No. 19 Women’s Volleyball Upsets No. 14 Purdue, 3-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 19th-ranked Ohio State (18-7 overall, 11-5 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team upset No. 14 Purdue (21-6, 10-6), 3-2 (30-24, 30-24, 24-30, 22-30, 15-11) in West Lafayette Saturday night. Buckeye Danielle Meyer (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a match-high 23.5 points as all six starters for Ohio State reached double-figure points in the match. Meyer had 16 kills, two ace serves and equaled her career-high of nine total blocks with two solos and seven assists. Purdue’s Danita Merlau posted a team-high 20 points for the Boilermakers with 20 kills.
Tied at 15 in game one, blocks by Nicole Britenriker (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Marisa Main (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) and Britenriker and Ami Stevens (So., Centerburg, Ohio) and kills from Meyer and Stevens opened a 19-15 Ohio State lead. Purdue would close to 25-23 before kills from Stevens and Meyer made it 27-23. A Purdue error and a Stevens’ kill set game point at 29-24. A Buckeye error cut the margin to 29-24 before an Ashley Kiel (Jr., Allenton, Wis.) kill ended the game at 30-24. Ohio State hit .457 in the game to .186 for Purdue.
Purdue took an early 10-7 lead in game two. At 15-11, Purdue, kills from Meyer and Brittany Dahms (So., Byron, Ill.), a solo block from Main and a Main-Meyer block tied the game at 15. The Boilermakers responded with a four-point run to take a 19-15 lead. Ohio State, with a Main-Meyer block, two Meyer ace serves and a Purdue error tied the game at 19. OSU continued the run with two kills from Stevens and one from Meyer to take a 22-19 lead. The Boilermakers cut the margin to one at 22-21 with a Buckeye error and a Samantha Mader kill. A Britenriker kill, an ace serve from Main and a Purdue error opened a 25-21 Ohio State lead. At 26-24, the Buckeyes closed out the game with a four-point run starting with a Purdue error. A Britenriker ace serve and a Boilermaker error set game point at 29-24. The Buckeyes won the game with a Kiel-Meyer block at 30-24. Ohio State hit .321 for the game to .000 for Purdue.
In game three, Purdue broke a 1-1 tie with a Merlau kill and never trailed in the game winning, 30-24. The Boilermakers hit .395 in the game to .286 for Ohio State.
Game four saw an Elizabeth Jacques kill break a 1-1 tie for Purdue and again never trailed the rest of the game, winning, 30-22, to tie the match at two games each. Purdue hit .444 in the game to .226 for the Buckeyes.
The fifth game had Purdue break a 7-7 tie with back-to-back kills by Stephanie Lynch to take a 9-7 lead. A Britenriker kill and a Kiel-Britenriker block tied the game at nine. Ohio State took an 11-9 lead with a kill from Kiel and an ace serve by Main. Purdue’s Lynch cut the lead to one at 11-10 with a kill. The Buckeyes, with a kill from Stevens and two from Felicia Jones (Jr., Concord, Ont.) reached match point at 14-10. Merlau stopped the first match point with a kill at 14-11 but her attack error ended the game in favor of Ohio State, 15-11, to win the match, 3-2. Ohio State hit .421 in the game to .316 for Purdue.
Ohio State hit .338 for the match to .268 for Purdue. The Boilermakers had a 75-71 margin in kills and an eight to five edge in ace serves. Purdue gave up 14 service error to 11 for Ohio State. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 51-48 margin in digs with Purdue’s Anne Mastandrea recording a match-high 20. At the net, Ohio State equaled their season-high of 14 team blocks set at Iowa while Purdue recorded three. OSU’s Meyer had a match-high nine total blocks with two solos and sevens assists while Main equaled her career-high of six total blocks with a solo and five assists. Purdue setter Renata Dargan posted a match-high 60 assists while OSU’s Main recorded 57.
Ohio State returns home next week to face Iowa Friday and No. 17 Minnesota Saturday in OSU’s final home regular season matches.
