Women’s Lacrosse Travels to face Pennsylvania Saturday in Philadelphia – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (1-0) women’s lacrosse squad takes to the road this weekend to face the Quakers of Pennsylvania (0-0) at 1 p.m., Saturday March 5 at Franklin Field.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The head coach for the Buckeyes is Sue Stimmel. Ohio State is 1-0 on the season after a 14-2 victory over Duquesne last Saturday on the North Turf Field of the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex.
OHIO STATE BY THE NUMBERS
Ohio State’s Kelly Kremer (Fr., Kennett Square, Pa.) has a team-high four points for the Buckeyes with four goals. Brandie Williams (Sr., Hatboro, Pa.) and KC Carter (Jr., Birchrunville, Pa.) have three points each with two goals and an assist. Ashley Evans (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) and Natale Miller (So., Birmingham, Pa.) have two points each from two goals. Lindsay Weiner (So., Eldersburg, Md.) has a team-high four ground balls with Williams and Kathryn Kozlakowski (Sr., Towson, Md.) with three each. Carter, Oliver and Williams share team-high honors in caused turnovers with two each. Kremer and Carter each have three draw controls to lead the team with Oliver, Evans and Miller having two each. In goal, Kim Hastings (Jr., Sewickley, Pa.) is 1-0 on the season. She has a 2.16 goals against average and an .800 saves percentage.
A LOOK AT PENNSYLVANIA
The head coach for the Quakers is Karin Brower. Pennsylvania had a 9-7 overall mark last season and went 4-3 in the Ivy League for their first winning Ancient Eight season since 1988. The game with Ohio State is the season opener for the Quakers.
PENNSYLVANIA BY THE NUMBERS
The Quakers return seven of the top eight scorers from the 2004 season. Chrissy Muller had 37 points last season with 24 goals and 13 assists. Katie Spofford (24-3) and Ali Ryan (19-8) had 27 points each. Karen Jann posted a team-high 30 ground balls last season with Muller having 29. In draw controls, Spofford had a team-high 27 with Muller adding 20. Kate Parker posted a team-high 18 caused turnovers in 2004 with Jann having 17. In goal last season, Liz Lorelli started all 16 games, posting a 9-7 record. She had a .506 saves percentage and an 8.20 goals against average.
OHIO STATE – PENNSYLVANIA SERIES
Pennsylvania won the only meeting with the Buckeyes in 1998. The 9-6 Quaker win was played in Philadelphia.

Kelly Kremer was honored by both InsideLacrosse.com and WomensLacrosse.com after her four-goal performance against Duquesne last Saturday. InsideLacrosse.com named her an honorable mention player of the week while WomensLacrosse.com named her to their honor roll. Playing in her first game as a Buckeye, Kremer scored four goals in six shots including one for two in free position attempts. She added three draw controls and two ground balls in the contest.
OLIVER NOW TIED FOR FIFTH IN OSU CAREER POINTS
With her goal against Duquesne, Regina Oliver now has 133 career points and has moved into a tie for fifth on the OSU career list with Mara Simpson (1996-99). Oliver has 97 goals and 36 assists while Simpson has 84 goals and 49 assists. Oliver needs six points to pass No. 4 Celeste Cianfrani (1998-00) with 138 points (87-51).
CARTER NOW TIED FOR FOURTH IN OSU CAREER DRAW CONTROLS
KC Carter recorded three draw controls against Duquesne and now has 53 in her career. That total moves her from seventh to a tie for fourth in OSU career draw controls with Shannon Wilson (2000-03). She passed Caroline Weatherill (2001-04) and Alexia Vogler (2000-03) who were tied for fifth with 51. Carter needs 12 draw controls to pass No. 3 Megan Mirick (1992-02) who has 64.
HASTINGS MOVES TO FIFTH IN CAREER SAVES
With eight saves against Duquesne, Kim Hastings now has 105 career saves and has moved to fifth on the OSU career list. She passed Sheila Rupp (1996) who had 101. Hastings needs 55 saves to pass No. 4 Jamie Bauer (197-99) who has 159.
THREE FRESHMEN IN STARTING LINEUP AGAINST DUQUESNE
Ohio State’s starting lineup against Duquesne had three freshmen starting in their first game for the Buckeyes. Kristen Hannon (Fr., Sykesville, Md.), Kristen Slahor (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.) and Kelly Kremer were starters against the Dukes. Freshmen Molly Gilbert (Fr., Baltimore, Md.) and Jessica Patane (Fr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) also saw action against Duquesne. Sophomore Allyson Vernon (Voorhees, N.J.) saw her first action of her career after being a redshirt last season.
OLIVER BUILDS HER CAREER STATS
With a goal, two ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers, Regina Oliver continues to build on her career totals. She is the OSU career leader in ground balls (168) and caused turnovers (152) and ranks second in draw controls (96). Oliver ranks fourth in goals (97) and seventh in assists (36) and is tied for fifth in career points (133).

Ohio State’s Regina Oliver has been named a first team preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse as announced on their web site.
OLIVER NAMED TO AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
Regina Oliver has been named to the 2005 Preseason All-Conference Team of the American Lacrosse Conference by a vote of the league’s head coaches. She is a three-time first team ALC all-conference selection and was the 2002 ALC Rookie of the Year and the 2003 ALC Player of the Year. BUCKEYES PICKED TO FINISH SIXTH IN CONFERENCE PLAY
Ohio State has been picked to finish sixth in the ALC. The Buckeyes were 1-5 last season in the ALC, finishing sixth. Northwestern was picked to finish first by the coaches. The projected order of finish follows (first place votes): 1. Northwestern 47 (5); 2. Johns Hopkins 42 (2); 3. Penn State 31; Vanderbilt 31; 5. Ohio 19; 6. Ohio State 18; 7. Davidson 8.
OLIVER NAMED TO PRESEASON TEWAARATON AWARD WATCHLIST
Regina Oliver has been named to the Spring 2005 preseason watchlist of the Tewaaraton Award Foundation. The award, considered the Heisman Award of lacrosse, will be voted upon by coaches and narrowed as the season progresses, ultimately reaching a final list of five women and five men who will constitute the award’s finalist. Oliver, a midfielder for the Buckeyes, is a two-time Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association/U.S. Lacrosse All-American receiving second team honors in 2003 and a third team selection in 2004. She is a three-time American Lacrosse Conference first team selection and was named the 2002 ALC Rookie of the Year and the 2003 ALC Player of the Year.
JESSE OWENS MEMORIAL STADIUM, HOME OF THE BUCKEYES
The 8,000-seat Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium arguably is one of the finest multi-sport facilities in the country, hosting track and field and lacrosse in the spring and soccer in the fall. Over the last three years, the Buckeyes are 14-7 (.667) at the facility.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her 10th season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 74-61 at Ohio State and is 150-79 in her 16-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
BUCKEYES HAVE TWO APPEARANCES ON CSTV THIS SEASON
Ohio State will have its final two regular season games telecast by College Sports Television (CSTV) this season. OSU’s game at Northwestern Thursday, April 5 (4 p.m. start) will be a delayed telecast that will be seen at 8 p.m. that night. The Buckeyes will face Notre Dame Saturday, April 7 in a live telecast at 1 p.m.
UP NEXT FOR OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes return home next week to begin American Lacrosse Conference play by hosting Johns Hopkins at 6 p.m., Friday March 11. OSU then faces Virginia Tech Sunday, March 13 at 1 p.m.
