference first team selection and was named the 2002 ALC Rookie of the Year and the 2003 ALC Player of the Year.

Kelly Kremer was honored by both insidelacrosse.com and womenslacrosse.com after her four-goal performance against Duquesne last Saturday. InsideLacrosse.com named her an honorable mention player of the week while womenslacrosse.com named her to their honor roll. Playing in her first game as a Buckeye, Kremer scored four goals in six shots including one for two in free position attempts. She added three draw controls and two ground balls in the contest.

Kim Hastings (Jr., Sewickley, Pa.) was named the Division I National Player of the Week by womenslacrosse.com and the American Lacrosse Conference Player of theWeek for her play against Johns Hopkins and Virginia Tech last week. She recorded 14 saves against Johns Hopkins, adding five ground balls in the contest. From a six-all tied at halftime, she allowed only three second half goals to help secure the win for Ohio State. In the Virginia Tech contest, Hastings contributed 10 saves, a ground ball and a key caused turnover. For the two games, she had an 8.00 goals against average and a .600 saves percentage. On the season, Hastings has a 6.36 goals against average and a .587 saves percentage.
KREMER NAMED NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK BY INSIDELACROSSE.COM – March 14, 2005
Kelly Kremer (Fr., Kennett Square, Pa.) has been named the Division I National Player of the Week by insidelacrose.com for her play last week against Johns Hopkins and Virginia Tech. She recorded a career-high six goals in the upset of Johns Hopkins. She added an assist, two ground balls and a draw control against the Blue Jays. Kremer had three goals in the first half to keep the Buckeyes in the game going into the second half tied at six. She scored OSU’s first two goals of the second half to give the Buckeyes an 8-7 lead. Her sixth goal of the game came during a 4-0 Ohio State scoring run to cap the victory. Against Virginia Tech, Kremer scored a game-high three goals and had an assist. She added a ground ball and a caused turnover. She scored OSU’s last two goals of the first half against the Hokies to give the Buckeyes a 5-4 halftime lead that would hold up for the game. Kremer added a third goal late in the game to complete the hat trick. For the season, Kremer is Ohio State’s leader in goals with 16.
JESSE OWENS MEMORIAL STADIUM, HOME OF THE BUCKEYES
The 8,000-seat Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium arguably is one of the finest multi-sport facilities in the country, hosting track and field and lacrosse in the spring and soccer in the fall. Over the last three years, the Buckeyes are 16-7 (.696) at the facility.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her 10th season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 76-62 at Ohio State and is 152-80 in her 16-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
BUCKEYES HAVE TWO APPEARANCES ON CSTV THIS SEASON
Ohio State will have its final two regular season games telecast by College Sports Television (CSTV) this season. OSU’s game at Northwestern Thursday, April 5 (4 p.m. start) will be a delayed telecast that will be seen at 8 p.m. that night. The Buckeyes will face Notre Dame Saturday, April 7 in a live telecast at 1 p.m.
