Ohio State Rowing Celebrates Season at Awards Banquet – Ohio State Buckeyes

The Ohio State rowing team closed the 2003-04 season with its annual awards banquet last Friday. The team honored its nine seniors and presented awards to the members of the 2004 squad for their contribution to the team.
Senior Tatiana Grigorieva (Moscow, Russia/College of Olympic Reserve) earned several awards on the night, including the team’s Most Valuable Rower Award. The Golden Buckeye Award was given to junior Diana Albrecht (Dresden, Germany/Vitztum Gymnasium) for most inspirational team member, while junior Meredith Corley (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) earned Most Improved Rower. Novice Rower of the Year was presented to freshman Jessica Shepherd (Richwood, Ohio/Edison).
The team also recognized its nine seniors. Grigorieva was presented with awards for first team all-conference, all-region and All-America. She also was recognized as an Academic All-Big Ten honoree. Grigorieva was a member of the Buckeyes’ first varsity eight, which earned accolades as the Big Ten Boat of the Week four-consecutive weeks. Coxswain Ashley Orr (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) received first team all-region and second team all-conference. Orr also was a member of the Academic All-Big Ten team and the first varsity boat.
Senior captains Susi Wesenberg (Rostock, Germany/Gymnasium Grosse Stadtschule) and Amanda Spires (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) were both honored for their contributions to the 2004 team. Wesenberg, a member of the Buckeyes’ top boat, earned honors as second team all-region and all-conference. Wesenberg and Spires were both honored as Academic All-Big Ten.
Seniors Becca Brinker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton), Natalie Legge (Sydney, Australia/St. George Rowing Club), Christen Opperman (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and Devin Walsh (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) were also all named Academic All-Big Ten. Tricia Blocher (Uniontown, Ohio/Greenhigh) spent just one season with the varsity squad, but was recognized for her effort and contribution to the team.
