No. 17 Men’s Lacrosse Beats No. 8 Duke, 16-9 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Buckeye junior Kyle Olson had six points to lead the No. 17 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team to a 16-9 victory over No. 8 Duke Saturday in front of 1,509 fans at North Turf Field. The win, Ohio State’s sixth in a row and the first over Duke in program history, improved the Buckeyes’ record to 7-2 on the year (1-0 GWLL). Duke falls to 4-4 (0-2 ACC).
“It was a terrific win for the program,” Joe Breschi, OSU head coach, said. “But more importantly, it is an amazing win for the team. I am so proud of how they have persevered through this last month. I love them so much; it’s all heart and soul.”
Olson (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) had a game-high six points, with three goals and three assists. Buckeye sophomore Ben Wolff (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall), senior Ryan Laffey (Sr., Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and sophomore Andrew Bender (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) each had three goals in the game for the Buckeyes. In net, senior goalie Tony Russo (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) made a season-high 16 saves.
The Buckeyes owned a 3-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game. Shaun Lyons (Sr., Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville), assisted by Olson, tallied 1:30 into the contest. Anthony Gilardi (Sr., Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) made the score 2-0 at 6:41, followed by a Jason Lutz (Fr., Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) tally less than a minute later (5:48). The Blue Devils responded with goals 12 seconds apart by Matt Zash and Chris Haunss to cut the Buckeyes’ lead to one (3-2), but Laffey and Bender scored at 4:08 and 3:25, respectively, to put the Buckeyes up by three (5-2) at the end of the first quarter. Ohio State and Duke traded goals at 12:06 and 10:35 of the second quarter, by Wolff and Lee Skandalaris, respectively, before OSU went on a four-goal streak. Bender scored at 10:01, followed by back-to-back tallies by Olson (including a man-up score). Gilardi ended the Buckeyes’ scoring in the quarter with a goal at 1:52, followed by a Duke score by Dan Flannery at 1:16. OSU went into the lockerroom at halftime with a 10-4 lead.
Duke cut the Buckeyes’ lead to four (12-8) in the third quarter, as it outscored the Buckeyes, 4-2. Peter Lamade scored on an extra-man opportunity at 8:34 of the quarter, followed by a Matt Danowski score at 6:12. The Buckeyes rattled off back-to-back goals by Laffey and Wolff at 4:06 and 3:49, but Duke ended the quarter with goals at 3:31 and :14 by Lamade and Haunss.
Early in the fourth, Laffey and Skandalaris traded goals to make the score 13-9 OSU, before the Buckeyes scored three times (by Bender, Olson and Wolff) to clinch the win. Russo made seven saves in the period, many at point-blank range, to help seal the victory.
For Duke, Aaron Fenton started the game in net and played 35:54. He made 11 saves and allowed 12 goals. Dan Loftus saw 24:06 of action, making seven saves and giving up four goals. Haunss, Lamade and Skandalaris each had two goals in the game, while Flannery had a team-best three assists and four points.
Each team converted on 1-of-3 man-up chances in the game.
Ohio State Postgame Notes
The win was Ohio State’s first over a current Atlantic Coast Conference team in program history. OSU improved to 1-5 all-time against Duke.
With 16 saves against Duke, Russo moved into second place all-time in OSU history for career saves with 573. He passed Russell Salk (1991-94), who had 567. Russo is 37 saves shy of the all-time mark of 610 set by Jim Hartnett from 1979-81.
The Buckeyes have not allowed more than nine goals in a game this season and are averaging just 6.69 goals against per game.
Buckeye head coach Joe Breschi is three wins shy of tying the Buckeyes’ program record for career coaching wins. Breschi is 54-36 at the helm of the squad. Paul Hartman (1961-66) is the all-time leader with 57 coaching victories.
Gilardi and Wolff both extended their scoring streaks to nine. Each has at least one point in every game this season. Wolff has at least one goal in every game on the year.
Olson’s six points were a career best as a Buckeye, as were his three assists. Bender’s three goals vs. Duke also marked a career high, breaking his previous best of two set against Navy earlier this season. Laffey’s three goals were a season best and tied his career high.
The Buckeyes’ six-game winning streak is their longest since they won six in a row March 16-April 18 last season.
Jason Bloom (So., Coquitlam, British Columbia) had a career-best two assists in the game. He is on a three-game scoring streak.
No. 8 Duke is the second Top 15-ranked team the Buckeyes defeated this week. OSU topped No. 13 Notre Dame on the road Wednesday.
The 1,509 fans in attendance was the highest home total for Ohio State since 1,730 fans came to watch Ohio State face Johns Hopkins April 6, 2002.
The Buckeyes return to action at 7 p.m. Friday, April 9 when they play host to GWLL foe Butler in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
