No. 2 Buckeyes Compete in Scarlet and Gray Intersquad – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s gymnasts will compete in the Scarlet and Gray intersquad competition on Friday in St. John Arena.
The competition is the second of three exhibition events. The final exhibition is at 2 p.m. Jan. 7 at St. John Arena before the 2006 season begins Jan. 16 at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago, Ill.
The men will be split into two teams that will compete in all events. The Top-3 scores from the Scarlet and Gray teams on each apparatus will be counted to determine the team score in each rotation.
Ohio State Mixed Pairs Recap
Buckeyes from both the men’s and women’s gymnastics teams paired up for the annual Mixed Pairs Championship Dec. 4 at St. John’s Arena. Junior Willie Ito (Huntington Beach, Calif./South Coast Gymnastics) and senior Brittany Brown (Wheaton, Md./Good Counsel) won the 2005 title posting a 55.00 combined score.
The duo took the lead in the first rotation. Ito scored a 9.7 on the high bar and Brown contributed a score of 9.5 on the vault. The pair continued to lead the competition in the following two rotations. Brown scored a 9.85 on the both the floor exercise and the uneven bars, while Ito scored an 8.9 on the parallel bars in the second rotation and finished with a 7.2 on the pommel horse.
The pair of senior Kaylin Schlecht (Marion, Ohio/River Valley) and freshman Eddie Hay (Butler, Pa./Butler) took second place with a combined score of 53.65. The pairs of senior Emily Sineway (Norcross, Ga. /Norcross) and sophomore DJ Bucher (Mason, Ohio/Queen City Gymnastics) and freshman Amanda Surine (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) and freshman Jake Bateman (Kingsport, Tenn./Dobyns-Bennett) tied for third with a score of 52.80.
“Overall, I’m really happy with the outcome of today,” Miles Avery, Ohio State men’s gymnastics head coach, said. “Willie Ito is as ready this year as he was last year. I am worried about the problems the judges had today with the new scoring system.”
