Women’s Lacrosse Hosts No. 3 Notre Dame At Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Saturday – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (4-6, 1-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad will face third-ranked Notre Dame (8-0, 3-0 Big East) at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 10 in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes are coming off a spilt of games last week, losing at Virginia Tech, 10-6, before returning home to defeat Davidson, 17-10, for OSU’s first conference victory of the season.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Sue Stimmel coaches the Buckeyes. Ohio State is 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the American Lacrosse Conference. The Buckeyes lost a third straight game, 10-6 at Virginia Tech Friday before returning home to defeat Davidson, 17-10 last Sunday. Ohio State’s Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) is the team leader in points with 18 (14 goals, 4 assists). Caroline Weatherill (Sr., Malvern, Pa.) ranks second with 15 (12 goals, 3 assists). Amy Tulk (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) ranks third in points with 14 from 12 goals and two assists. Oliver leads the team in ground balls (39) and caused turnovers (32). Ashley Evans (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) is second in ground balls with 28 and Kathryn Kozlakowski (Jr., Towson, Md.) is third with 26. Kelly Cook (Sr., Downingtown, Pa.) is second in caused turnover with 16 and Evans is third with 13. Weatherill leads the team with 15 draw controls with Oliver second with 11. Kim Hastings (So., Sewickley, Pa.) and Taryn Bowen (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) have been splitting time in goal. Hastings has started all 10 matches and has a 4-6 record. She has made 58 saves (.509) and has a 10.01 goals against average. Bowen has made 36 saves (.434) and has an 11.16 goals against average.
A LOOK AT NOTRE DAME
Tracy Coyne coaches the third-ranked Fighting Irish. Notre Dame won 14-8 at Connecticut last Saturday to go 8-0 on the season and 3-0 in the Big East. They will host Ohio University Tuesday. Prior to the Ohio game, Meredith Simon is the team leader in points with 38 with team-highs of 27 goals and 11 assists. Abby Owen ranks second with 21 points from 21 goals and seven assists. Lauren Fischer is third in points with 21 from 15 goals and six assists. Andrea Kinnik has a team-high 24 ground balls for Notre Dame with Simon second with 22. Simon has a team-high 22 draw controls with Kassen Delano second with 20. Owen leads the team with 13 caused turnovers with Kinnik second with 12. In goal for the Fighting Irish is Carol Dixon. She has played the entire season and has collected 74 saves (.532) and has an 8.02 goals against average.
NOTRE DAME-OHIO STATE SERIES HISTORY
Ohio State leads the series with Notre Dame, 5-3. The Buckeyes are 2-1 in matches played in Columbus, winning the last two in 2002 and 2000. The series began at Notre Dame in 1997 with an OSU, 11-7 win. In Columbus, Notre Dame won, 10-9 in 1998. The Buckeyes won, 15-12, in 1999 at Notre Dame. OSU won at home in 2000, 10-9. In 2001, the Fighting Irish won 18-12 at home. Ohio State won the regular season game, 12-11, that was played in Columbus. The Buckeyes then lost, 11-7, at Notre Dame that season in a NCAA Tournament game. Last season, Ohio State won, 12-9, at Notre Dame.

Ohio State scored the first three goals of the game and never trailed in a 12-9 victory over 14th-ranked Notre Dame. Regina Oliver scored a game-high four goals with Caroline Weatherill and Noemi Hites adding two each for OSU. Notre Dame’s Danielle Shearer and Lauren Fischer scored two goals each for the Irish. OSU’s Shannon Wilson opened the scoring just 10 seconds into the game and with goals by Oliver and Tracey Bounds took a 3-0 lead. Notre Dame outscored the Buckeyes, 6-5, giving OSU an 8-6 halftime lead. The Irish closed to within one at 9-8 before Weatherill’s second free position goal gave OSU a 10-8 lead. Late goals by Hites and Alexia Vogler offset a final talley from the Irish to give the Buckeyes a 12-9 victory. In goal, Notre Dame’s Jen White has nine saves in the game as did OSU Erin Forquer who has been in goal for six consecutive wins.
OHIO STATE LOSSES TO VIRGINIA TECH, 10-6
Ohio State fell to Virginia Tech, 10-6 after the Hokies built up an 8-1 first half lead. OSU responded with five consecutive scores in the second half to close to within two at 8-6. Virginia Tech added to goals for the final 10-6 score. OSU’s Ashley Evans scored twice for the Buckeyes with KC Carter, Amy Tulk, Brandie Williams and Natale Miller each adding a goal. For Virginia Tech, Britt Faulkner scored three goals with Kate Threadgold and Lindsey Welch adding two each. Kim Hastings took the loss in goal for OSU, playing the first 30 minutes. Taryn Bowen played the second half. Each gave up seven saves. Hokie Jamie McGraw had 11 saves in the game.
OHIO STATE DEFEATS DAVIDSON, 17-10
Ohio State recorded its first win in conference play with a 17-10 home victory over Davidson. OSU’s Regina Oliver scored three of her four goals in the first 10 minutes of the game to help OSU build a 6-0 lead. OSU held a 9-2 halftime margin and had a 14-4 lead when Davidson scored five straight goals to cut the lead to 15-10. Two OSU goals ended the scoring in a 17-10 Buckeye win. Oliver had a game-high four goals and two assists. OSU’s KC Carter added three goals and Amy Tulk two. Wildcat Eloise Grose had a team-high four points for Davidson with two goals and two assists. In goal, Davidson’s Leslie Smith took the loss and recorded 12 saves. OSU’s Kim Hastings started in goal, playing the first half and recorded two saves. Taryn Bowen started the second half, playing 12 minutes, and gave up two goals. Joy DeMarco saw her first action of the season, playing 18 minutes and recording five saves while giving up six goals.
EVANS SCORING STREAK AT NINE
Coming off two goals at Virginia Tech and one against Davidson, Ashley Evans extended her goal scoring streak to nine games. Her two goals against the Hokies was her second two-game game of the season. She had two against Cornell.
HASTINGS AND BOWEN SHARING THE GOAL
Kim Hastings and Taryn Bowen are sharing the goalie duties for the Buckeyes. Hastings has started all 10 games and has a 4-6 record in playing 335 minutes. Bowen has seen action in all 10 games and has 252 minutes. Hastings has a .509 save percentage (with 58 saves) and has a 10.01 goals against average. Bowen has 36 saves (.434) had has a 11.16 goals against average.
DeMARCO SEES HER FIRST ACTION OF THE SEASON
In the Davidson game, Joy DeMarco (Fr., Hudson, Ohio) saw her first action of her career against the Wildcats. She played the final 17:46 of the game and recorded five saves. DeMarco entered the game with a 14-4 OSU lead and gave up six goals.
OLIVER NOW SIXTH IN CAREER GOALS
With four scores against Davidson, Regina Oliver now has 85 career goals and has moved to sixth on the OSU career list. Oliver passed Erin Andersen (1998-01) with 83 and Mara Simpson (1996-99) with 84 goals. Ahead of her is No. 5 Lauren Cochran (1999-02) with 86 and No. 4 Celeste Cianfrani (1998-01) with 87.
OLIVER MOVES TO SECOND IN CAREER GROUND BALLS
With five ground balls at Virginia Tech and four against Davidson, Regina Oliver now has 151 career ground balls and has moved to second on the OSU career list. She passed Kimberly Lowe (2000-03) with 149. Oliver needs nine ground balls to move past current career leader Shannon Wilson (2000-03) who has 159.
OSU FACES PENN STATE ON CSTV SCHEDULE
CSTV (College Sports Television) selected the Friday, April 23 Ohio State-Penn State game as part of their 20-event lacrosse schedule. The 7 p.m. game will be one of five regular season women’s games to be carried by CSTV. They will also telecast all three NCAA women’s championship games.
OHIO STATE REGULAR SEASON ROAD WIN STREAK STOPPED AT TEN
With a 10-9 overtime win at Stanford, Ohio State extended its regular season road-winning streak to 10 games. The streak ended two days later with a 10-6 loss at California. OSU won all eight regular season road games last season including wins at Penn State and Notre Dame. The streak included a 2002 victory at Ohio.
OHIO STATE, THE DEFENDING AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS
At the end of the 2003 ALC season, Ohio State and Penn State were tied with 5-1 records. Based upon the league bylaws, Ohio State’s 10-9 win at Penn State made the Buckeyes the outright champion of the conference. They bylaw was written to select the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship, which takes effect this season.
BUCKEYES PICKED TO WIN ALC CHAMPIONSHIP
Ohio State, the defending American Lacrosse Conference Champion, has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the league championship by a vote of the conference coaches. OSU received four of the seven first place votes and 46 total points. Penn State was ranked second with two first place votes and 43 points. The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions finished the 2003 conference season with 5-1 records but Ohio State won the championship based upon the bylaws of the conference.
OLIVER AND CARTER NAMED TO ALC PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
By a vote of the conference coaches, Ohio State midfielders Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) and KC Carter (So., Birchrunville, Pa.) have been named to the 12-player 2004 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team. Oliver was further honored as the 2004 Preseason Player of the Year. She was the 2003 ALC Player of the Year and the 2002 Rookie of the Year. Carter was the 2003 Rookie of the Year.
JESSE OWENS MEMORIAL STADIUM, HOME OF THE BUCKEYES
The 8,000-seat Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium arguably is one of the finest multi-sport facilities in the country, hosting track and field and lacrosse in the spring and soccer in the fall. Over the last two years, the Buckeyes are 13-3 (.813) at the facility.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her ninth season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 72-56 (.563) at Ohio State and is 148-74 (.667) in her 15-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
