Women’s Volleyball Falls to Ohio, 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (22-9 overall) women’s volleyball team ended their season with a 3-0 (30-27, 30-23, 30-22) defeat at the hands of Ohio (33-2) Saturday night in St. John Arena in a second round match of the NCAA Championship. The Bobcats now advance to the Palo Alto Regional (hosted by Stanford) semifinals Dec. 9. Ohio State’s Danielle Meyer (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a team-high 16 points in the match with a match-high 15 kills (.294) and an ace serve. Bobcat Julia Winkfield produced a match-high 16.5 points for Ohio with 13 kills (.481), two ace serves and three assist blocks.
Game one saw 13 ties and three lead changes. Tied at 23, an OSU error, a Savanah Parra kill and a Winkfield ace serve gave the Bobcats a 26-23 lead. A kill from Amanda Miller (Sr., Littleton, Colo.) made it 26-24. A Buckeye error and a solo block by Melissa Griffin gave Ohio a 28-24 lead. Two Bobcat errors and an Ami Stevens (So., Centerburg, Ohio)-Nicole Britenriker (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) block cut the lead to one at 28-27. The Bobcats, with a block by Griffin and Amanda Andersen and a Griffin kill won the game, 30-27. The Bobcats hit .350 for the game to .227 for Ohio State.
Tied at one in game two, the Bobcats scored the next five points to open a 6-1 lead. Ohio would lead by as many as eight and won the game with a Holly Schetzsle kill at 30-23. The Bobcats hit .116 in the game to -.091 for the Buckeyes.
Two Ohio State errors gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead to start game three. The Buckeyes held a 7-6 lead from a Meyer kill before Bobcats kills from Schetzsle, Winkfield and Molly Mangan put Ohio ahead, 9-7. A Buckeye kill from Marisa Main (Jr., Louisville, Ky.), two from Miller and an OSU error tied the game at 10. An OSU error, a Parra ace serve and an Andersen block gave Ohio a 13-10 lead. The Bobcats would hold the lead and win the game and match on a Winkfield kill at 30-22. Ohio hit .455 in the game to .208 for Ohio State.
For the match the Bobcats hit .293 to .132 for Ohio State. Ohio had a 48-43 advantage in kills while each team recorded four ace serves. The Bobcats gave up eight service errors to seven for Ohio State. Defensively, Ohio had a 48-44 edge in digs with OU’s Michaele Blackburn recording a match-high 16 digs. At the net, the Bobcats had an 11 to four advantage in team blocks. Griffin posted a match-high seven blocks with three solos and four assists for the Bobcats. Parra recorded 38 assists for the Bobcats while OSU’s Main recorded 33.
